In March of 2019, I set out on my third trip to India in just over a year. This time, I would be traveling exclusively through the northeastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya. It’s a beautiful area that isn’t frequented by many tourists and was an absolute dream to explore. Come along with me as I make the journey from my hometown of Miami to northeast India via Qatar Airways’ Economy Class!
I was super excited to be flying Qatar Airways for the sixth time. Their Economy Class is probably the best in the world!
My long travel day started at Miami International Airport, where I caught my 12-hour flight to Doha, Qatar on an A350-900 with a 3-3-3 configuration. The flight was two hours shorter than usual due to the winds! This flight is the only way to get from Miami to Asia as of March of 2019.
They provide you with fantastic entertainment options including 20 different movies, as well at TV shows and games. On the flight, I just so happened to be seated next to a couple of fans!
For my in-flight meal, I went with the paneer tawa masala, which is made with a non-melting cottage cheese and also contains dal and rice. The paneer was ridiculous! I had it with some bread, cheese, a brownie, and a KitKat. Four hours into the flight, I watched the Kevin Hart movie “Night School,” which was hilarious!
I slept about 8 hours straight and was super comfortable since Qatar Airways’ Economy Class provides you with tons of leg room. I woke up in time for brunch and got some eggs with mushrooms.
Qatar Airways also gives you a package containing socks, an eye mask, a toothbrush, and toothpaste so you can freshen up before you land. The bathrooms are very spacious, so you’re not cramped while you brush your teeth!
After a really smooth flight, we landed in Qatar. I recommend moving around during the flight so your legs don’t get stiff. The airport in Doha is probably the best airport in the world and it’s very efficient to get from one terminal to the next.
With 2 hours until my flight to Kolkata, I tried to see if I had access to any lounges, but I didn’t. So instead, I decided to show you a bit of what the airport has to offer, including its restaurants, chocolate shops, a giant teddy bear, and luxury cars that are for sale there!
After boarding my next flight, a Boeing 787-8, I took my seat, which had lots of leg room that was super close to the bathroom. The movies were the same as the last flight, and I love that they give you a wet towelette. They provide you with a menu. All of today’s selections were Indian food, so I went with chicken curry and basmati pulao. It was amazing!
The 5-hour flight to Kolkata was super smooth. I was able to get a lot of work done on the flight and recharge my batteries. From there, I had to wait 2.5 hours until my Indigo Airlines flight to Guwahati.
While I waited, I got some piping hot chai with ginger. Always have your ticket printed out when going through airports in India for your convenience. My flight was moved up, which is rare. While I waited, I grabbed some idli and vada for breakfast. They were served with sambar, coconut chutney, and mint chutney.
My 4 a.m. meal was fantastic! I love southern Indian food. The mint chutney was outstanding! From there, I went to my gate and boarded my flight. And after 30 hours of traveling, I finally arrived in Assam at 6:20 a.m.
I got my bags, went to an ATM, and requested an Uber. The ATM wouldn’t let me withdraw the amount I wanted, which kind of sucked. But I was immediately taken my how relaxed Guwahati was when compared with other areas of the country. It was also cooler, drier, and foggier.
My Uber took me to my Airbnb in the Old Bazaar area, about 32 minutes from the airport. The area is full of food joints I couldn’t wait to visit. Guwahati seemed like a completely different type of India and I was so excited to explore it.
After 30 minutes, I arrived at my Airbnb. While it was a 30-hour travel day, it was worth it to be in Guwahati. Flying Qatar Airways most of the way made it much more pleasant!
If you enjoyed coming along on my travels from Miami to Guwahati, please give this video a thumbs up, leave me a comment, and subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming content. I’ll see you in the next travel/food adventure!
I love some Indian food.
The meat, outstanding. Best thing to do is do this and go in here get some of that.
This is like the best thing in the world.
