The speaker discusses the horror-comedy film *Slanted*, directed by Amy Wang. The movie uses a body-horror premise—an Asian girl physically turning white—to satirize beauty standards, self-hatred, and the pressure to assimilate. The speaker connects the film's themes to the director's own immigrant experiences and the broader societal pressures faced by Asian women.
This asian girl literally and physically and biologically just turned herself white
But it came with a price
Have you ever suffered the injustice of being a person of color in this world?
Have you ever had someone tell you how impressed they are? How well you speak english without an accent?
Or are you just tired of the way white folks look at you
If you can't beat them
Them
I have some sad news. I'm not gonna run for prom queen
You think olivia's racist and stupid so help me beat her for prom queen
I have
a whole plan
Vote for me vote for me
I've decided i'm gonna endorse one girl for prom queen someone we all want to be irregardless of prejudice
I can see your black roots
All right. No, this is not a real news story
This is a movie a actual horror comedy
Directed by amy wang featuring shirley chen who i've met briefly who also starred in dd
Which another was another asian directed indie movie really good job
But what do you guys think my first reaction was like hey this kind of has like get out vibes because it's kind of like
body horror
Uh, but it's a little bit comedic
But then get out I will say actually wasn't as comedic as I think this one is this one's definitely a little bit more
Clearly obviously satire and I understand that the movie get out was a totally ridiculous premise
But now given all this transhumanism talk by peter teal and brian johnson pumping his body full of his young son's blood
I don't know. It's actually not that far away from happening
Anyways, I think that this concept by amy wang is really really interesting because it's kind of like something that we've talked about in
The asian american sphere or just about identity in general for almost any minority by the way
But kind of asians in particular about turning white like we all kind of know like there was an asian girl
But less so the asian guy, but it was easier for the asian girl to kind of like bleach their hair
Kind of act a certain way kind of put on makeup
Maybe they happen to have like slightly more rounder eyes for an asian girl and they could almost from afar
seem
Like a blonde girl
but now this movie really delves into that, you know that self hatred and that self shame that they have and you know,
it really probably is
to at the end of it all a a
Love yourself type movie, but you know wrapped up in a very horrific
Scene I decided to talk about this movie because I actually came across one of the clips on instagram now
I don't know if they want this clip to be released, but I saw it on instagram
I'm gonna play it and it's just a part of her meeting her parents as the blonde girl that she wanted to turn into
Who are you? It's me. Sorry. Uh, you have wrong house. Sure wrong house, please dad. It's me. Hey mom
You have a birthmark on your left thigh
Your favorite dessert is the dried taro cake from down the street your favorite cd
Asking me to make dumplings with you last week dad, we were writing a song here a few days ago mom
Grandma took this to me one of us five
We were sitting right there whenever you whenever you slice your hand open and we had to sew it up and you asked me
To take over your cleaning duties. I had surgery to look like
You're not my daughter
When
Are you guys at least like a little bit happy for me? Hey shout out to that blonde actress
I mean, I don't know if she actually learned the chinese or they dubbed it for her
But that wasn't bad in the comments a lot of people compare this to the movie substance which came out before
Now that doesn't mean that amy wang was copying the movie substance
I do think this whole like body shaming kind of concept has been around
There's also this new series out about like this substance that makes people prettier
So definitely this whole thing with the whole looks maxing and social media and everybody's at ig model
It totally is in the zeitgeist. So i'm not surprised that there's uh similar concepts that come out
I don't think she copied her because at the end of the day
She was probably working on this movie a long long time ago. Let me say something about substance
Okay, it features demi more i'm gonna play a quick clip
One single injection
Unlocks your dna and will release another version of yourself
this is
the substance bro
Let me just be honest when I was like five years old and I saw a movie trailer for the movie striptease
Featuring demi more I straight I turned I entered boyhood. All right, i'm serious
Shout out to demi. I might have to watch substance just for the nostalgia factor
Anyways in a interview with the director amy wang on joy sauce.com. She did say this thing that I thought was interesting
She's from australia original. She's a chinese australian. She goes
This entire film is really kind of an autobiography on my life
And what I went through as a teenager and thoughts of emotions. I felt as a 16 year old and 17 year old girl
That's where it all started. I grew up in sydney australia. I was an immigrant
I couldn't speak a word of english when I moved to australia when I was seven and I really had to assimilate and integrate
Myself into the culture. I definitely felt othered and throughout my life
So the concept is grounded in that experience and my own personal experience of being asian australian
So what I want to say is that this is something very relatable that a lot of people go through and particularly
asian women because also one women beauty standards are on a whole nother level than men and I think we can all agree and
there's a lot of factors to the reason why but
It's a fact and then also being asian girls
Often asian women have an easier time at least
Going in and out of being fluid of being seen as non-asian. Like I always say that's a joke. This is a joke
It's like if you got like a white frat party, right?
