You want to speak German more fluently
You feel like you overthink too much before speaking
Sometimes you just can't find the right words
Then you're in the right place
Because that's exactly what we're talking about today
How to effectively improve your spoken German
Using a technique that has proven highly successful in language pedagogy
own as shadowing or whispering
My name is Laura I am a certified German teacher and native speaker
And on this channel my sister and colleague
Theresa help you learn authentic living German
Just as it's actually spoken Because in
everyday life German often sounds quite different from
how it's presented in textbooks And that's exactly what we want to prepare you for
Also let's get started Let's go
Shadowing also known as whispering or imitation training is a technique
in which you actively and consciously repeat spoken language aloud
Not just the words but also the sound rhythm meaning and pauses
If you've been following us for a while or perhaps even taking one of our
online German courses you already know how much we love this technique
That way you'll learn to adopt natural speech rhythm while improving
your pronunciation and listening comprehension at the same time
This technique has been recommended in language research for
years not only for learning German but also interpreter training
And the best part is you don’t need any special prior
knowledge—just your voice your ears and a bit of patience
Why is shadowing so effective Because you're not
just passively listening but actively participating
You're training your brain your pronunciation your intonation
and at the same time developing an ear for how German sounds
You learn to speak more spontaneously as you become accustomed to common sentence patterns
Many of our course participants report to us shortly after starting that
they can respond more quickly and speak more fluently when conversing
That's exactly what we aim to achieve
Now let's move on to the exercise
Today we'll practice in five steps
I'll explain each step to you individually—take your time doing so You
can naturally repeat the individual sections as many times as you'd like
That's completely normal and even important for your learning success
The content focuses on a very everyday topic—the morning routine
and how an ordinary normal morning can look
In the first step you simply listen to the text
Also without subtitles and without voicing along
Just listen
That way you get a feel for the content tone and rhythm
I'll be honest—I'm not a morning person
but I usually get up around seven anyway
First a coffee—nothing gets done without it
While the coffee brews I'll quickly jump in the shower
Then I'll get dressed and slowly get ready
I usually just have a piece of toast or some yogurt Meanwhile I listen
to music or scroll through news That
’s how I gradually ease into the day
In the second step you hear the text again this time with
subtitles Now you can follow
along and understand the meaning
Pay close attention to how the sentences are structured
This will help you later when you'repeating them aloud
Next I’ll show you a few things that are very typical of everyday speech
I'll be honest—I'm not a morning person
Still I usually get up around seven First a
cup of coffee—nothing gets done without it
While the coffee brews I quickly hop in the
shower Then I get dressed and slowly get ready
I usually just have a piece of toast or some yogurt Meanwhile I listen
to music or scroll through news That
’s how I gradually ease into the day
Let's now briefly examine what is typical of spoken language
in this text You may have noticed that some words are shortened
Just how we actually speak in everyday
life For instance a toast instead of
a toast Or I jump instead of I jump
This isn't a mistake—quite the opposite
That's ordinary spoken language
So in the first person singular we often drop the E ending
And then there are
the fixed expressions—so-called chunks
For example "I'll be honest "
or "Nothing works without it "
You're not ready for the day without coffee
I'm getting ready too
That means I'm getting dressed
I'm getting ready
You should learn all these expressions as whole units
Not word for word but as chunks as building blocks you can immediately put to use
In the third step you'll now take action
You will now hear each sentence individually and repeat it out loud
Pay special attention to intonation pauses and the language's
characteristic melody It's important to speak out loud and clearly
Repeat as many times as needed whenever you feel it's not quite working yet
I'll be completely honest—I'm not a morning person
Still I usually get up around seven
First things first a coffee—without it nothing gets done
While the coffee's brewing I'll quickly hop in the shower
Then I'll get dressed and slowly get ready
Most often I just have a piece of toast or some yogurt
By the way I listen to music or scroll through news
That's how I gradually ease into the day
Now let's move on to the fourth step
You will now listen to the entire text again in one continuous passage and speak along with it
It doesn't have to be perfectly in sync yet—just go at your own pace
Feel free to pause whenever you'd like
It's not about speed it's about feeling safe
I'll be completely honest—I'm not a morning
person Still I usually get up around seven
First a coffee—without it nothing gets done While
the coffee brews I'll quickly jump in the shower
Then I'll get dressed and slowly get ready
Mostly I just have a piece of toast or some yogurt
Meanwhile I listen to music or scroll through news
That’s how I gradually ease into the day
And in the fifth step you now begin the actual shadowing
—that means you speak at the same time as the speaker
Also simultaneously with me now at the original tempo
And that doesn't have to be perfect yet
What matters is that you focus on the sound
On the rhythm and just going along with it
I'll be honest—I'm not a morning person
Still I usually get up around seven
First a coffee—without it nothing gets done While
the coffee brews I'll quickly jump in the shower
Then I'll get dressed and slowly get ready Most of
the time I just have a piece of toast or a yogurt
By the way I listen to music or scroll
through news helping me ease into the day
Do this exercise several times preferably even daily
As mentioned it doesn't have to work the first time
Repetition is key when speaking The more you
participate the more natural your German will sound
