Oh no I think I'm sick
I'll have to see the doctor now
But what am I even saying
Hello and welcome to my YouTube channel
My name is Natalia
I'm your German teacher
Do you know this situation
You're not feeling well You have a sore throat a runny
nose and a headache and you know deep down
you should really see a doctor
But then comes the next thought
immediately What am I saying in
German Do I understand everything
And what if I say something wrong
Doctor visits can be stressful for many German language learners—not just because they're unwell but
because they suddenly find themselves needing to communicate in a language they're still mastering
must know specialized vocabulary receive many
questions and understand a great deal of information
Do you feel the same
Then I promise you if you actively engage with this video
by the end you'll know what a typical doctor's visit is like
Germany and the actual phrases you truly need to express
yourself clearly and confidently
Why am I so certain about this
Since I've been teaching German for many years
and have practiced these exact situations
with numerous learners visiting the doctor is one of the conversations we've worked on
what scares my students the most
But with the right preparation you'll quickly gain confidence
That's exactly why we're practicing this together today
In this video you'll accompany Ivana to a doctor's office
Ivana is a character from my A2 and B1 intensive course
You hear how she checks in how the conversation with the doctor
unfolds and how typical questions and answers sound in German
e one you hear very often at the doctor's in Germany
But here it's not about understanding—it's mainly about actively speaking
As in all my speaking videos you're once again actively involved We'll be
working through three rounds today so you can gain confidence step by step
In round 1 you listen to the entire dialogue and repeat your part aloud
In round 2 you'll hear only me—the medical assistant
and the doctor—so speak in Ivana's style all by yourself
So we're having a proper conversation
In round 3 we'll turn everything around
You're listening to Ivana-style and this time you're speaking as the medical assistant and doctor
That way you'll memorize this part thoroughly
This is important so you fully understand everything during your next doctor's appointment
Pay special attention to pronunciation and intonation
As always I recommend recording yourself That way you can closely
monitor your own performance and hear exactly what needs improvement
Of course I’ve also prepared a free PDF file for you this time
In this file you'll find the full dialogue essential phrases and a short exercise
You'll find the PDF link as always directly below the video in the pinned comment
Are you ready

video at any time or replay specific sections as needed

Let's go
Good morning how can I help you
Good morning I'm not feeling well
I think I have a cold
Do you have an appointment
Oh no I thought you could just drop by
Usually you'd need an appointment
but today we still have an open
consultation hour You're welcome
to wait a moment That's good to know
Thank you very much
What is your name
Ivana Kleinschmidt
Have you been here before Frau Kleinschmidt
Yes I've been here a few times
Then I just need your insurance card please
Yes of course Here it is
Thank you Please have a seat in the waiting
area again We'll call
your name shortly Got it
Good afternoon Mrs Kleinschmidt What
seems to be the problem I have a sore throat
a runny nose and a headache
Also I feel extremely tired
Do you have a fever as well
No I don't think so
That sounds like a cold
Let me take a look at your
throat Say "aaah "
Aaaaaaa Thank you You may open your mouth again
Is everything alright
Yes your throat is slightly red but that's typical for a cold
I'll quickly listen to your heart and lungs now Okay
Good Please take a deep breath in and out
Very good The heart and lungs sound
unremarkable That's reassuring to hear
Have you been under a lot of stress or slept little in recent days
Yes honestly I have
I’ve been working a lot and barely taking any breaks
You can often feel it in your body
I recommend that you rest for a few days and drink plenty of fluids
Do I get a medication too
Yes I'll prescribe you medication for your sore throat and headaches
Can I also get antibiotic
No antibiotics don't
help with a cold because
it's caused by viruses Oh I didn't know that
I thought antibiotics always worked
Many people think that but it's not true
When you have a cold it's important to give your body time and rest
I understand
I'm therefore marking you sick for three days
Three days
I thought maybe just one
Three days are better so you can truly rest
Got it
Thank you
Do you have any more questions
No that was all
Thank you for the explanation
You're welcome
Get well soon Mrs Kleinschmidt
Thank you Goodbye
Excellent that was the first round
Now we take a step further
In round two you'll see my part of the dialogue again followed by your part
But you only hear the part from the doctor and
the medical assistant That means you're now Ivana
If you'd like you can re-record your voice and compare
it to the original Take your time and pause when needed
Good morning how can I assist you
