The world remembers Him only through legend—a reed that defied the raging waves
Nine years have passed since I sat in silent stillness gazing at the stone wall of Shaolin Temple
Yet few know that before becoming a master He was once a noble prince
Today let us journey back to the distant Western origins of Master Bodhidharma
In the Southern Kingdom of Fragrant Wisdom golden sunlight blazed everywhere
This country is renowned for its wealth boasting rich deposits of precious stones and fragrant spices
King Huong Chi was a devout follower of the Dharma constantly using his wealth to support and provide for Buddhist monks
Out of deep reverence the king ordered the construction of a trap tower to capture a tiger
Towering proudly against the blue sky inlaid with mother-of-pearl carnelian and pearls
Today is the silent celebration with drums and trumpets echoing throughout the land
People from all around flocked to admire the magnificent royal construction
The king stood atop the elevated platform his eyes shining with immense pride
Standing beside him were three princely sons each striking in their own dignified way
The crown prince stepped forward loudly boasting about his efforts in overseeing the project
The second prince was no less impressive solemnly recounting the selection of the precious gem
They争抢着将功劳归于自己 hoping to earn their father king's praise in front of the people
The third prince named Bodhala stood silently in a corner
He did not look at the dazzling tower but down at the impoverished people below
His gaze was filled with sorrow as though he truly understood the pain hidden beneath the facade of grandeur
Today's distinguished guest is the venerable Master Dharma a revered Buddhist scholar
The guard advanced slowly carefully studying the expressions of the three men
Nhài paid no mind to the boastful chatter of her two older brothers
Yet her gaze lingered long upon the Australian prince standing in quiet contemplation
Nhài saw a rebellious aura hidden within this person
Vù Hương Chí respectfully invited the ancestral master into the inner hall to discuss the teachings
The three princes were also ordered to accompany them in order to converse with the revered monk
The palace doors closed behind her leaving the festival's clamor in the distance
Inside the space was cool and serene the faint scent of sandalwood drifting through the air
This is the very place where the fateful challenge that will alter history is about to take place
The king sent someone out with a box inlaid with incredibly intricate carvings
As soon as the box lid opened a blinding flash of light flooded the entire room
It is the priceless Ming Chu the nation's treasured relic of the Xiang Chi Dynasty
The king respectfully led the people of Yuan Yu to offer sacrifices to the ancestral master invoking the Three Jewels as witnesses
The group of Prajna held the Jade Gem in their hands its light reflecting off the master's face
He smiled gently at the three princes then spoke his first question
This jewel is perfectly round and brilliantly radiant—what in this world could possibly compare
The crown prince replied promptly his tone brimming with confidence and pride
Venerable sir this is my father's treasure—naturally unmatched by anything else
Only its own light is worthy enough to shine within this palace of Nguy Nga
The second prince quickly joined in to win his father's favor and that of the elders
A treasure of rare worth in this world only one of your noble character could truly deserve it
The king hearing his children speak thus nodded in satisfied approval stroking his beard with a contented smile
The hundred-year-old master still wore his enigmatic smile then turned to look at the third prince
And what about you Bodhila How do you feel about this gem
Bodhidalā stepped forth into the hall his presence majestic and dignified like that of a lion
He stared straight into the gem then into the eyes of the clan leader his voice ringing out sharp and resolute
Venerable sir this gem is a worldly gem if it has form it will eventually perish
This light is physical light it cannot illuminate itself
Those who wish to see the jade must rely on light yet the jade itself is unaware that it is shining
Only the radiant wisdom of one's own true mind is the eternal light
A clear mind illuminates all things shining on its own without reliance on anyone never dimming or fading
Hearing those words the entire palace fell silent the king stunned by his son's boldness
The two older brothers looked at each other bewildered unable to understand what their younger sibling was saying
Team Bách Nha continued asking using it to gauge the depth of this wisdom
Among all things referred to as treasures what truly holds the highest value
The prince replied without hesitation Among
treasures spiritual relics are supreme
He then asked again among all things of light what is the brightest in the world
He replied that among all forms of light the light of wisdom is the brightest
Team Baiya laughed heartily in reverse knowing the seed of the Dharma had sprouted green
He knew this was the one who would carry forward the true Dharma even further
But the moment had not yet come so he still had to remain in the imperial palace to settle the debts of his past life
The festival ended and everyone went home
Yet the prince's heart was in turmoil
In the days that followed he often sat in silent contemplation indifferent to feasts and festivities
He looked at the fortress walls and felt as though they were imprisoning his soul
The body lies amidst the mud yet the mind is turned toward liberation
As time passed the king grew increasingly frail his health steadily declining
The atmosphere in the palace grew heavy anxiety plainly visible on everyone's faces
The finest physicians were summoned but fate is something no one can defy
The king lay on his sturdy bed his breath faint his clouded eyes fixed on his children
Then on a night of raging storms and violent winds the death knell rang out across the entire imperial palace
The late king left behind a profound sorrow that enveloped the entire palace
The wailing tore through the earth flags hung limp and lifeless white covering every path ahead
While everyone was weeping the two older brothers were secretly scheming
They feared losing power so they hastily began discussing the division of wealth and the throne
Suspicious glances exchanged whispered schemes hatching in the shadows
Bodhidharma witnessing that scene grew even more disillusioned with the fickle nature of life
He meditated beside his father's coffin for seven days and nights without eating or sleeping
