Once upon a time, in a small village in the land of Israel, lived a young woman named Mary.
Mary was kind and gentle, and she loved God with all her heart.
One day as she was praying, something amazing happened.
An angel named Gabriel appeared and brought her a message from God.
"'Greetings, favored one,' said angel Gabriel, smiling warmly.
"'The Lord is with you.'"
Mary was surprised and a little scared. She had never seen an angel before.
"'Who are you?' Mary asked, her voice trembling.
"'Don't be afraid, Mary. God is pleased with you.'"
"'You are going to have a baby boy, and you will name him Jesus.
He will be very special and will be called the Son of God.'"
Mary was amazed.
"'How can this happen?' she asked, eyes wide with wonder.
"'I'm not even married yet.'"
"'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of God will make this possible.
Your baby will be holy and will be called the Son of God.
And guess what? Your relative Elizabeth, who is very old and couldn't have children,
is also going to have a baby.
She is already six months pregnant. Nothing is impossible with God.'"
Mary was filled with joy and wonder.
"'I am God's servant. May everything happen just as you have said.'"
Now Elizabeth was Mary's cousin.
She was much older than Mary, and for many years she and her husband, Zechariah,
had longed for a child, but they had been unable to have one because of their old age.
When Mary heard the angel's message, she was overjoyed.
Mary wanted to share this incredible news and rejoice with Elizabeth,
who was also experiencing a miracle from God.
So Mary packed her things and traveled to the hill country of Judea,
where Elizabeth lived with her husband, Zechariah.
When Mary arrived at Elizabeth's house, she called out,
"'Elizabeth, it's Mary!'
As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, something incredible happened.
The baby inside Elizabeth's tummy leaped with joy,
and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
She felt a special joy and knew that something wonderful was happening.
"'Mary, my dear!
Why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me?'
Elizabeth rushed to Mary and hugged her tightly.
"'Mary, you are blessed among women, and blessed is the child you will bear.'
As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her."
Elizabeth knew that Mary was pregnant even before she arrived with the help of Holy Spirit.
Elizabeth played an important role in comforting and strengthening her young,
newly pregnant relative.
Elizabeth exhibits true godly character.
She took care of Mary, nurtured her through her difficult time,
and gave her the strength to return to her family and to the people who mistrusted her.
Mary was overwhelmed with happiness.
She felt the love and support of Elizabeth and knew that God was working miracles in their lives.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months,
helping her as she prepared for the birth of her baby.
They laughed together, prayed together,
and talked about the wonderful plans God had for their children.
"'Look at those children, Elizabeth.
One day our sons will play and grow strong just like them.'
Elizabeth nodded, her hand resting on her round belly.
"'Yes, Mary, and they will have a special bond.
John will prepare the way for Jesus.
I feel blessed knowing that our sons will be part of God's great plan.'"
One day, as the time came for Elizabeth to have her baby,
Mary knew it was time to return home.
She hugged Elizabeth and promised to visit again soon.
"'Take care, Elizabeth. I will miss you.'"
"'And I will miss you too, Mary.
May God bless you and the child you will bear. Come back soon.'"
They said their goodbyes, knowing that their friendship and faith
would always keep them close, no matter the distance.
Mary made her way back to Nazareth, her heart full of hope and joy.
She knew that God was with her and that her baby, Jesus,
would bring light and love to the world.
As Mary approached her home,
she thought about how she would share the news with Joseph, to whom she was engaged.
She prayed for strength and wisdom,
knowing that it might be difficult for him to understand at first.
In the meantime, Joseph, who had already heard rumors about Mary being pregnant,
he was having a hard time figuring what to do.
Angel Gabriel appeared in Joseph's dream that night.
"'Joseph, son of David,
not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
The child she carries is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.'"
When Joseph woke up, he felt a deep peace and knew that the angel's words were true.
He went to Mary and said,
"'Mary, I believe you. We will raise this child together.'"
Mary and Joseph began to prepare for the birth of Jesus,
knowing that their lives were part of God's wonderful plan.
Their hearts were filled with love, faith, and excitement for the future.
Elizabeth gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy,
and they shared in her joy.
On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child
and were going to name him after his father, Zechariah.
But Elizabeth spoke up and said,
"'No, he is to be called John.'"
Then they made signs to his father, asking what he would like to name the child.
Zechariah asked for a writing tablet.
To everyone's astonishment, he wrote,
"'His name is John.'"
Zechariah, who could not speak for the last few months,
suddenly began to speak.
This astonished everyone present there.
All the neighbors were filled with awe,
and throughout the hill country of Judea,
people were talking about all this miraculous event.
Zechariah's tongue was finally free.
Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking,
"'What then is this child going to be?'
For the Lord's hand was with him."
Later, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.
The Savior was born in a stable,
and just as the angel foretold,
this was the beginning of an era.
