At some point in this painting’s life… someone changed him.
This Victorian portrait arrived in the studio heavily damaged, overpainted, and missing key parts of the sitter’s identity. What began as a technical restoration quickly became something far more interesting... an investigation into how and why this man had been altered over time.
As layers were carefully removed, small details began to emerge. A bow tie that didn’t quite belong. The suggestion of a moustache that had been softened or removed. And perhaps most significantly, the loss of his original hair — replaced at some point to reflect a different version of himself.
In this final episode, I bring everything together.
From reconstructing the missing hair with restraint and historical sensitivity, to exploring the influence of figures like Prince Albert on Victorian style, this is about more than restoring a painting — it’s about understanding the life it’s lived.
