I love you. Welcome back to the show.
It's always great to see you.
It's so great to see you.
And I want to say happy birthday, Amir.
Yeah, Questlove's birthday.
There you go. Come on.
We're so lucky to have you in our world.
Yes, we are.
Oh, that's very nice.
We're lucky to have you in our world.
Thank you.
You're busy, busy, busy.
It's busy.
Producing and starring in this new film
I saw over the summer, by the way, went viral
because you were on stage with Role Model.
Yes.
You were Sally.
I was Sally in Role Model's
Madison Square Garden concert
because we were making a movie together.
He's an actor as well.
Tucker Pillsbury is his actor name.
Tucker Pillsbury?
Yes.
That's fantastic.
That's Role Model's name.
Yes.
So he was doing a show at MSG.
But you came out and surprised everybody.
Were you nervous?
I was so scared.
Like, that's crazy that people do that.
It is, right?
I mean, you all do that.
Get up in front of that many people.
It's insane.
But you had to dance.
But it went viral.
Everyone loved it.
I wore it.
My son, my 14-year-old, started a clothing line
called Levante.
Of course he did.
And thank you.
I'm very proud of him.
Come on.
That's gold right there.
Congratulations.
And so he really just did it all on his own.
And so I wore one of his shirts on stage.
So I just kind of felt like a banner for him.
It was very exciting.
We actually have a clip.
Take a look.
Come on.
That's fun.
Thanks.
That's how you do it.
Thank you.
The Oscar nominations come out tomorrow.
And I know you've won an Oscar.
Yeah.
That's...
Very lucky.
Yeah, here you are holding the Oscar.
What do you remember about Oscar night?
Well, I was pregnant, as you see, with my son,
who's now 14.
Wow.
And everyone thought...
You've been showing him off since...
Yeah, basically since he was in utero.
But everyone thought I was going to, like,
give birth on stage.
And I was, like, four months pregnant.
I was like, I'm just real short.
I'm not even halfway done.
I'm like, short girls show real fast.
Yeah.
Is it tough in heels when you're...
It's scary.
You think you're going to, like, fall on your face.
Right?
Yeah.
Yeah, but you didn't, though.
I did it.
You crushed it, yeah.
Thanks.
That's nice.
You've been acting professionally since you were 12,
I want to say?
Yeah.
I did the professional...
I actually turned 12 while I was shooting that movie.
Really?
Here in New York City, yeah.
But I was shocked to find out your superlative
in your yearbook had nothing to do with acting.
Can you tell everyone what your superlative was?
It's really embarrassing, though.
I like...
Makes you laugh.
Well, I was already an actress in high school.
Yes.
And, like, there were superlatives, like,
most likely to win an Oscar, most likely...
Not for you.
I did not get those.
No.
I got most likely to be on Jeopardy!
There you go!
That's what I'm...
I was, like, such a dork.
I was, like, known for...
I always had, like, a whiteout on my hands
and I had, like, a really big backpack.
No!
You're really into it.
Have you ever been asked to be on Jeopardy!
I was.
I was asked to be on, like, you know,
like, celebrity Jeopardy!
And I was very...
Yeah.
Have you ever done it?
Are you kidding me?
No.
Wheel of Fortune, maybe.
That's more my speed.
Sorry.
I worked my way up.
No, I think you start with Madison Square Garden,
then you do Jeopardy!
Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's the obvious trajectory.
That's the obvious trajectory, yeah.
In addition to acting,
you've become a powerhouse producer.
Congratulations.
You're about to...
Arco is the animated film we're going to talk about.
But also, you're about to go to Sundance Film Festival.
Yes.
Tell me about this one.
So, Arco is the animated film
that's going to be out in theaters this week.
Yeah.
Which is so beautiful.
It's crazy.
I'm so proud of it.
Yeah, what a great look.
First-time director, all hand-drawn.
Beautiful look to it.
Super inspiring and adventurous for kids.
What's the Sundance film?
The Sundance film is called The Gallerist.
It's a movie by Cathy Yan,
and I play a gallerist in it.
It's kind of an art world satire.
Yeah.
And it's an amazing cast,
and I'm really, really excited about it.
Well, there's a great cast in Arco, by the way.
Yes.
The voices in Arco.
Yes.
It's everybody.
So, we got Will Ferrell.
Come on.
Which is like...
Come on.
He's the best.
I mean, America Ferrera.
I love her, too.
The greatest.
Andy Samberg.
That's all I need.
Ruffalo.
Oh, of course!
Throw in a little Ruffalo in there.
And Flea.
Yes!
By the way, have you heard Flea's new jazz album?
No.
Have you heard that?
Flea's new jazz album?
Ooh.
I'll check it out.
Secret sauce.
I'll check that out.
Secret sauce.
Yeah, it's going to be really good.
It's been nominated for all sorts of awards.
I'm just going to read through a couple.
It was nominated for Best Animated Feature
at the Critics' Choice Awards.
Come on.
It was nominated for Best Animated Motion Picture
at the Golden Globe Awards.
It won Best Animated Feature at the National Board of Review Awards.
Come on, now.
Natalie Portman.
And you and Mark are getting rave reviews, as well.
How do we sum up what the film's kind of about?
I love the theme of it and the idea of it.
So there's a boy, Arco, who steals his sister's time travel cape.
He lives in the future.
And he time travels to his past, which is also our future,
and meets a girl there named Iris.
And together, they kind of learn how to imagine
a different way of the world being.
It's so good.
It's very beautiful.
I'm very proud of it.
And I feel like I can say it because I'm the mere producer.
The director is incredible.
It's his first movie.
Yeah.
Who was the director?
His name's Hugo Bienvenu.
And he's a young French filmmaker.
And what drew you to this film?
The first time he showed me the animatic,
which was so beautiful.
The style is so stunning.
I don't know how to compare it.
And he said to me, it's about a memory of the future.
That's so cool.
I'm getting a tattoo.
Hello.
Yes.
But where?
It could be, of course, my abs.
That's where all the good ones go, man.
Best place.
Everyone's looking at the beach, man.
I want to show a clip.
Here's a scene from Natalie Portman's Arco.
Take a look.
Calm down.
It won't hurt you.
It's Mickey.
It took care of you.
What's your name?
Arco.
Arco what?
Arco Durell.
You don't exist.
But Mickey, he's right here.
You do not exist.
You don't exist.
Mickey, what's the matter with you?
You do not exist.
Mickey, are you there?
Whoa.
He made a crash.
Is it dead?
Of course not.
Robots don't die.
Oh, come on now.
Natalie Portman, everybody!
New York and LA this Friday.
And in theaters everywhere January 30th.
Natalie and I are doing something fun after the break.
Stick around, everybody!