Yo what's up guys David Hoffman here from David's Been Here. Today I'm super excited because I'm
going back to India. Third time's a charm. I'm so freaking thrilled. This time I'm actually going
to two states. I'm going to Assam and Meghalaya. These are located in northeastern India between
Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. And up in this pocket of India there's actually seven states
so the seven sisters plus the Sikkim to the left which is straddled between Nepal and Bhutan and
China. But yeah I'm going to this area because I really want to explore a different part of India.
I've gotten so many comments about this area and just it looks so amazing. Food, culture and there's
a lot of national parks so there's a lot of animals, wildlife. So I mean it's a good 14 days
on the ground. What I love about it is that I'm exploring two different states. Really Assam but
Meghalaya I mean it was worth it just to add those days and go there. And I'm super excited to fly
Qatar Airways again. This is my sixth time flying them. I've flown them in business class twice and
then I've flown them four times in economy. Economy is amazing. It's part of the best economy class in
the world. Now let's go to the flight.
Hey how are you doing?
Thank you so much.
All right so we just took off. We have actually only a 12-hour flight on this Qatar Airways flight
from Miami to Doha and we're flying on a A350-90 so it's a 3-3-3 configuration. I'm here on the
aisle. This is actually 40D so I'm on the back of the plane and I love this airline. As you can see
amazing TV entertainment is unlimited. I mean easily like 20 different movies I haven't seen
to choose from right here. You have also TV shows, games and I can't wait for the food because I'm
super hungry. We usually get food around like you know 30 to 90 minutes in so it really depends.
If there's turbulence they'll postpone it a little bit. If not they'll bring out right away and I'm here
with my friends from Miami from India. I see you guys watch my videos right? Yeah we do and
it's amazing. It's an amazing video. They just gave me a menu. So open this side it tells you the main
meals. So we have chicken, chicken pomodoro, we got some paneer, tamar masala. So we have some
Indian food right? Amazing. I went with the paneer so that is cottage cheese in India.
It's a vegetarian dish with some dal, some rice. I also got some cognac.
Very strong. Wow this paneer is ridiculous.
So delicious and the dal with the rice.
They also gave us some bread, KitKat, some cheese, water, a brownie. Okay so we've been on the flight
for four hours. I'm watching a movie called Night School with Kevin Hart. This guy's freaking
hilarious. Eight hours to go. Look at this. I'm going to bed. Alright guys I'll see you in Qatar.
Just woke up. Slept like eight hours straight. Oh my god. I already slept well. The great thing about
economy here is that you get to stretch out and have a lot of space here. I mean
it's like easily my almost my entire arm between me and my screen which is amazing.
It's like brunch, breakfast brunch. Drink lots of water, stay hydrated.
I think it's just mushrooms. I could be in like. Slept well? Slept like crazy. Yeah slept like eight hours or
it was amazing. Alright so here's our screen.
Flight map right. So right now we are flying over Turkey. That is the city of Batman. So we only have
two hours to go. I'm gonna have some breakfast, drink some water, have some coffee and get ready for my
connection. What a great flight. It wasn't bumpy at all. So in case you guys didn't know Miami only
has one flight to Asia and that is to Qatar. The flight is usually 14 hours from Miami to Qatar.
Today it's actually 12. They told me there's a lot of winds so they actually cut two hours which is
amazing. Then on the way back it's usually 16 hours, 16 and 20 minutes. So it's a really really long
flight but it's the only way to get from Miami to Asia at the moment. And now this is the reason why
I flew Qatar because it connects to India really quickly. It could have done what I did last time
which is gone through Germany but there was no way to get to Calcutta and then from there to
Guwahati. So Qatar Airways gives this little package and inside there's some socks, there's a eye mask
but they also give you toothpaste and a toothbrush which is great because you know before getting
off the flight you should definitely come here and brush your teeth really quick.
Really spacious, a lot of space in here. Thank you, thank you. Okay so we landed here in Qatar.
