Hi kids!
Today, we're going to learn about a friendly and hard-working animal, the donkey.
Donkeys are part of the horse family, but they are the smallest members of the horse family.
They have long ears, strong bodies, and a gentle, calm nature.
The words donkey and ass are used for the same animal.
When the animal is tamed and lives with people, we call it a donkey.
When it lives in the wild, it is called an ass.
Most donkeys are about 3 to 4 feet tall at the shoulder,
but their size can be very different depending on the breed.
Mini donkeys can be as small as 3 feet tall.
Big donkeys can grow over 5 feet tall. That's as tall as a grown-up human.
Donkeys usually have gray fur, but they can also be brown, black, or even white.
Their bellies, noses, and the area around their eyes are lighter in color, often light gray or white.
Donkeys have big ears.
Their large ears help them hear very well, even from far away.
Their ears also help them stay cool in hot weather.
Donkeys have big eyes on the sides of their head, which lets them see almost all the way around.
This nearly 360-degree vision helps them spot danger quickly, without even turning their heads.
A male donkey is called a jack.
A female donkey is called a jennet or jenny.
A baby donkey is called a foal.
A mother donkey is pregnant for about one whole year.
She usually has one baby foal at a time.
The foal can stand and walk soon after it's born and stays close to its mother for milk, safety, and care.
Donkeys are found on all continents except Antarctica.
They can be found on farms, in deserts, grasslands, and mountains.
Their hooves are perfectly adapted to the dry and firm ground of the steppe.
Donkeys are herbivores, which means they only eat plants.
They like to eat grass, hay, shrubs, and leaves.
They can survive on dry, rough plants that other animals don't usually eat.
Donkeys make a loud sound called a bray that sounds like hee-haw.
They use this sound to talk to other donkeys, and they may bray when they feel lonely, hungry, upset, or to warn about danger.
Donkeys have great memories and can remember places, people, and other animals even after many years.
Some people think donkeys are stubborn, but they're actually very smart and careful.
They don't like to do anything unsafe, so they stop and think before moving.
Donkeys can live up to 30 to 50 years if they are cared for properly.
Donkeys are social animals and like to live in groups called herds.
They don't form big herds like horses, but they love spending time with their friends.
Donkeys show they care by grooming each other and gently nibbling on each other.
They form close friendships and can get very sad if a friend is taken away.
Donkeys were domesticated over 5,000 years ago.
They come from the African wild ass and were first tamed by people in Africa.
Humans trained donkeys to carry goods, pull carts, and help on farms.
When a male donkey and a female horse have a baby, it's called a mule.
Mules are very strong and can carry heavy loads.
If a male horse and a female donkey have a baby, it's called a hinny.
Hinnies are less common.
Donkeys are such amazing animals, smart, strong, and kind.
