In this Drop Box Build update, Dude RV pushes through three days of interrupted work to make major progress on the off-grid kayak adventure rig.
Even with the setbacks, this episode moves the build forward in a big way.
The biggest addition in this update is a winch mounted to the trailer, designed to make loading and pulling the Drop Box smooth, controlled, and way easier.
We also hit a major milestone: ✅ the trailer framing is now complete
This gives the build its real shape and starts bringing the overall Drop Box RV vision to life.
🔧 What’s Covered in This Update ⚙️ three days of real-world build interruptions 🪝 winch installation for pulling the box 🪚 framing completion 🚐 progress on the Drop Box trailer platform 🛶 moving closer to the kayak adventure mission 🌊 Why This Matters
The whole reason behind this build is simple:
Create a portable off-grid kayak basecamp for places where Trudy Thunder is just too big to take.
With the frame complete and the winch system installed, the box is now much closer to becoming a fully functional:
sleeping unit gear hauler kayak transport rig off-grid overnight setup
This is the stage where the build really starts to feel real.

Good morning! So yesterday, you know, I know there's a lot of YouTube creators out there
that are actually shooting and building all at the same time. I struggle with that. I really do
because I'm in my head designing the project and the video. I know the video is the project
because either I'm designing that. I have so many projects I got overloaded and so focusing is a
challenge. I'm focusing on a video while I'm focusing on building an RV for instance because
I don't have a plan. I don't work with plans. I wing it. We're just designing on the fly.
So I've got it all framed out or not all framed out. I still have to put some support structures
up here. I have found a really good resource for material and I'll be picking that up
probably tomorrow. The panel for the roof and a couple of interior panels and I've got some panels
that I remembered. I remembered I got over half the wall outside wall material.
Anyway, we're framed up. Rough frame. I'm still going to come in
giving a lot of consideration and when I built the bed for the RV
because it was open framework. I used a bunch of gussets and it really helped square things up
and it adds a whole lot of structural stability. So I think I'm going to put gussets on all four
corner posts and then one up here. That way when we have the stuff on the roof
it'll be super stout. I've made another. All right, so I got the little window goes here.
I'm going to have tail lights. So I have the trailer has has tail lights but I'm going to put
some about like that so that that's at eye level because the trailer lights are down low. I found
a really good price on these. A pack of two for like 12 bucks. So I'm going to replace both. This
one does not work anymore. So I'm going to put two new tail lights on the trailer.
Here's how it comes. You get them in three different colors. They come in two packs of two.
I didn't realize that. So now I have four more. That's okay. I'll use them for something.
New tail axle there. Oh, so when we when I first started working out here on my land
and did not have a tractor I needed to drag some stuff out of the woods and so I bought a little
ATV winch and receiver mount. Well, I've been wanting to do this kind of project for a very
long time and about a year ago we were driving around and yappy saw a little trailer so we
stopped and I scored a trailer and that trailer some guy had built to haul his ATV. He had
fabricated this winch mount. I'm like oh that's great. It had a hand crank. I said well I got a
little I'll put that on there. So this is going to be powered through the seven way. I have another
container right now. Control is in that ammo can. Another ammo can I'm going to mount here
with the tray and that will hold the controller. The reason is because this is on the tilt. So
when I pull that pin that box goes up. So here's here's the I have another another product. I'm
taking the casters as you saw from the other. I'm thinking I'm just gonna make a big big dolly
so that tilts all the way up. Oh let me show you.
Just like that. So I have the winch but that's a problem I didn't anticipate right there.
I might have to lose my ammo can.
This was this was just a my intention is to use the tractor to pick that up and shut it down.
The tractor will pick up a thousand pounds so I should be able to pick that up without any issue.
But in worst case scenario I can make that work. I'm not sure there would need I need to do a
I need to do some engineering on it. All right but anyway so while I'm waiting on the guy to
show up I'm gonna continue doing some wiring and gusseting and getting ready to skin it.
Stay tuned. I have a hot tub. This is the next day. If you ever decide to buy a hot spring
spa pay attention to the sub panel. Because I didn't. I thought I knew what I was doing but I
had no clue and ended up having to by the seat of my pants fabricate a whole special hot spring spa
sub panel that'll fit on that post. Anyway we're talking about RV camping. We're not talking about
hot tubs. I have got my framing done. Now this is all recycled lumber just so you know except
for the new sheet of plywood that daddy had in his shop. Today I went to the local lumber yard
and I scored in their cull material. I got a sheet of half-inch plywood. Looks like somebody was
parking their car on top of it but that's okay because I'm gonna cover it with oil-based paint.
We're gonna put it on the roof. I got two sheets of 4x8 beadboard. I'm excited about that
and I already have two 4x8 sheets of plywood siding in the green box so I'm gonna I'm gonna
be a little creative with with the beadboard. I don't think that I think part one of these sheets
is gonna be outside and one of them is gonna be inside. Not sure what's gonna wear yet but
we're coming along. Starting to pull pull some wires. I mentioned I'm gonna have tail lights
back here. Yep so that's where we are with the progress. I went and put in gussets on all corners
and man that thing is solid. I have no concerns about putting the kayak up on top of that.
Although I've had a development in a good kind of way and I may not be putting a rack on top of
this after all. It may just end up with solar panels because I've got a roof mount AC unit
on the way. Yeah that's gonna make things different. Interesting. All right.
