Lawmakers Split Over Surveillance Law and Privacy Concerns
Lawmakers are gearing up to reauthorize a controversial Surveillance Powers law. Trump officials met with lawmakers yesterday to move it forward.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the U.S. government to collect the communications of foreign nationals abroad without a warrant. Civil liberties advocates and some lawmakers, however, have long warned that Americans’ communications can also be swept up in the surveillance. The debate over how to address those concerns has split lawmakers across party lines, with both Republicans and Democrats raising questions about the law’s impact on Americans’ privacy.
