SpaceX's Starship Deluge Farm EXPLODED during Pad 2 Test...Flight 12 in Major Problem!
Not long after SpaceX dropped the official launch date for Starship Flight 12, BOOM! A massive explosion tore through Launch Pad 2, hurling a huge, charred black chunk of metal high into the air while the team was furiously pushing the pad through intense, high-stakes testing. In one devastating moment, everything was ruined. What the hell just happened?
Will this push back the flight? Or is it worse than we fear? Let’s dive in and find out right now.
According to the official FAA documentation for Starship Flight 12, liftoff is now less than a week away. That means SpaceX has been running Pad 2 at Starbase flat-out, pushing it through an intense series of tests to get Booster 19 ready for its next static fire. They’re going way beyond the usual checks like booster quick disconnects, ship quick disconnects, or chopstick operations. This time, they’re leveling up the entire ground system—especially the deluge water system. On May 3rd, they ran a full-power test that fired up both the flame deflector and the top-deck water-cooled pancake at the same time.

Water exploded out of the Orbital Launch Mount like Niagara Falls on steroids. Massive white columns shot skyward, blanketing the pad in thick mist while the roar of rushing water echoed everywhere. It gave you a real sense of the insane forces those 33 Raptor 3 engines are about to unleash. But right when everything looked perfect, Starbase Live cameras caught something wild. Out of the thick steam, a large black metal plate suddenly rocketed upward, trailing smoke and dust. At first, everyone thought a critical piece of the pad had just been destroyed. After close analysis by trackers and experts reviewing the footage and photos, it turned out to be just the roof cover protecting one of the Gas Generators.

Here’s why that matters. SpaceX has completely redesigned the deluge system for Pad 2. In the past, they relied on banks of high-pressure nitrogen tanks—open the valves and the pressurized gas would shove the water out. The new system ditches those tanks entirely and uses methalox gas generators instead—basically miniature rocket engine cores. They’ve got three of them: a big one for the flame deflector, a smaller one for the top-deck pancake, and a medium-sized unit for the launch mount itself. One of these gas generators experienced an anomaly during the full-power run.The gas generator is the beating heart of the whole deluge system. It burns methane and liquid oxygen in a combustion chamber to spin a turbopump at insane speed, generating massive nitrogen pressure. That pressure then blasts water across the pad at ten times the flow rate of the old system, turning the entire launch area into a giant cooling spray that kills heat and dampens the brutal acoustic shock.Without it, those 33 Raptor 3s would easily torch the pad and shake the tower to dangerous levels. Pad 2 is built for the high-cadence future of Block 3 vehicles, so its deluge system has to be significantly more powerful than Pad 1’s—which is exactly why they tested it at full load. The incident was likely a turbopump or gas generator over-pressurization during the maximum-power test, blowing the protective cover off. SpaceX hasn’t released an official statement yet, but this lines up with what we’ve seen: the two previous static fires on Booster 19 were both scrubbed due to pressure sensor drops in the deluge manifold. Clearly, they’re in the final tuning phase.
