White breasted Kingfisher

White-breasted Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) is known for its striking bright blue wings and back, chestnut head, and white throat and breast. Despite being called a “kingfisher,” it often hunts away from water—eating insects, lizards, frogs, small birds, and even rodents. It is found across South and Southeast Asia, from India to the Philippines—it adapts well to urban and rural areas. It nests in burrows dug into earth banks or termite mounds, both near and far from water. It is highly territorial and often seen perched alone, watching for prey.
यह पक्षी अपनी चमकीली नीली पीठ और पंखों, भूरे सिर तथा सफेद गले और छाती के कारण बहुत आकर्षक दिखता है। नाम ‘किंगफिशर’ होने के बावजूद यह अक्सर पानी से दूर शिकार करता है — कीड़े, छिपकलियाँ, मेंढक, छोटे पक्षी और यहाँ तक कि चूहे भी खा लेता है। यह दक्षिण और दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया के देशों में पाया जाता है, भारत से लेकर फिलीपींस तक — और शहरों तथा गाँवों दोनों में आसानी से रह सकता है। यह मिट्टी के किनारों या दीमक के टीले में सुरंग बनाकर घोंसला बनाता है, चाहे वह पानी के पास हो या दूर। यह बहुत क्षेत्रीय (territorial) स्वभाव का होता है और अक्सर अकेला बैठकर अपने शिकार पर नज़र रखता है।
