Whether it's two distinct jewel-toned hats, a meticulously crafted headdress, a simple pair
of semi-rimless eyeglasses, complex and dramatic pieces that bring to life a gothic classic,
or watching red turn rust in 16th century England, a character's costume is key to telling a story.
One could argue that one's wardrobe in real life is also key. Does it make one appear elegant and
attractive on, say, the most important night in Hollywood, when, say, the most important
people in fashion will be judging how one looks? Anna? Um, just curious, um,
what do you think of my dress tonight? And the nominees are...
Avatar, Fire and Ash, costume design by Debra L. Scott. Frankenstein, costume design by Kate
Holly. Hamnet, costume design by Malgosia Terzanska.
Marty Supreme, costume design by Miyako Valizzi. Sinners, costume design by Ruth E. Carter.
And the Oscar for best costume design goes to Frankenstein.
This is the first Oscar win and nomination for Kate Potter. She's an acclaimed New Zealand-born
costume designer, renowned for her work in fantasy and sci-fi films.
On behalf of myself and the amazing team that I work with, the artisans, the alchemists,
the dream weavers, we're so grateful to the Academy for recognising our craft,
and it's been such a privilege to stand alongside Ruth Carter, Miyako Valizzi,
Malgosia and Deb Scott. I've just, it's been amazing knowing you all. And Guillermo,
I'm not going to cry. Thank you for the vision and for taking us on your journey. It's been a
great privilege to be part of it. All our nominations are your nominations. We share
this with you. A big shout out to our fantastic cast, and an extra one to Dan, Alexandre and
Dennis. And my family, who put up with a lot of ----. My darling daughter, who's my little Edie
to my big Edie. And just everybody who supported us along the way, the Netflix family, Scott, Miles,
I don't know anymore. I've lost it. But I'm so, so grateful. And thank you very much for
recognising our craft. Hair and makeup choices can make a performance come alive.
These artists delicately balance being bold, yet transparent, constantly asking themselves,
do I pull back? Or do I go for broke? These five nominated films are stunning examples of vision,
art and craft. Anna, would you like to read the nominees? Thank you, Emily.
Nominees are Frankenstein, Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cleona Fury. Kikuo,
Hiyoko Toyokawa, Naomi Hibino and Tadashi Nishimatsu. Sinners, Ken Diaz, Mike Fontaine
and Shunika Terry. The Smashing Machine, Kazu Hiro, Glenn Griffin and Bjorn Ravine.
The Ugly Stepsister, Thomas Volberg and Anne-Kathrine Sauerberg.
And the Oscar goes to Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cleona Fury for Frankenstein.
Oscar win and nomination for Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cleona Fury. The creature's
transformation took up to 11 hours each day, using 42 individually prosthetic pieces.
Fantastic. Old school. Oh no. Okay, such an honor to be here. Thank you so much.
While we're making this film, you know, we have the sense we're part of something very special
and tonight really confirms that. So thanks. Deepest thanks to the Academy. Deepest thanks
to our fellow nominees. Thank you to Netflix, producers Miles and Scott. Thanks to Oscar Isaac,
the most beautiful Mia Goth and of course my mate Jacob Elordi, who sat for 400 hours
in the makeup chair during filming. A personal thank you to my dear Meg and to our friend Guillermo
del Toro. You did it, mate. You brought our beloved Frankenstein back and we want to thank
you for Llamangos to help make your dream project become our dream project. Thank you, sir.
We want to thank all the prosthetics, makeup and hair people for all the hard
work they did. It's showed on the screen and we're indebted to you forever.
