China’s Misty River is Too Perfect to Be Real — A Hidden Fairyland
The Misty Xiaodongjiang River is located in the Dongjiang Lake Scenic Area in Chenzhou, Hunan, China. It is a narrow river valley secret landscape stretching about 10 kilometers. Because the dam upstream releases lake water with a year-round temperature of 8–10°C, a noticeable temperature difference forms between the water and the air only from April to October each year (especially from June to September). As a result, dreamlike advection fog rises above the river at dawn and dusk.
The best viewing time each day is from 5:30–8:00 in the morning and 17:30–20:30 in the evening. The thin mist drifts like silk over the emerald river, winding around the green mountains on both sides, turning the scenery into a flowing Chinese ink painting. A small boat and a fisherman in red casting his net through the mist create the most enchanting scene of this fairyland.
Shrouded in ethereal mist and serene poetry, this place is known as the “Hidden Realm of the East” and a “Fairyland on Earth” in southern China, a landscape that feels like a fantasy yet truly exists.
