Mothers, victims raise awareness about AI deepfakes

Well, it's become a disturbing trend in schools across the country and here at home. Deepfakes generated through AI. In many cases, it's led to cyberbullying and worse. Tonight, Pennsylvania state officials met with parents and students on how to deal with this growing threat. Action News reporter Brianna Smith is at Radnor High School, which has dealt with its own deepfake incident. The mothers of victims organized this event to raise awareness about the AI deepfake abuse Teenage victims also shared how their horrific experience changed their lives forever. We found out and were frozen in a moment of time. Audrey Greenberg says her daughter is a victim of AI deepfakes following an incident at Radnor High School in December. It's an acute event that creates trauma immediately. Now Greenberg is on a mission to educate parents worldwide to protect children. It's all of you right now in this audience that are going to help us make a difference with voting and talking to your friends. A panel of experts, Pennsylvania state representatives and Attorney General Dave Sunday spoke to a room full of parents Thursday night. We are prosecuting these cases. We have investigations all throughout Pennsylvania and we're going to continue to do so. State lawmakers criminalized deepfakes, but now they're trying to pass legislation requiring mandated reporters to immediately report sexually explicit deepfakes of minors to law enforcement. Experts also revealed a multi-pronged approach to combat this issue that involves parents. We need to be doing our part to monitor what they're downloading. Advocacy groups. We're focused on putting pressure on tech companies to make right decisions on behalf of children while we wait for the correct laws to be put in place. And school leaders. The Radnor Township School District said in a statement, quote, we have revisited and strengthened our district policies, provided more education, training, and support for our students, plan to provide resources and training for parents, and continue to lean on third party experts. We need to do better. We need to have requirements for schools and police that they respond in a way that protects the victims. And the AG says it's crucial to call the police if you're a victim of this crime. These mothers plan to continue these educational sessions throughout the state.
