New York City saw its snowiest day in years, with 11 inches falling on Central Park.
Residents and tourists alike were hit with snow, sleet, and ice over the weekend.
NTD's Sean Marshall has more.
New York City residents could be seen digging their vehicles out of the snow Monday morning,
as well as digging their way out of their own homes this morning,
as the city gets back up to speed after a heavy snowstorm.
I think it's obnoxious because it's too much and we can't get out of the house
unless we have to shovel or do anything.
But it's my first time here in three years and I kind of miss it.
So I'm planning that maybe we can do something other than shovel and just play with the kids.
Monday's school is cancelled today for students in New York City,
and more than 1,300 flights have been cancelled today
between JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International Airports.
There hasn't been this many flight cancellations in one day
since the early times of the COVID pandemic.
I think one of the key things that I've learned is just the immense amount of work
that city workers have been putting in.
Most of our attention when it comes to a storm like this is when the snow is falling,
but the only way that you can actually respond to the level of snowfall we saw
is that if you're prepared for it.
At least five deaths have been suspected due to the cold temperatures,
as the bodies were found outside since the beginning of the snowstorm,
though the cause of their deaths remain under investigation.
Our goal is for all services to be fully restored by tomorrow,
with all streets cleared, students back at school in person,
and our city back to normal, albeit with a lot of snow piled up.
The National Weather Service says the storm system is expected to drift away
from the East Coast into the Atlantic on Monday.
Although a blast of arctic air was rushing in from Canada behind it,
prolonging sub-freezing temperatures for several more days.
