Jan Matejko (1838–1893) was Poland’s most celebrated 19th-century historical painter and a key figure in shaping national identity during the partitions of Poland. Known for his massive, detailed canvases depicting defining moments in Polish history—such as The Battle of Grunwald and Stańczyk—he was a patriot who used art to "uplift the hearts and minds" of his countrymen. He was also the long-serving director of the Kraków School of Fine Arts.

Jan Matejko's Summer House (Dworek Jana Matejki) in Nowa Huta
Location: Situated in Krzesławice (now part of the Nowa Huta district of Kraków), the manor house is on Melchiora Wańkowicza Street.
History & Purchase: Matejko bought this small 1826-built country manor in 1876, using funds from the sale of his painting Stefan Batory at Psków.
Usage: It served as a summer residence and retreat for his family, a peaceful escape from the city, and a place where he worked on paintings, including Kościuszko at Racławice.
Features: Matejko designed a signature wooden porch with an openwork balustrade, which survives to this day. The manor is surrounded by a 4-hectare park.
Today, the house serves as a museum dedicated to Matejko and his friend Hugo Kołłąta, managed by the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Kraków. It displays personal memorabilia, family photographs, and some paintings.
