I find myself in the predicament that all fiber artists must find themselves in at some point.
We are gathered here today in solidarity of having too many yarn scraps. Be it leftovers
from other projects, secondhand finds, or hand-me-downs, these little bits of yarn taunt us.
They clutter up our stashes and overwhelm us, but no more. Today we find a purpose for all of these.
This is not even all of them, by the way. Today we're going to look at a collection of projects
that use a very little amount of yarn, hopefully, and we can get inspired to use all of these
little bits and bobs that we've got. Can you hear my freaking cat in the background? Right on cue.
Caps, socks, scrunchies, scarves, these are all very common scrap busting projects and I think
they're classics for a reason. One of my very first projects was a bit of a scrap project. It
was a skinny scarf. It's not awesome, it was my first project ever, but it was a quick project
and definitely used a lot of scraps, so never knock just the skinny scarf, you know? But today
I want to offer you a couple more unique ideas that might get you a little bit more excited to
work through your scraps. I found a lot of free and paid patterns, but I would also encourage
you to do a little improvisation with these ideas. This is more of an inspiration curation
rather than a specific prescription for patterns, if that makes sense. I highly recommend to make
something your own and if you choose to improvise a project, don't just copy a picture of something
that you've seen exactly how you've seen it, make it even more special. I myself am a beginner
knitter and crocheter and there's not a project in here that I wouldn't feel comfortable making
or improvising myself, so I have faith in you. Most of these ideas and projects can be made with
one skein of yarn or less. I'm going to loosely organize these projects into the knit and crochet
categories, but with the caveat that you're creative, you can, you can figure it out. If you
want to knit something, I'm sure you can find a way to knit a crochet idea and if you want to
crochet something, I'm sure you can easily crochet a knit idea, so don't let those categories stop
you from feeling empowered. All right, I've kept you waiting for too long, let's start talking
projects. We're going to start out a little basic, I'm so sorry, but we're going to talk about hair
bows. I think that's a good place to start and sometimes saying the obvious thing out loud
is a good idea, so hair bow! I do really like these hair bows, I've never made one, so that's part of
the reason I'm thinking about them lately. They're very easy, like just a simple little icord or a
little crochet. I especially like the more loose weave mohair fuzzy, so if you've got a little
leftover mohair, that would be a really nice project, I think. Secondly, this is a good jumping
off point for these knit necklaces, I think that's an interesting idea. I like the knit chain, you
could do exactly the same thing you would for a hair bow, you could even use those things as the
same accessory. You could make a hair bow and also wear it as a necklace sometimes, or a necktie, I
think that's really sweet. Along the same lines of necklace, I like the idea of also knitting or
crocheting a little charm or a little medallion or something to go on there. You could do like a
little crochet shape, you could even make like a full charm necklace with this idea, or even a
little kind of tapestry charm vibe, something like these beaded ones that I've seen, you could easily
turn these into like a color work knit sort of thing. Obviously super tiny, it might curl up
quite a bit, but smarter people than me can figure this one out. Let me know in the comments if this
is a functional idea at all. You could put them in like a little frame, I've seen those little
embroidery ones. While we're around the neck, we can talk about little capes. I like this specific
style quite a bit, a little bit more scalloped and cute. This is a really easy one with crochet
because you can make it quite open work. I've also really like collars, those have been a big thing
for a long time so I know that you are probably thinking this too, but I specifically wanted to
a couple collar pattern ideas, styles, whatever that is maybe a little less common than you know
the typical frilly cutesy ones. These are also frilly and cutesy but in a different way. This
sweater pattern has this like daisy collar and I really think that's cute if you wanted to do a
little bit of a light fairy look without going too over the top. Similarly you could do a light clown
look with a more ruffle clowny collar. This could also lean a little bit Elizabethan if you wanted
to be extra frilly. Even just like really short layers I think could be really nice. So collars
are on my list. Move on to the wrists. I like a little arm warmer, something I don't see as much
as like a leg warmer which is on my list, we'll get to that. I have really long arms so a lot of
my sleeves are too short so I like the idea of having a little a little sleeve to add on under
my sleeves to extend the sleeves. I've also seen these called gauntlets, little wristlets, wrist
decor, wrist whatever. I like these wristlets. Pair that with the daisy collar, ultimate fairy look.
