Ladies and gentlemen, my guest tonight is an Academy Award-winning actor you know from Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, and August Osage County. She now stars in After the Hunt. I don't feel comfortable having this conversation with you anymore. Everything is supposed to make you comfortable, Maggie. Not everything is supposed to be a lukewarm bath for you to sink into until you fall asleep and drown. And there are no rewards in death for suffering as much as possible in life. You've constructed a life that hides your accidental privilege, neediness, desperate desire to impress. At least I have the self-respect to be obvious about what it is that I want. But it's all lies. Please welcome back to The Late Show, Julia Roberts. Nice to see you again. I'm just overcome. Thank you. Do other people enjoy Julia Roberts? Is this a first? That is not a cue to do it again. I'm really keeping it together here. Well, listen. It's always nice talking to you. Since the last time you were here, huge milestone, you're an empty nester. Oh, yes. Just. Yes. We're empty nesters, and I'm just curious, at any point has your husband had to find you in your daughter's bedroom, turning slow circles, crying to yourself? Well. Because I had to guide Evie gently out of the bedroom, close the door, and tape it shut for several months. I don't know if sobbing now is the best jumping off point to our interview. Let's move on. Let's move on. I'll take that as a maybe. Anyway, how's it going so far for you? What's the fun part of it? Because it does get fun. It's all fun, honestly. It is all so delicious, and my kids, I know everyone thinks their kids are great. Well, I think my kids are great. Well, you should. I love hanging out with them and spending time with them, and fortunately, we have had lots of visits along the way of this emptiness. That's nice. So they enjoy your company as well. I think they do. They indicate that. Now, you star in the new film, After the Hunt, directed by Luca Guadagnino. I don't have to ask how you feel about your director, because you made that very clear. I've made it clear several times. There you go. There it is. You're in your Luca sweater right there. That's his head. And I can't tell, is that knitted into the weave of that sweater? It is. I can't explain how it's intertwined. It's there. You don't know how it got there? I was up all night. I thought you were saying you bought a white sweater, and when you put it on, his face just appeared in the sunshine. That's lovely. It's an amazing film. It's got an incredible cast. But I understand there was one cast member, so I hear, that was intimidating to you, which I find hard to believe. Chloe Sevigny, the fabulous Chloe Sevigny, who I had never met before, and Io had never met before, and Luca has worked with a number of times because she's fabulous. We were all rehearsing at my house, which was a joy and a privilege, and one afternoon we were rehearsing, we were at the kitchen table, and we were really grinding it out. Not really, but we had our heads down, let's just say. And the producer came in from the living room, and he said, Chloe should be here any minute. And I looked up, and my eyes just happened to catch Io's. We looked at each other and said, I'm scared. And she goes, me too. And my daughter, who was making herself some lunch, she said, I'm leaving. Why? And Luca goes, why? Yeah. Why? I'm with him. We're like, because it's Chloe. And here's the thing about Chloe. First of all, she's exceptional. And eccentric. Oh. Okay. And I, when she, and we all looked at each other. And Luca goes, what? You live here. You have to go get the door. So I go to the door, and I make my cheeks pink to make me look fetching and appealing. And I open the door, and I said, hi. Hi. No, she's so great. Maybe she's, why? Because she's intimidating. She's putting on the cool. She's thinking, this is where you live? Why did your daughter leave? Oh, when this happened, she goes, going through the garage. See you later, mom. She was vapor trails. Because we're all scared of Chloe. Oh, and she didn't want to deal with her mom's nerves. No, she was like, we were all, I was like, can I leave? Luca says, no. We have to take a quick break.