It was a super smooth flight. We had a little bit of bumps when I was sleeping but everything's good.
What I recommend is you definitely gotta walk around during these like long flights because
your legs like cramp up after a while. So definitely stretch. I gotta say though this
business class looks amazing. Damn this is sick. A350, Qatar, awesome. I've been to Qatar airport
like six times like I said before and this is probably the best airport in the world. I mean
you can see it's gorgeous, super high ceilings, all like silver, beautiful buildings. I mean just
amazing. It's a big airport but luckily they make it very efficient to get from one terminal to the
next. And now what we're doing is I have to go through transfers. I have to go to my plane. I leave in
three hours so I have time and I might be able to go to a lounge because I'm ruby with Oneworld.
I'm gold with American but ruby with Oneworld so hopefully we can get some lounge access
and I can recharge my battery and relax. So my flight to Qatar leaves at 6 55 and the gate is
C7. We're boarding like at 6 so I still got some like two hours to go, two and a half hours.
So I'm gonna look to see what lounge I'm allowed access into. There's two lounges here. There's the
Al Sawa lounge and the Al Motajan lounge. Unfortunately ruby doesn't give me access to
any lounges. That sucks. I mean American Airlines gold but no access to lounges here in Qatar. But this
Qatar airport is amazing. There's multiple different like gate terminals. There's ABCDE.
I'm in C so I have to walk this way. As you can see they have Harrods here. They have a gold shop.
They have chocolate shops. They have a huge teddy bear that's been sitting there for a few years
and they even have cars for sale. There's a Lamborghini there and a Mercedes. The Lamborghini
is ridiculous and yeah I mean this is like a rich man's airport. That's what I feel about it. I mean
it's not like all gold but basically all like platinum and silver. So amazing. Look F1 right
here. Look at this. So cool. When you travel it's really hard to get internet. Sometimes airports
charge you for internet but here in Qatar they don't charge you for wi-fi. You can just get on
your phone. Go on to the wi-fi network and then put your phone number in. They give you an access
code and if you can't do that just come here to the IMAX and use the internet. You know check your
email. Do whatever you want. Amazing. Man there's so many things. On the way to my gate I just keep
stopping. So we started boarding and what happens here in Qatar is when you board you actually go
through a little security area. Then they sit you down in your zone. So there's three zones and I'm
sitting in zone two. It's been a long three hours but I'm super excited because we're about to board
a flight and I want to mention to you guys that Guwahati is not the capital of Assam. I was
incorrect on that. It's actually Disport but Guwahati is like the central business hub where like
everything's done there. All the commerce is done there. Let's board a flight. Let's go. Hey how are
you doing? Good evening. How are you doing? Good. Very good. Thank you. Let's say we're finally boarding.
We're finally boarding. Okay so I'm sitting here in 26k which is an emergency aisle seat and the
reason I chose this seat is because I have lots of leg room as you can see. Just stretched myself
out. I can walk straight to the bathroom whenever I want and yeah I mean the window sort of sucks
that it's behind me but I'm gonna sleep most of this flight. I'm gonna have like dinner and then
pass out. I need to sleep because the second I get there I still have another flight and when I get
there I have to like hit the ground running. This flight is a Boeing 787-8. So it's a 3-3-3
configuration and here in the emergency aisle we have a tv that comes out like that. Wow right there.
Big tv. Qatar Airways has so much entertainment. It's like it's unbelievable. I really love...
Well can I do anything? Okay. Choose a language. English. Yeah it looks like all the movies are the
same as the last flight and I've seen basically everything I want to see. Maybe I'll watch this.