We can talk about now leg warmers, a classic. Leg warmers are super cute especially when they flare
out a little bit at the bottom, I think that's really nice. I don't like super tall ones necessarily
but really chunky and kind of flaring out at the bottom, I think those are really cool. That could
be cute in either a basic or a stripe. If you've got a lot of scraps that you want to put all
together I think this would be a really great scrappy project too. Socks, I know we all know
about socks but I have recently come across this sock pattern, maybe this is super common and I am
just like living under a rock. But these no heel spiral sock patterns, I think it's some sort of
vintage pattern where the ribbing is done you know in a helix and so when you pull them on
you don't need to worry about where the heel is, you also don't have to worry about knitting a heel.
An easy knit up project with a bunch of little scraps, I like these ones that are very stripy
and mismatched, leans into the scrappy project vibe very nicely. It's also super nice because
you can just kind of knit until you run out, you don't have to worry about like where the heel is
gonna be. I love this idea, I really want to get into some of these kinds of socks. And something
to wear over top of your socks, a little pair of slippers. Okay, come on, say it with me, these would
fit really well with that fairy look. Apparently I have a fairy theme going on with this list. These
little pointy toe slippers especially caught my eye. I don't need any more slippers, or do I?
Now we're gonna have a little intermission where I shout out myself. My last video I was making
some cute little hats and I thought these two work really well with this theme of little scrappy
projects because I made them with scraps. We've got the Juliet cap which was a very simple crochet
project, even if you've never crocheted you can figure this one out because I am a very basic
crocheter and I figured it out, so you can do it. High impact, low effort kind of project, this little
Juliet cap. And then also this little devil horn bonnet. I think it's so cute. If you've got red,
you can also make some sort of other color little demon. Imagine a little stripey demon bonnet,
that would be so cool. Somebody should do that and send me a picture. There was my self-promo
intermission. Moving on, another little hat that I love because it reminds me of Animal Crossing
is this acorn cap. This one is based on the Animal Crossing hat, super cute. This is more of, you know,
would take more of like a full skein or something, but you could also make this kind of scrappy,
especially if you have different shades of brown. I think that that could look really cute. Girl,
this is another fairy adjacent pattern, isn't it? All of these have been wearable so far, so let's
pop in with a little something something different, a little pouch. I love this Onigiri pouch,
it is super cute. This would be an easy knit or crochet project, I think. I specifically have a
person in mind that I want to make one of these for as a gift, so I'll probably be making one of
these soon. This is one of those things you can make as big or as small as you want. A simple
little rectangle, you could seam it together, you don't have to worry too much about the construction
if you're just wanting a quick little project. Onigiri pouch. Another little pouch, these pen
loop holders. I used to have an amazing journal that had an attached pen loop and I loved that
thing. Too bad I wrote in that journal all the time and now I don't have any more space in it,
so I'm using other journals that I have that don't have a little pen loop. I bought a little thing
that goes around it, but I could have just made one this whole time. These little pen loop would
be great for students, they would be great for people who are annotating things. You could make
a teeny tiny one and attach it to your little pocket notebook and put it in your purse or in
your pocket. Yeah, this serves a very practical function, which I like. Oh, we have a guest. Hi,
Brainy. You want to say something? Okay, great. We're going to move on to a little bit of crochet
specific, though some of these you can definitely knit, so you know, this is a very loose
categorization. Do with it what you will. This is just inspiration anyway, so the organization was
just for my benefit. Anyway, on to the crochet. We will continue on with the bag concept and I
have been really inspired to try some filet crochet. I'm not saying this right, I know it.
