What kind of dress or which dress
Hello and welcome back to my channel
My name is Maria
I'm a German teacher and your language coach
My student Ariane asked me this question last week
Maria there's one thing I don't understand
When do you say "what kind of dress" versus "which dress"
Could you please explain that to me
Of course
In this video I'll show you how to use these question words
correctly and always form accurate questions in German
Be sure to watch all the way to the end because there's an exercise waiting for you there
Are you ready Then let's get started
What are interrogative pronouns and which ones are there
The usage of these interrogative pronouns always depends on
what response one expects from one's conversation partner
What response does one expect from one's conversation partner when making a choice
A decision must be made
It's always about something
specific For example which brass
instrument do you prefer The green one or the yellow one
I need a decision from you
You're welcome to also leave a comment
telling me which brass instrument I should feature in my next video
You can decide it
How do you decline the definite article "the"
Take a look I've prepared a declension table for you
You don't need to copy this table—find it in my
free PDF with the link
directly below this video
And here are a few more suggestions for you
Which dress should I wear tonight
This classic black one or the one here with the leopard print
Which shoes should I buy The ones with the high heels
or the ones with the
cute bow I need your help
I'm waiting for your fashion tips
Please also create your own example using this question word
And what about what kind
You ask "what kind" when inquiring about a thing's property
For example what kind of wind instrument do you prefer
A tight or a loose one
What kind of dress should I wear tonight
A formal gown or a cocktail dress
You see I'm not referring to
anything specific here I'm just asking
about a type or kind One is declined like the indefinite article
You'll also find this table in my free PDF
And in the plural you simply say "what for" without an article
Why Because the indefinite article doesn't have a plural form
And one more important thing
You've already known the preposition for a long time
After "für" comes the accusative In
our case the preposition "für" does
not stand alone it is part of a
question word These words go together
Then the nominative the accusative and even the dative may follow
Only the accusative comes when the preposition stands alone
and not part of a question word
But let's look at a few examples
Nominative
What kind of sweater is it
A turtleneck
sweater Accusative
What kind of sweater should I put on
You'd better put on a warm
sweater Dative
What kind of sweater do you exercise in
A hoodie
You see it can be the nominative the accusative
or even the dative Always pay attention to the verb
The verb sein always takes the nominative case The verb anziehen takes
the accusative case And in the third
sentence we have the preposition with
And this one as everyone knows always takes the dative
Now I'll show you a sentence in which the preposition for appears
It is not part of a question word and stands alone
For example
This gift is for my colleague
For a male colleague
Here use the accusative case
Do you have an example for me
Would you like a quick exercise
Which question word fits best
But before we do this exercise I'll give you a tiny little tip
Whenever you see answer with the definite article
Then best choose the question word which
With answers using the indefinite article it's just the opposite
Here the question word what kind of always fits
Also the definite article always
comes with the indefinite article
I hope this helps you
We start with number one
Which jacket should I wear
The red one
What jacket should I wear
A winter jacket
It's really cold
Which car should we buy
The Mercedes we looked at yesterday
What car should we buy
Best to get a large family car
What sports do you like best
Winter sports
Which winter sport do you like
best Skiing
Well did you get all the sentences right
Please leave your result in the comments below this video
It wasn't that hard was it
When asking about specific things use the interrogative pronoun which
The endings are the same as those of the definite article
When asking generally about something you use the interrogative pronoun
what kind of The endings are the same as those of the indefinite article
