I knew almost nothing about this painting when I bought it. No provenance, no exhibition history, and an artist’s name I didn’t recognise. All I had were a couple of auction photographs and a feeling that there was something special hiding beneath decades of dirt and discoloured varnish.
In this video I investigate the Dutch artist Gerardus Hendriks, explore the rich tradition of Dutch marine painting, and carry out a full restoration of this atmospheric harbour scene. From careful cleaning and structural treatment to retouching, varnishing and frame restoration, we’ll discover whether my instincts were right.