And then you see like two asian girls enter every dudes are like, oh, yeah, dude more chicks, bro. Hell
Yeah, and then if you see two asian dudes enter they're like why are there so many asian dudes here?
Well all who brought all the asians, you know
and and it just kind of goes to show you that like I think a lot of men and
This relates to a lot of what we talk about on this channel that asian women are often caught
Really in between of like yo, what do I want to be and it's not just being blonde and you know
It could be on the other side. It could be just relating to other races as well
But you know, we all know that this is a thing that's happened. And so i'm really glad
That amy wang
Made this movie and she's really like wants to spark this conversation about shame and beauty standards
And it's not just and it's crazy because listen, let's be honest. Asian women got different beauty standards
They can either they they got the got the asia beauty standards
Like, you know the kind of k-pop idol j-pop idol move standards of being stick skinny and being like egg yo
You know and then they also got the ones where oh they now in america. They feel pressure to to be blonde
so, you know, I think there's a lot of uh body there's there's a lot of body issues basically and and I just think like
You know, it's an interesting movie and yeah, you guys should watch it and I want to watch it
Uh, even though like yeah parts of it like looked goofy in the clip, but that's because it is literally satire
So it's not like trying to be like horror horror serious thriller all throughout is absolutely satire
And I think that was a way to do it. So anyways guys
slanted
also
reminds me
Of this get out parody that me and david did uh many many years ago i'll play the clip. Oh
Where's the
Yep, where who are you? What are you doing? Get away from me with that thing, man
Great what am I supposed to do with this?
Hey, jeremy. Yeah, it's dad. I got a question for you. Where'd you nab this guy?
I asked for a top player from the league
Oh, yeah, he is from a league, huh? Which league would that be the badminton league?
the six foot and under league
the league of legends
Jeremy i'm gonna be honest with you. Dad's a little p.o right now
We're gonna talk about this later with mom. Okay
All right. I'll talk to you later. Bye
Are you gonna take my kidneys and sell them on the black market or something?
No, no, no, no, no. No, what kind of low-class operation do you think this is?
Oh
I know what you're gonna do. You're gonna take that old rich white guy's brain and stick it into my younger fit
exotic body, huh?
No, no, no, there's gonna be no body switching today. I think my customer over there would be a little bit upset about that
Oh
wait
Why not? What do you mean? You know, it's just like maybe it's not uh, you know, is it because i'm an asian guy?
You know what? I don't want to have this conversation. Oh, okay. I get it. You don't think asian guys are cool enough to body snatch
Well, i'll tell you this asians we're coming up we're super hot right now
Not super hot, but we're warming up
We got a lot of cool things going for us and guess what?
We're doing a lot of things that people didn't expect us to do. Yeah, i'm right there with you, buddy
You guys are doing good stuff
I mean i've never come across a spicy tuna roll that I didn't like and my portfolio is heavily weighted in china
and southeast asia and let me tell you before I met my wife, I did have a heavy asian phase but uh
Listen, here's the deal this old guy over here. He's an old buick
He just wants to slip into something more exciting and sporty like a mustang
imagine if he paid all that money and the next day he woke up in a
Camry what's wrong with camrys? Those are great cars to watch the rest of that parody click on the link down below
But anyways, let me know what you guys think about this movie slanted
It's a real movie it got written it got produced it touches on some real things
It is supposed to be a horror body horror comedy
Satire. All right, so slanted till next time guys
I'm out. Peace