Johnny English. The one thing you get on every flight doesn't matter the class you're in on
Qatar Airways is a wet towel to clean your hands. This is crucial. I love this. They give you a menu
even in economy class. I know I showed you this in the earlier flight but I want to talk to you more
about it because this is something no other airline really does except like Middle Eastern
Airlines. They give you a menu and today it's basically all Indian food so I'm gonna go with
some chicken curry, basmati rice or they have vegetable tikki and paneer makhani. So tonight
I decided to go with some chicken curry. So we made it here to Kolkata. It was a super smooth
five-hour flight with Qatar Airways. I mean what an amazing flight. It wasn't bumpy at all. I slept,
I watched the movie, I edited. I mean I really got a lot of work done and I just try to like
you know recharge my batteries. I left my house over 24 hours ago you know getting to the airport
then a 12 and a half hour flight, three hour connection, five hour flight and now I'm here.
I went through immigration, came downstairs and getting my bags now and then from here I have to
go back upstairs to check in with Indigo. I have like a two and a half hour connection from right
now and then from here it's a one hour flight to Guwahati. So I still have a long way to go. I mean
I still have like almost four hours till I get there and then after that I get my bags and then
go straight to the Airbnb, leave everything and then go on a food tour. So I mean it's a long way
you know over 24 hours to get here but it's definitely gonna be worth it. I'm super excited.
Let me get my bags and go upstairs. I need to get some food. I'm starving. Before checking in and
going through security, I decided to stop here and get a chai. It's always chai time in India,
three in the morning, two in the morning, two pm, eight at night, it doesn't matter. People love
drinking chai. I love it as well. It's so good. Oh piping hot, piping hot. My god, this guy killed
me with this. He put some ginger in here. Oh it's very nice, very smooth, a little frothy, a little
milky. Oh it's so freaking good. This is the one thing I love about India. Chai, chai, chai, chai.
And I love how they give it to you in these mud cups. It's really cool but the mud cups are boiling
like it's way too hot. Gotta leave it here for a sec. So I thought I was gonna bypass them checking
to see if I had a ticket but they do check. So even if you come in and you have to reconnect,
they'll check if you have a ticket. So you always have to have your ticket printed or have it on
your phone downloaded. Unfortunately, I didn't have it so I had to go in my email, find it.
I thank god I found it and then they let me in and obviously it's your passport. So ticket and
passport before entering any airport in India, always remember that. So you have to go wherever
your gate is, you know B, and then right there there's a you know a screening. So you put the
bag in, they just see if everything's fine, there's nothing in there, then they put a tag on it, then
you go and you check in. Sorry, I'm extremely exhausted right now. Made it through security,
now we just gotta wait for the flight. We're actually boarding in 35 minutes right here at 23A.
They moved up the flight from 545 to 520. That's something that happens here very often in India.
They'll change flight times, they'll move them up, push them back. Sometimes people will cancel
flights. I mean that's like that's a little rare but I remember there was two different instances
where I saw like three or four canceled flights in the same day and I was like that's crazy.
It's amazing that it's four in the morning and this airport is bustling. I mean everything is
open, all the shops are open, all the food joints are open. There's a lot of snacks here but here
at the very end of the food boulevard, this guy was telling me that there is a place that serves
pani puri right now. So this guy just ruined my day. They don't serve pani puri until 8 in the
morning, but I can get some idli right now or maybe a dosa. So I couldn't find pani puri,
but it's fine because really for breakfast you should eat southern Indian food. Right here I
have two of my favorite things ever, idli and vada. So idli, it's like a dosa but like a spongy form
of it. So it's dough that has been steamed into this like round shape. This is a vada, which is
like a super crispy savory donut. Here we have some sambar, we have coconut chutney and here you
have mint chutney. So the best thing to do is just go like this. I'm back in India. Then go with the
Oh wow. I love southern Indian food. The mint, outstanding. A little spicy too.
Best thing to do is do this and then go in here get some of that.
Just round this in the sambar. Like that. Oh it's so good. If you like donuts, you'll like this.
These are actually like bite size, a little smaller.
But I like having it with the spicy mint chutney. So again, mix it.
This is like the best thing in the world. I really, really love southern Indian food.
