Poland picked up their second consecutive tie-breaker win at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Thailand, surviving a spirited Belgium in Saturday’s late eighthfinal in Bangkok to advance to the next elimination round. The number three team in the FIVB World Ranking will take on number one Italy in one of the two quarterfinal matches set to take place on Wednesday, September 3.

Poland and Belgium delivered a rollercoaster battle, in which the western Europeans took the lead in the overtime of the first set, the central Europeans won the next two sets to take control, but the Yellow Tigers battled on and pushed the match to a tie-breaker, which went the way of Poland, 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10).

Poland’s effort in offense (65-52 in successful swings) and in net defense (15-10 in kill blocks) made the difference in this tough duel. Outside hitter Martyna Lukasik led the way with 20 points, including one block and two serving aces. Middle blocker and captain Agnieszka Korneluk impressed with five kill blocks and an ace towards a 15-point tally, matching that of opposite Magdalena Stysiak, who put up two blocks. Poland’s second opposite Malwina Smarzek also reached the double digits with 13 points. Her tally featured two serving points and two stuffs.
