In traditional Chinese culture, the lion is believed to be a powerful and auspicious creature. According to legend, loud drums, firecrackers, and the fierce movements of the lion scare away monsters and bad spirits—especially the mythical creature Nian (年獸), who was said to terrorize villages at the start of the new year.
