Certain foods contain powerful anti-cancer properties, yet most people don’t include them enough in their diet. In this video, Dr. Sethi — a Harvard & Stanford-trained Gastroenterologist — shares 7 science-backed cancer-fighting foods that may help reduce the risk of cancer and strengthen your body’s natural defense system. These foods are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and phytonutrients that support cellular health and may protect against DNA damage, chronic inflammation, and tumor growth.

I'm a gastroenterologist with training at Harvard and Stanford, and I manage gut cancers
on a daily basis.
Most people think cancer prevention means cutting things out, sugar, alcohol, ultra-processed
foods.
But what you add to your daily routine can be just as powerful.
I'm Dr. Saurabh Sethi, gastroenterologist and liver specialist.
On this channel, we make science simple with no myths, no noise, and no nonsense.
Here are 7 cancer-fighting foods and drinks you should know about.
Count it down from 7 to 1.
Seventh on the list is mushrooms.
Shiitake, maitake, and reishi are loaded with beta-glucans that train your immune system
to recognize abnormal cells early.
They also contain selenium, which protects your DNA from oxidative stress.
From a gut perspective, mushrooms act like natural prebiotics, feeding beneficial bacteria
that calm inflammation throughout your body.
Add them to your stir-fries or soups with garlic for a synergy that supports your gut
immune axis.
Before we move on, a quick note from today's sponsor, because prevention and innovation
go hand in hand.
This video is sponsored by Outside the Box Capital, and today we are talking about Oncolytics
Biotech, a company that spent over two decades quietly advancing a new class of cancer immunotherapies.
If you have watched my content before, you know I'm fascinated by the connection between
immunity, gut health, nutrition, and advanced therapies.
Oncolytics brings those worlds together in a unique way.
They are developing an investigational therapy called Belariorep, designed to help our immune
system recognize and attack cancer cells that usually hide in plain sight.
What makes this especially relevant is how it aligns with what we know about chronic
inflammation, immune escape, and the body's ability to fight disease when supported properly.
Here is how the mechanism works.
Belariorep is administered via IV.
The therapy uses a naturally occurring reovirus that preferentially replicates in tumor cells,
especially those with activated RAS signaling, which is common in many hard-to-treat cancers.
Once the virus enters those cancer cells, it begins to multiply, eventually bursting
the cell from within.
That's direct destruction.
But that is only half the story.
When the tumor cell bursts, it releases tumor fragments and alarm signals.
Those signals alert your immune system, essentially converting what oncologists call a cold tumor
into a hot tumor.
Suddenly, your T-cells, natural killer cells, and other immune components recognize the
threat and engage.
So, the two-part effect.
Direct tumor cell destruction plus training or priming of your immune system for long-term
vigilance.
What's especially compelling is the recent data.
Oncolitics just reported updated efficacy in anal cancer, that is, QMS cell carcinoma
of the anus.
They found an objective response rate of around 30%, which is more than double the current
standard of care for that indication.
And the median duration of response was 15.5 months, as compared to 9.5 months historically.
These are early results, but in diseases like anal cancer, where immune therapies have struggled,
this is an encouraging signal.
It tells us the science is moving.
Pilariorept targets cancers driven by the RAS pathway, a mutational driver in approximately
90% of pancreatic cancers and roughly 40-50% of colorectal cancers.
These are historically cold tumors for immunotherapy, so a therapy that can flip tumor invisibility
is groundbreaking.
This therapy is still investigational, but as a doctor, I find the science exciting because
it points to where the medicine of the future is heading.
Not just detection and destroy, but teach and empower the immune system in parallel.
In the context of your daily life, whether you are choosing the seeds, spices, herbs,
movement, stress management, or sleep hygiene, these are the behaviors that prime your immune
and gut-brain axis.
Just as Pilariorept primes the immune system at a molecular level, you prime yours at a
daily behavior level.
Once again, thanks to Outset the Box Capital for supporting this video and Oncolytics Biotech
for pushing the frontier of immunotherapy.
And now, let's get back to the foods that support your body's natural defenses every
single day against cancers.
Number 6th on the list is Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the foundation of the Mediterranean diet,
rich in polyphenols that lower inflammation and oxidative stress.
For the liver and gut, this means better fat metabolism and reduced toxic load.
Swap seed oils for cold-pressed olive oil.
It is a small change that compounds over time.
For high-heat cooking, avocado oil would be my top choice.
Fifth on the list is Garlic and Onions.
Members of the Allium family, they activate detox enzymes in the liver and slow tumor
growth.
From a gut microbiome perspective, they feed healthy gut bacteria and improve immune signaling.
Crush garlic and let it rest 10 minutes before cooking.
That is when allicin, the potent anti-cancer compound, forms.
Fourth on the list is Berries.
And I mean all kinds of berries.
Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, goji berries.
These are all packed with anthocyanins and allergic acids that protect DNA and calm inflammation.
They also improve gut barrier integrity and short-chain fatty acid production.
All you need is a handful of berries a day.
Just make sure you clean those properly using either vinegar or baking soda because berries
can have a lot of pesticide residues on them.
Next, we have Tomatoes.
Loaded with lycopene, tomatoes are linked to lower prostate and breast cancer risk.
Cook them with olive oil, avocado oil, or ghee because lycopene is fat-soluble, so your
body absorbs more of it that way.
Tomatoes also support the gut-liver axis by reducing oxidative stress.
Second on the list is Cruciferous veggies.
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, these are all rich in sulforaphane.
That's a compound that has been shown to reduce tumor cell growth in multiple studies.
Lightly steam or stir-fry.
Overcooking destroys their protective power.
Broccoli sprouts have multiple times the sulforaphane as compared to broccoli.
And number one on the list is Green Tea.
Green tea is rich in EGCG, a polyphenol shown to block tumor blood vessel formation and
enhance your body's antioxidant defense.
Matcha is a concentrated form of green tea, so has even more antioxidant potential.
Just make sure to skip the sugar.
A touch of honey is fine once you let your beverage cool down a little bit.
You can also add monk fruit or stevia without erythritol additive because erythritol has
been found to have side effects on the heart.
Thanks for watching.
