Mozart's sextet “Ein musikalischer Spaß” (A Musical Joke), KV 522, was composed in 1787. The reason for its composition and the date of its first performance are unknown. The nicknames “Village Musicians' Sextet” and “Peasant Symphony,” which the piece acquired after the composer's death, are somewhat misleading, because although the performers themselves are also the target of the crude humor, it is primarily aimed at amateur composers who lack both technical skill and imagination, and of whom Mozart certainly knew many.
The instrumentation requires strings (2 violins, viola, bass) and two horns. There is some evidence to suggest that the piece was intended as a parody of a symphony and that the strings should therefore be played in chorus.
The video was captured by Christian Schlegel in Jaun, Switzerland and was edited by Wenjing Ma.