I really want to try something like that, and this little bag caught my eye. It's so
cute. You could line this if you were worried about things falling through. I need a little
evening bag, you know, for if I'm going to a wedding or something a little bit more formal,
and you can design your own pattern on the front. This style of crochet is very reminiscent of pixel
art to me, and I did a lot of that as a preteen. You can really let your creativity run wild with
this style of crochet. It's like doing color work without having to deal with doing color work. This
bag is definitely on my to-make list. Another little bag that I liked is this cute little
berry bag. Oh my gosh, another fairy. Unpredictable at this point, but this little berry belt bag,
but a berry belt bag. You could also make this, you know, a little shoulder bag. You could make
this a little cross-body bag. You could make this a little pouch, a little wallet. You could do
anything, but I love this specific pattern. And this is another one where obviously you
might want to have a lot of one specific color, but you could have different shades,
different tones of the same color, and I think that that would look really cute, especially
because berries in nature aren't always totally uniform, you know. Speaking of berries and cute
little dangly bits, I'm trying to do a cute little flow chart. I've organized this list
in a way that I thought would make sense and speaking it out loud now is like, girl, that was a
very loose association that you made. Another accessory. You've seen the headphone charms,
you've seen the bag charms. I really love those, so I'm going to add them to the list,
but I'm going to be specific and say I really like the flower ones. I especially like these
bleeding hearts. I definitely want to make something with the bleeding hearts. I've
wanted to make some headphone charms, so I'm thinking of doing a little bleeding hearts
headphone charm. Those are so cute, but I also like the bluebells or the lily of the valleys.
Those are very popular. I've seen a lot of free tutorials for the lily of the valleys. Not just
bag charms, not just headphone charms, but what if you made really big ones and you made it a little
scarf or a necktie? What if you made it a little charm for your house? This could be homewares,
this could be in your car rearview mirror, this could be a strand of them that you hang up all
across your room. There's just so much to do. Speaking of home goods, a little tapestry.
Another kind of obvious one, but we're going back to the filet crochet. I really like these smaller
ones, like hanging above a door or a window. You can make a little teeny tiny one. I really like
this unicorn one and it got me thinking about making a Rohan flag filet crochet. We're going
to get into some more Lord of the Rings in a minute, so buckle up, but I also really like
these wall art things. Any of these things can be framed and turned into wall art. This would
also be a super easy way if you wanted to knit something like this. There's some knit options.
If you were intimidated by color work and you wanted to start on a smaller project,
something like a little frameable art piece I think would be really perfect. And if you're
going to knit one of these, framing it would, you know, prevent it from curling up and all that, so
win-win. Another simple recommendation is a little coaster. I like this little apple one.
I also was thinking if you made two of these and you seamed them together, they could make a little
pouch or something. You could put your earphones in it, you could put your lighter in it, you could
put your coins in it. Coasters. Placemats. I love a scrappy placemat. I really am in the market for
making some placemats, so this is on my mind too. Scrappy placemats. And you can't talk about
crocheting with scraps without talking about granny squares, so I wanted to pop in a couple
of granny square ideas that I'm thinking about, and I'm thinking about a granny square sweater
that looks like the one from Animal Crossing. This one would definitely be less of a scrappy project,
but you could also make it with whatever colors you already have on hand. Back to the wrists,
I love these granny square mitts. I especially like this version with the black and white,
and I have a lot of neutral colors scraps at the moment, so something like this I think
might be in my near future. Just one or two granny squares and a ribbing. I think that's a pretty
basic pattern that would crochet up pretty quick, so love these. Another mitt. I love a crochet mitt
with the pretty little lacy details, so I just want to shout that out as well, especially a little
scalloped edge. Oh, so cute. I'm gonna pop this one in here because I don't know where else this would
belong. Little cat toys! My cats are obsessed, especially with my wool yarns. I love these
little banana peels. Those are so fun, and also these little pasta shapes. Those are cute, and
those can be in any color. They're cat toys. This category I'm calling belts, headbands, collars,
because I think many of these can jump across categories. I love these little floral crocheted
belts. I definitely want to make one of these. I don't have that many decorative belts, and I want
a decorative belt just like this, so this is definitely on my to-make list. Back to the
filet crochet. I should really look up how to say this, shouldn't I? Filet crochet. Filet crochet?
