Hello, everybody, David Shuster here. For several months, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has
looked and sounded like one of the saddest lawmakers in Washington. Now, he's also being
remarkably defensive and prickly. On Capitol Hill, watch Johnson's reaction to reporters'
question about the lack of any public hearings on the Iran war.
The House has not had a single public hearing with a cabinet official about the cost to American
taxpayers and to American service members. Why has the House not heard testimony from a cabinet
official about this? I don't know if you've noticed, but they've given us multiple briefings.
Well, we're in the midst of a couple of weeks long operation that's very sensitive in its
mission and scope, and you cannot go outside of the classified briefing to give to the public
the information because it would adversely affect our mission.
Adversely affect the mission to tell the public how much it costs or how long it will go?
And as for a mission that will be brief in only a couple of weeks, headline Trump officials
privately fear Iran war will grind on through September as 200 troops injured. Back to Speaker
Johnson, he insisted lawmakers have been fully briefed. We had the auditorium full of House
members. The American public is getting, I've just relayed to you the summary of the non-classified
information. All members are out talking about it around the clock. You're following them around
the microphones, getting their clips and insights and their opinions.
Man, he is agitated. Did you see the dismissive and angry head nod? Here it is again.
I've just relayed to you the summary of the non-classified information.
Johnson looks like he's about to cry. Let's keep going.
This is being watched very carefully, but we're in the midst of an operation that is winding down,
according to the president himself. We are very close to having the mission completed.
The Strait of Hormuz is an ongoing issue and he has, I think, rightfully called upon allies and
friends and other nations who depend much more than we do on the Strait of Hormuz being open
for their oil supply to step up and assist and put the terrorists and tyrants at bay.
It is true that Donald Trump has asked other nations to provide assistance and security
for ships in the Strait of Hormuz. They should be not only thanking us,
they should be helping us. But as Speaker Johnson knows,
that request is not going over very well. Despite the president's belated outreach
to several countries urging them to send warships to help escort ships through the Strait,
no allies have signed on so far. Germany's defense minister rebuffing the president's
pressure campaign saying, quote, this is not our war. We did not start it.
Other allies, including the UK and France, remain noncommittal.
Pressed by reporters about the oil shock to the economy, the lack of international
assistance in the Persian Gulf, and the contradictory Trump team reasons for the Iran
warp, Speaker Johnson began to melt down, addressing the media in a sing song manner
as if he was talking to children. Okay, we are standing for freedom.
We have taken out an enemy that was seeking to do us harm and wipe Israel off the map.
And that's a good thing. And it will be a great thing for the stability of prices going forward
and the calm around the world. So we ask our allies to step up and acknowledge that reality
and help us out. I think that's a very reasonable proposal.
Look how frustrated and angry he is. And some of us thought Speaker Johnson was on the verge
of a breakdown during the Epstein files votes late last year. Anyway, there was some dramatic
personnel news on this day in the Trump administration related to the Iran war.
And we have breaking news. Top counterterrorism official Joe Kent has resigned over President
Trump's war with Iran. The director of the National Counterterrorism Center posted on
social media saying, quote, Iran posed no imminent threat to the US. He also says it's
clear we started this war due to pressure from Israel. The headlines for Trump and his pro war
Republicans were brutal. Maniac Trump official scorched earth resignation send shockwaves major
defection. BBC top US counterterrorism official resigns over Iran war, urges Trump to reverse
course. Before serving as Trump's top counterterrorism official, Joe Kent ran for
Congress in Washington state. Speaker Johnson even campaigned for him. In his resignation letter,
Kent says Iran did not pose an imminent threat to the United States. Speaker Johnson bristled
and pointed to classified briefings. I don't know where Joe Kent is getting his information,
but he wasn't in those briefings clearly because the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War,
and everyone, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Kane, they had exquisite intelligence.
We understood that this was a serious moment for us. Had the president waited,
I am personally convinced that we would have mass casualties of Americans,
service members and others, and our installations would have been dramatically damaged. And so we
had to, the president felt that he had to strike first to prevent those mass casualties. That's
the summary. I can't tell you the classified part, but that's the summary that's made public
and it's accurate, yeah. Again, look at Johnson's frustration.
If the Republican House Speaker is feeling overwhelmed, well, perhaps that is understandable.
Polls now show Republicans getting swept out of power in the House by 40 seats in the midterm
elections. Americans blame Trump and the Republicans for problems with price affordability.
And Johnson still refuses to say one negative word about Donald Trump,
even when Trump embarrasses Johnson and puts the Speaker in incredibly awkward positions.
At the White House this week, Trump spoke about the precarious and slim GOP House majority.
We had one man who was very ill. It looked like he wasn't gonna make it.
I don't know, I won't mention his name. Should I? Do other people know his name?
Do you wanna mention it? He'll be proud. Go ahead, tell him this, sir.
Okay, well, thank you, Mr. President. Congressman Neil Dunn of Florida had had
some real health challenges and it was very serious and had had a pretty grim diagnosis.
And I mentioned it to the President. I said, Congressman Dunn is a real champion and a
patriot because he's still coming to work. And if others got this diagnosis,
they would be apt to go home and retire. What was the diagnosis?
It was, I mean, I think it was a terminal diagnosis.
He would be dead by June. Okay, that wasn't public, but yeah, okay.
It was grim, that's what I was gonna say. Johnson went on to point out that Congressman
Neil Dunn made a miraculous recovery and is still working and very much alive.
But being put on the spot like that by a slurring Donald Trump.
Well, Speaker Johnson's discomfort was clear. And Johnson has chosen to put up
with Donald Trump's boorishness and embrace Trump policies every day.
It cannot be easy even for a maggot diehard and it's clearly taking a toll on Speaker Johnson.
He seems increasingly upset and fragile. And even the Speaker appears to know that
Donald Trump is dragging down Republicans, endangering the GOP majority, and putting
Johnson's gavel in the midterms out of reach. The only question these days seems to be if
Speaker Johnson at one of these news conferences starts weeping and has a full emotional breakdown.
By the way, stickers mocking Donald Trump are now appearing at gas stations across
the United States. They are showing up now at gas stations by the thousands.
Stickers of Donald Trump saying I did that as drivers see the prices spin and skyrocket.
This weekend, sticker shock at the pump for millions of Americans as the average for a
gallon of regular gasoline ticks up 71 cents since the start of the war with Iran.
I don't understand. What happened to gas prices? Two weeks ago, gas was $2 and today gas is $4.
The groups that make these are offering several different themes.
In addition to I did that, there is my war did that. You voted for this. I'm starving Americans,
Putin's bitch, and FLOTUS as in loser of the United States.
Check out that video at the link below. It generated a lot of comments on YouTube. One
of the most popular was from Don who wrote, the Republicans did that. Indeed. I look forward to
reading your comments about House Speaker Mike Johnson seeming more depressed and frustrated
by the day. I'm David Shuster. Thanks for joining us.
