Federal authorities are increasing efforts to identify and combat potential threats during this year's America 250 celebrations.
But we begin this half hour with an increased effort to identify and combat potential threats during this year's America 250 celebration.
An internal law enforcement memo identifies Philadelphia as a possible soft target this summer.
Yeah, the National Counterterrorism Center says our city is of interest to those wanting to cause violence
because of the many, many significant events we're hosting this year.
Let's go out live to Action News reporter Maggie Kent who spoke to a security expert today
about those concerns and what's being done. Maggie?
Well, Brian, Sarah, I can tell you this security expert says to look at this memo as a good thing.
It means that our agencies are paying attention, they're focused, and they're ready to go for whatever may happen.
It also means they're using all the technology on hand to ensure that something doesn't.
Philadelphia is preparing for an epic summer season and an influx of visitors to the city.
So are security agencies.
Do we expect there's a high probability that we'll be attacked? Not necessarily.
It's just good intel. It's just good practice. It's hygienic.
We sat down with Jack Thomas Tomarchio, former principal deputy of Homeland Security under Intelligence, to talk safety.
After the release of a memo in which the National Counterterrorism Center has identified Philadelphia as a possible location of interest for those looking to do harm.
Writing in part, for example, on 4th of July 2026, Philadelphia will host celebrations showcasing its historic role in U.S.
independence, as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup match and an associated FIFA fan festival, which is expected to draw more than 15000 fans.
Saying these crowds could become soft targets for terrorism.
Not surprised that it would come out with regard to the events for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
Tomarchio says everything from low tech safety measures like trash trucks blocking streets to the latest digital intelligence will be deployed.
It's very easy to to to watch a site.
Now, they'll be putting more security cameras up around Independence Mall, around the Liberty Bell, around Carpenters Hall.
They're also going to have databases of individuals that they know might have some affinity to this.
And they're going to find out where these people are.
Yeah, they're going to use all the technology available to them.
And of course, it's an all hands on deck situation.
Tomarchio said this doesn't mean don't go out to that event that you've been looking forward to.
It does mean use the rules that you always carry with you.
Look around, pay attention.
And if you see something, say something.
We're live along the Parkway.

Guys, it's going to take all of us to keep aware.
Maggie, thank you.
