“Suddenly awakening from a dream, where heaven and earth stretch infinitely in all directions.”
Legend says that The Yellow Emperor once fell asleep at noon and dreamed of entering the Kingdom of Huaxu, where he realized the true principles of governing a nation.

This piece was first recorded in the Shenqi Mipu (1425). Its commentary states:
“This melody is an ancient piece from primordial times, even older than Dunshi Cao. One tradition claims it was composed by the Yellow Emperor himself, while another says he ordered Ling Lun to compose it.”
Although these claims cannot be fully verified, the fingering techniques suggest that the composition indeed dates back to a very early period.

According to the Liezi, in the chapter “The Yellow Emperor,” the emperor once worried about governing the state. One day during a midday nap, he dreamed of entering the land of Huaxu. The people there lived carefree and completely free. Upon awakening, he finally realized the true way of ruling a country.

This version was reconstructed by Yao Bingyan. The melody is light and flowing. As Wu Zhenping commented:

“Through the graceful plucking, brushing, hooking, and lifting motions of the right hand, combined with the flexible vibrato and sliding techniques of the left hand, the piece evokes dance-like steps and joyful excitement, giving the music a full spirit of optimism and a festive, song-and-dance character.”
