Orphaned baby elephant Nabulu is rescued | Sheldrick Trust
Apr 7, 2026
She was sighted all alone by Oloisukut Conservancy Rangers in the Mara, estimated to be under two years of age, the rangers informed KWS and proceeded to monitor the calf for the next two weeks - in the hope that a passing herd would take her in. Sadly this never happened and, being under two, she was at serious risk to predation without the protection of a herd, and in need of milk.
So it was on 1st February that, having received permission from the head of the KWS, a rescue was mounted. The SWT/KWS Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit led on the rescue and by nightfall, this little girl arrived at our Nairobi Nursery.
She has been named Nabulu, which means 'growing' in the Maa language of the Maasai Mara.
