Relive Freddy Schott's final nine holes at Royal GC on Sunday's Back 9, presented by Nexo, as he claimed his first DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion, defeating Patrick Reed and Calum Hill in aThrilling three-man playoff in Bahrain.
Well, he can hit it over the green here.
Not there, using the contours.
There's a little cushion over there
up that left-hand side.
That's an excellent leave.
What touch from Freddie's shot
to get to 18 under par, which he does.
He could do with the ball finishing centre or right,
not left.
That is not going to be the angle for the flagstick.
Not much green to work with if he goes at this flag.
Going the high route.
This is all or nothing here if he's taking it on line.
And that's a little naive if you ask me.
Well, I'm sorry, the tee shot was not in the right place.
The choice of second shot and its direction was a poor one.
He'll learn for that in the future,
but it's a painful lesson.
The good shot was 30 feet into the middle of the green
and take your two putt.
There's a big, big moment for Freddie's shot.
And that's going to be a double bogey out of nothing.
Here goes Sandy. He'll back it up too much.
He spins it a hell of a lot. Green faces him.
Fantastic reaction to the troubles of the prior hole.
Can he bounce back quickly?
Well, that's terrific. Take my heart off to him.
That is really good work. Excellent, too.
Well, the picture is clear. 13 and 14, you attack.
Then you've got choices, don't you?
And like we've discussed, you know, the error that he made.
Oh, that's lovely.
Ship officially righted.
Yeah, it's where we've seen most putts from that area finish up.
They're missing them just high.
Patrick Reid actually did miss it low,
but I think he pulled his.
But that'll be a nice birdie back to back after the double.
He can take it in a fair way on.
It's going down the left side.
He'll be washing sand out of his main there
for the next 24 hours.
Oh, he's lost it.
He's lost it. Has he dragged it?
Hopefully he hasn't dragged it.
No, it's out the other way, which means it won't go too long.
Steady now.
Well, up to the challenge.
This time, Freddy Schott launched.
There was no holding back on that one for Freddy Schott.
Oh, he's at that into next week.
Will he keep the hammer down?
That's a good swing.
That is a good, good swing.
Where has this guy been in the last couple of years?
Lacking a little boldness on that attempt.
Looks like it needs to go a bit.
Get through this middle section and it's not going to.
It's a shame because it's a lovely shot right on line.
Excellent pace once more,
being really good with those on the greens today.
Not easy to do when the blood is coursing through your veins.
That's a two arm from Hill.
Sorry about that.
Humans are playing tricks on me.
Like I said, up to the opticians I go.
Your eyes are bad, Joey.
That was a five wood.
Less driver, obviously, for Freddy,
and he's absolutely mullered it.
He will have spin problems.
He's done the same thing.
Yeah, not bad either.
Now, this for bogey for Schott, by no means in yet.
Well, well hold, well hold.
One back.
Launched it.
Everyone thinks it's easy to win at this game.
That that Callum Hill there,
that last couple of minutes was it was sheer torture for him.
He just didn't want to pull the trigger.
He's done the same.
Not as dramatic, but.
That's a tricky putt and all.
That's great, but really well done.
Fair play.
Well done.
Well done, Freddy Schott.
Going short or bust.
That's perfect.
Here we go.
OK, understandable.
Understandable.
That means it is a must make for Patrick Reid.
Oh, it's not right, is it?
Hang on.
Right down the middle, isn't it?
Oh, I was just pulling your leg.
Yeah, they normally get so steep on them,
you wouldn't think it'd be too much of a problem.
Middle of the green again, is it?
Going straight at it.
Oh, well.
And he has been a great watch.
He's taken everything to the golf course
with every single, pardon the pun, shot.
That's all he needs to do.
No dramas now.
I think this will be the first of many, personally.
What an impressive player he is.
Well, it looks as though it's been conceded.
Not sure I've ever seen that before.
But it does mean that Freddie takes his shot in Bahrain.
He gets his breakthrough victory on the DP World Tour
here at the Babco Energies Bahrain Championship.
A realisation now, just sinking in.
What a great moment.
Close to tears.
Him and his caddy, they've worked hard this week.
You work hard around this golf course.
Freddie, congratulations.
You have done it.
Your maiden title on the DP World Tour
comes here at the Babco Energies Bahrain Championship.
Just sum up what this one feels like.
I have no idea.
It's just amazing.
I didn't realise anything at all yet.
I'm just extremely happy, surprised.
I don't know what's happening right now.
I'm just so happy.
Look, you played some fearless golf, didn't you?
You didn't make it easier for yourself at times.
You had some ups and downs, but you remained confident throughout.
So just how proud are you of your resilience and your mental strength
to really keep you in it and get over the line for the first time?
Yeah, I'm very, very proud of that.
I mean, I got one of the best guys on tour on my back, so that helps.
And yeah, I'll just try whenever there was a little bit of backfire
to just stay in the moment and execute the shots as good as I can.
And that's what happened.
So yeah, I'm just speechless.
And staring down a major champion in the process, in the first playoff,
that must have been the icing on the cake.
Oh, yes, yes.
I mean, in my opinion, I could have done it the regular way.
That would have also been fine.
But to do it this way feels even more special.
So I'm just glad it happened this way.
Look, you said you've really loved playing out here in Bahrain this week.
You've had really a lot of fun on the golf course, haven't you?
And it's been a grind, fair to say, on the DP World Tour for the last few years.
So what's been the difference this week?
I think the difference this week sits back a bit further.
When I secured my full card in India last year, with Taka on the back as well,
where I just felt like, OK, well, now I belong, now I've arrived.
And this has made the biggest change,
mind change for me over the last few weeks as well.
So, yeah.
And how will you and Taka be celebrating?
I have no idea. We're going to find out soon.
We look forward to it. Very well done. Very well deserved.
Well done, Freddie.
Congratulations on your first win.
I miss you like a dear.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa,
the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain,
handing over the trophy there.
And what a trophy it is too.