Oh wow, what an amazing breakfast. Southern Indian breakfast at four in the morning
at Kolkata airport is a must. Oh my god, that was just incredible. I was so hungry. For me,
my entire clock is off because it's really like dinner time in Miami. So I mean, it's okay though.
I was starving. Now I'm full and yeah, my flight is boarding right now in the next six minutes.
So I'm walking over to 23 a.m at 22. I'll be there in a second.
Indigo, here we go.
Hello, how are you doing? Good morning. Thank you.
All right, so we just entered the plane and I'm sitting here in
8 a.m at the window. Oh, I need some water. Last flight, last flight and we're there.
Okay, so we finally made it here to Assam. Oh my god, it's been a whirlwind.
Over 30 hours to get here. 30 hours. So we're finally here. It's 6.20 in the morning.
I have to get my bags, get an Uber, go straight to my Airbnb and take a shower. I need a shower right now.
But yeah, I mean, it's a little chilly actually up here. As you saw, it was a little foggy as well.
You can see the Himalayas from the airplane. Pretty amazing. You see all the mountains from here too.
Once I got my bags, what I did is I went straight to an ATM. There's an ATM inside the airport.
The only problem was the ATM only can give me $10,000 which was a little messed up because I
wanted more than that. So $10,000 is like $140. And yeah, I just called my Uber. He's gonna be
here any second. He's in Suzuko. Suzuki, I mean. Where is he? Suzuki. Somewhere here.
Everybody's asking me, you know, to jump in a taxi but choose Uber. Uber is the most economical.
I think it's like $250. Okay, $250 to go to where I'm going. Amazing. Uber. Ready to go.
Yeah, it feels so different from the rest of India, this place. Feels more relaxed.
Okay, here we go. It's funny. Everybody's looking at me. Every single person's looking at me.
So my first impressions here in Guwahati is that it's calmer than the rest of India for sure.
I'm sure there's way less people here. It's probably like a million or two million, right?
It's very small. Small. It's Sunday morning, 6 30 in the morning. So it's just very chill. It's dry.
It's a little cold. You can see there's a lot of like smoke right now. A lot of people out. I don't
know what they're doing because there's no school today. Oh, for the exam. Wow, look at that.
So many people. Online exam. And we have to drive about 32 minutes to get to my Airbnb and it's in
the Old Bazaar, right? Old Bazaar. Isn't it called the Old Bazaar? What's it called? Degree Pugri.
Degree Pugri. And that's Old Town. That's where a lot of the good food joints are. And yeah,
this is just a different type of India. Northeast India is completely different from the rest of
India. It's like a separate world. Again, there's seven different states here. Seven sisters. And
there's also Sikkim, which is straddled between China, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. So up there.
But this is a whole different world. I'm so excited. I've been trying 30 hours and I'm like
ready to go. Long journey. So we were pretty excited to explore. This is the river that
basically makes Assam, Assam because it runs completely through. It comes from China,
comes completely through it and then it empties out into Bangladesh.
It's an amazing river. As you can see, it's very low right now because we're in the dry season.
So after a 30 minute drive, we're here. My Airbnb. Wow. What's up guys? Amazing. Man,
maybe I should get some grapes. These guys. Well guys, we had such an adventure today.
30 hours in transit to get here to Guwahati. Wow. That was a long journey. Hope you enjoyed it. We
did three flights. Flying Qatar Airways economy class is the best. It really is the best. If you
have to fly economy class, Qatar Airways is the way to do it. And if you're going from Miami
to India or Asia, it's probably best to go with Qatar because you go direct to Qatar and then
connect from there. It's a lot easier than connecting in Dallas or New York or Chicago
or LA. But yeah, guys, I hope you love this video. If you did, please give me a thumbs up,
leave me a comment below and subscribe to my channel for more awesome travel content. I'll
see you on the next travel adventure in Assam, India. I'm so excited. Peace.