In the flickering candlelight he contemplated the impermanence of human life
Only yesterday the king was a mighty fearsome ruler yet now he is but a cold corpse
That golden treasure such a precious thing—when death comes it can't be taken along
Only karmic force and consciousness continue to drift endlessly through the cycle of suffering
He realized that if he stayed here fighting for dominance he'd end up just like the others—wrecked and broken
The decision had been made—sharp and resolute like a swift stroke of a keen blade
After the completion ceremony Bodhala quietly returned to his private chamber
He removed the crown took off all the golden jewelry and placed them on the wooden table
What once was the pride of the royal family now seems mere dust to him
He draped himself in a simple cloak and stepped barefoot out of the palace gate
Night shrouded the path yet within his heart a light flared to guide the way
He went straight into the forest of Thila where the Bát Nhã hermitage was built among grass huts for meditation
The forest at night was shrouded in silence broken only by the distant chirping of crickets and the rustling of wind through the trees
The group of wisdom was meditating as if already knowing the young man would come
Bodhidharma knelt before his master bowing his head to the ground with the utmost sincerity
The old man opened his eyes and spoke in a deep warm voice that echoed through the quiet night
The noble prince of lofty rank and great dignity ventured deep into the forest at the dead of night in search of what
He looked up with a determined gaze and replied I wish to seek the Dharma to extinguish suffering
I wish to find the path to liberation from the cycle of birth and death not to become a king of this world
The sect leader laughed bitterly saying the prince was already dead—now before me there is only a beggar seeking salvation
To attain the highest spiritual path one must endure discomfort and undertake tasks that are difficult
Could the child accept abandoning his fate to live as a wandering knight
Bodhira bowed once more dedicating his life's efforts to the Buddha's teachings
The group nodded in agreement and promised to perform the ordination ceremony for him tomorrow morning
The dawn had just broken and the first rays of sunlight pierced through the canopy of the ancient trees
The forest glowed in the morning mist birds singing joyfully to welcome the new day
Beneath the bodhi tree the hair-cutting ceremony took place in a solemn atmosphere
Each jet-black lock of his hair fell to the ground severing all worldly worries
Each cut was a release from the burden of fame and power
His face revealed delicate features his eyes shining with a serene light
The group of wisdom bestowed upon him a faded orange robe and an earthenware bowl
From now on you will no longer be the prince of Bodhi Dala in this kingdom
We gave our child the dharma name Bodhi Damo meaning one who attains understanding of the teachings
Bodhidharma respectfully accepted the Dharma name his heart brimming with indescribable joy
He draped the robe over himself feeling infinitely lighter than if he’d worn the imperial dragon robe
From then on Daruma studied under the monk begging for food each day and meditating every night
He served his teacher with utmost care and diligence never shirking even the most arduous tasks
His wisdom grew ever clearer penetrating deeply into the profound meanings of the scriptures
Many years passed and Daruma became the esteemed right-hand disciple of Master Prajna
This enabled the teacher to transform sentient beings and defeat numerous non-Buddhist scholars in scriptural debates
His reputation spread far and wide across India yet he remained committed to a life of simplicity
Then one day the Eightfold Path felt its strength gradually fading away
Knowing his passing was near he summoned Bodhidharma to his side for final instructions
Bodhidharma knelt beside the sickbed taking hold of his beloved master's frail hand
He asked the master "After you are gone in which direction should I go to carry out my teachings "
The Bodhisattva Baizhao gazed at Da Mo with a look of deep affection his breath faint yet unmistakably present
The master said that the timing isn't right yet so you should stay in India a little longer
Sixty-seven years after I am gone go eastward to the land of China
There is Mahayana Buddhism there but people are merely following the outward practices
They built temples and cast countless statues yet forgot to illuminate their own hearts
My child go there and transmit the spiritual seal carrying forward the light of the true Dharma to save all sentient beings
But remember well what I tell you: the roads of the East are distant and treacherous fraught with hardship
My child will encounter people who fail to understand them and may even be harmed to the point of losing their life
Bodhidharma cherished in his heart the final teachings of his master etching them deeply into his being
The enlightened master smiled serenely then gently closed his eyes and entered nirvana
After arranging the funeral rites for his master Bodhidharma remained in India to further propagate the Dharma
He patiently waited for the right moment for the appointed time when the prophesied messenger would arrive
Time passed like a shuttlecock flicking through a window and suddenly it was already 67 years
At this point Bodhidharma was an old monk his beard and hair thick and wild his frame weathered by years of hardship and wind
He knew it was time to set out on the sacred mission of his life
He walked to the seaside where massive waves crashed relentlessly against the cliffs
The sea wind blew fiercely whipping the flowing sleeves of the robe yet he stood rigid and furious unmoved as a mountain
Her eyes soft yet piercing gazed intently toward the distant horizon toward the mysterious east
Ahead lies the vast endless sea—a three-year journey filled with peril and challenge
Ahead lie unprecedented challenges confrontations of ideology and faith
Yet in his heart there was not the slightest fear—only boundless infinite compassion
He stepped onto the small boat leaving his homeland and glorious past behind
The boat gradually drifted away from the shore becoming a tiny speck in the vast ocean
Storms on the horizon began to rise signaling a new chapter filled with turmoil
How will our founding ancestor endure the trials of such days
How would the fateful meeting with Emperor Liang Wu Di unfold in the land of hardship
All those mysteries still await you beyond the ocean
What will the eastward journey look like
