The Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis) is one of the largest and most distinctive kingfishers found across South and Southeast Asia. It is instantly recognizable by its massive bright red bill, which resembles that of a stork and gives the bird its name. Its plumage is striking, with an olive-brown head, green back, blue wings and tail, and buff-colored underparts. Both males and females look alike, making them difficult to distinguish by appearance alone. This kingfisher prefers habitats near large rivers, lakes, and mangroves, where it perches quietly before diving to catch fish, crabs, frogs, and even small reptiles. Despite its size, its flight is heavy and direct rather than graceful, and it is often located by its loud, far-reaching calls—ranging from a whistling “peu-peu-pow” during breeding season to a laughing “ka-ka-ka” used as a contact call. #birds #wildlife #photography #nature #birdwatching #birding #shortvideo #typesokingfishers
