While over 120 passengers are under care and 41 Americans are being monitored, the WHO maintains that the global risk remains low. Most passengers are currently quarantined and testing in specialized facilities or at home.
World Health Organization says its control measures to contain the Hanta
virus are working. The agency's operation to transfer all passengers on
board the cruise ship is now complete. It comes as at least 41 americans are
being monitored for the virus here in the United States. A. B. C. S. Perry
Russum has the latest. The World Health Organization says the delicate
operation to transfer all passengers on board the Hanta virus stricken cruise
ship has been successfully completed. More than 120 passengers are now being
cared for because of the long incubation period of up to six weeks.
More cases may be reported in coming days as passengers return to their
countries where they are being quarantined and tested in specialized
facilities or at home. In a news conference this morning, the W. H. O.
says the risk to the global population remains low. It comes as at least 41
americans in a dozen states coast to coast are being monitored for Hanta
virus. The CDC says 16 of them were not on the cruise where this outbreak
started. They may have been exposed during travel on flights in Kansas.
Three people have been transferred to the hospital for observation. Officials
say they had high risk exposure to an infected person who was not on the ship
while abroad. Dr Steven Kornfeld, the acting doctor on the cruise ship, is
the only american known to test positive from the ship. The medical
director of the Nebraska biocontainment unit tells ABC News she
does not believe Kornfeld ever had the virus. That's what I suspect was that
initial test was false positive. Kornfeld's most recent test came back
negative emotionally. I felt wonderful. It's nice to be negative for Hanta
virus. He's been moved to a quarantine unit where he's now debating whether
to stay in Nebraska and quarantine for the recommended 42 days or finish his
time from his home in Bend, Oregon. I think everybody in this unit is sort of
having that discussion with their own health system and with their family.
Some will probably stay here the entire time. Some may ultimately go home.
Kornfeld says if he did go home, he would not fly commercial. The W. H. O.
says the captain of the ship and the crew is still on board. Nobody is
showing symptoms. The ship is expected to dock in the Netherlands on monday in