This headband, scarf, belt. You can do anything with this kind of thing, and again, get super
creative with it. Do some pixel art concept making. You could also make this so that it is home decor
sometimes, and then it's a headband sometimes, and then it's a belt sometimes. A multi-purpose
make. We talked earlier about knit collars, so a little shout out to a crochet collar. I really
like this kind of look for a crochet collar. Use heavily one color and then kind of dots here and
there of other little scraps that you might have, and then if you've got just a tiny amount,
something kind of similar to the Juliet cap, a little crochet choker of some little decorative
bits and bobs. You could even add beads to this if you have beads. I have long been seeing these
little button covers. Is that what they're called? And I've seen them, you know, people wear them all
the way down their button plackets. I like the concept of just one, maybe one at the tippy top. I
like this one that kind of is very Victorian silhouette necklace vibes. I also love this one
that looks like a little poppy, especially on a black button. That could be so cute over top of
your little pocket or something. Obviously the the concept of wearing them all the way down the
buttons is also cute, but I wanted to shout out just the single one. I have this category of just
very specifically fairy concepts, but honestly so many of these patterns fit the fairy theme.
But here we are. A leaf bandana, a little leaf bonnet. You can just knit the shape of the leaf
and then embroider on top with a different shade to make the leaf veins and call it a day. And then
to really hit the nail on the head of a fairy look, this flower hat. I've seen these felted
before. I hadn't ever thought about crocheting one, I don't know why, but look at that. Fairy.
Now this category is for my nerds out there, so these might not be for everybody. I love these
little potion bottles, a little crocheted potion bottle to put your dice in, or little jewelry, or
coins, or anything you want. Magic spells. On the same note, these little- I saw this one
called a pixie dust pouch. You can put, you know, a little- a little rock in it, or a coin. Your
little Aldi quarter. I told you we were gonna come back to some Lord of the Rings, but here we are.
These are little coasters that look like lembas bread and it's wrapped in the little green leaf.
I think you can either do, you know, the full coaster idea or just make the little pouch
that looks like the lembas bread pouch. And you know what, while we're here, why not make a little
fellowship pin, a little elven brooch. I just watched all of the extended editions in theaters
for the 25th anniversary, so I am very much of the Lord of the Rings mind. We're having some
recency bias. And you know what, on the topic of making some nerd ----, I think this is like DIY
merch vibes. I found these little crochet doll pattern base that you could make anything out of.
You can make your favorite character, you could make a loved one, you could make a voodoo doll
of yourself, you could make your character, you could make a cat, a dog, a bear, whatever you want
out of these little dolls. Cute. You need more cute in your life. You. And that's my whole list.
I really had to force myself to reel it in with this because I could have gone on forever. This
list started out as like 15 projects and now it's over 50, I think. So I might make another
installment of this at some point in the future, but for now I need to call it here and really
show some self-restraint. But if you have any cute little projects in mind, please drop them
in the comments below so that we can all be inspired by you. I have a bunch of ideas on my
Pinterest, which I have linked below, and I think I've got my Ravelry linked below. Some of these
patterns are saved on my favorites list there if you want some easy access. Otherwise,
all the links will be down there. I am now off to assign every single bit of yarn in my stash
one of these projects. Looking at all of these all together in my notes, I was just like,
damn, I want to make every single thing. And I hope you feel the same today. Okay,
have fun making something new. Bye!
