The Bear and the Two Travellers
Once upon a time, two friends named Leo and Max were walking through a forest on a warm,
sunny day. They laughed, told stories, and enjoyed the shade of the tall trees.
The forest was peaceful, and the air smelled of pine and wildflowers.
As they walked deeper into the woods, a sudden rustle came from the bushes ahead.
Out lumbered a huge, growling bear, its eyes glinted, and its nose sniffed the air.
The two friends froze in fear. Without thinking, Leo dashed to the nearest tree
and scrambled up to the highest branch, leaving Max behind.
Poor Max didn't have time to climb, so remembering something his grandfather once told him,
he quickly dropped to the ground and lay still, holding his breath and pretending to be dead.
Bears don't bother with people who are already gone, his grandfather had said.
The bear lumbered over to Max, sniffed around his head, and gave a few deep snorts.
Max stayed completely still, not moving a muscle.
After a tense moment, the bear grunted and slowly walked away into the trees.
Once the danger passed, Leo climbed down from the tree.
He smiled awkwardly and asked,
That was close. What did the bear whisper in your ear?
Max stood up, brushed off his clothes and looked at Leo calmly.
He told me, Max said, to never travel with a friend who leaves you when you need him most.
Leo's face turned red with shame.
He realised he hadn't been a true friend when it really mattered.
From that day on, Max chose his friends more wisely,
and Leo worked hard to become someone worthy of being called a friend.
