This walk captures that quiet moment early in the season, birds becoming more active, new growth starting to show and the gentle shift from winter into spring. The lanes, fields and stone cottages sit quietly in the morning light, with just the natural sounds of the countryside.
There’s no talking or music, just birdsong, light movement in the landscape and the calm atmosphere of an early spring morning.
ABOUT LOWER DOWDESWELL
Lower Dowdeswell is a small village in Gloucestershire, set within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Cheltenham. The village lies in the Dowdeswell Valley, surrounded by open fields and gently rolling countryside.
The name “Dowdeswell” is thought to come from Old English, meaning a spring or stream belonging to a person named Dudda, reflecting the natural water features in the area. The village has medieval origins and developed as a farming community, shaped by agriculture and sheep grazing that supported the Cotswolds’ historic wool trade.
At the centre of the village stands the church of St Michael and All Angels, with parts dating back to the Norman period. The surrounding cottages and buildings are made from traditional Cotswold stone and reflect centuries of rural life.
In early spring, the area begins to change, hedgerows start to fill out, birds return, and the countryside slowly shifts into a new season while still holding onto its quiet character.
