When a joint is injured, you pulled muscles, stretch a tendon, these injured areas will start to swell. It is swelling because your body's inflammatory response system has been triggered by the injury. Blood cells and fluids are being sent to the injury to repair the damage which can increase it's size and hurt.
-Why Ice is so good:
Ice works by slowing this overreaction caused by our inflammatory system which limits the healing process of injuries.
