What does a full day on a small farm actually look like?
In this video, we take you through an entire day and night at 10 Acre Woods, from morning feed to evening chores. We break down who does what, how our routines change with the seasons, and answer one of the most common questions we get:
You’ll see:
- Morning and night feeding routines
- Goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits & ponies
- Winter farm systems and heated water solutions
- How routine saves time and energy
- Behind-the-scenes of filming and editing farm videos
- Real talk about balancing farm life with a full-time job
- This is real farm life, unfiltered — not a highlight reel.
If you enjoy farm vlogs, homesteading, animal rescue, routine-based living, or slow living content, this one’s for you.

You ever find that right spot that feels good and you just keep scratching?
Mark and Tara here and welcome to the 10-acre woods. So today we're going to do an in the day
of a life. In the day of a life? A life of the in the day. A night. And that well the day.
We're going to do a full day here on the farm. We've had comments before and one just recently
asking what does Mark do? What does Mark do? Does he just hold the camera? We've had comments like
that before. Mark making the girls do all the work and things like that. Mark does whatever
he's asked to do. So what happens here is Tara does the morning feed and the morning feed consists
of of course doing the waters which she's doing here and then feeding all the animals the grains
and the hay and cuts up the vegetables and does that. And then Tiana our daughter who by the way
is turning 25 on Monday. So we're going out for dinner on Monday for her quarter century sushi.
Yes she Tara doesn't care for sushi. But to each their own she her meal is fries and chicken
fingers. She's a fries and chicken fingers girl. So Tiana does the feeding the night feeding which
we're going to see a little bit later on in the video. And that consists of the grains the water
and the hay. But she doesn't usually do the vegetables. I do all the veggies. Yeah so Tara
does the veggies in the morning. So with me I'm kind of maintenance. You know the jack of all
trades. You're also gone Monday to Friday. Yes so the girls here work on the farm and then of
course I have my nine to five job. I am a hazardous materials inspector for a private company.
So I go out in businesses and homes and look at things like mold growth and asbestos. Which is why
our barn is the way it is. Yeah yeah. So I've taken some of that and put that into of course
home here. And our barn is built in such a way with good air movement low temperature but also
low humidity. So you know taking that from from my work experience and bringing it home.
We specialize in mold and asbestos abatement. Mark McKean's company Breathe Easy Eco Solutions
provides asbestos remediation services across Manitoba. He says the Asbestos Hazard Emergency
Response Act was implemented in BC in 2024. Manitoba will follow the BC model. It's a more
stringent course. It goes over risk assessments and condition of asbestos and what to do. So it's
something that we looked at back in 2019 in hopes that Manitoba would start to tighten up the
regulations which it looks like they are now starting to do. McKean says while many of the
most serious asbestos exposures happened years or even decades ago. The new regulations ensure
that work happening today won't lead to deaths and illnesses in the future. So the girls do their
thing during the week. Of course during the winter months it's cold outside and and we we do different
things of course in the winter than we do in the summer. In the summer we do projects. We build
things. We built this structure here. We extended the horse structure out this year. Well last year
and then next this year we're already in 2026. This year this summer once it warms up we're going
to continue on our orchard build in the back woods there. So cutting down some trees. We're going to
be getting a stump grinder to get all those stumps down and prepping the area for an orchard.
We're also going to do some small builds like some small kind of mini cabin builds.
We're planning on having a reunion this August so we need some extra space as well. Plus it'll
be a fun build and who knows maybe we'll get into some bed and breakfast kind of
camping out at the Ten Acre Woods. Who knows? We've kind of thought about a few different ideas
but in the winter time once we're done the feeding and everything we do a little bit of stuff inside
but mostly we do inside terra nits and we'll go in and do that. Did you already do the birds?
I did. Oh okay well that was easy. I guess I'm just talking too much.
Good morning. Oh what's going on? Good morning.
Yes cockle do do to you too. Morning kids. So the kids got into and we should have known this
on that little stand we built there was some pool noodles on you know as a cushion
one on each side and Tiana when she came out the other night noticed that they were chewing it
so we took that off we should have known goats chew it was just a matter of time
so all right so we start off um cleaning out the stall this this it doesn't take long people
think that we're at this all day uh Tara coming out she's out here maybe an hour hour and a half
yeah depending on uh depending on what needs to be done maybe she'll hang out here a little bit
longer and you know do do some little uh do some little things out here
do a little extra cleaning or do some organizing and sorting and things of that nature
but um a lot of people think oh wow how do you find the time it's routine it's routine right
organization yeah and then it works smoothly yeah so coming up with a routine and a system
that works uh she's been you know we brought these two in here a couple weeks ago
and it's taken a couple weeks to come up with a routine on how to do it and
you know the cleanup so of course we didn't start out with the uh the feed trough and that was
something we thought okay well they're just making a mess we throw it on the ground uh it's getting
mixed up with with everything else uh let's put that in there it's contained and then she can
throw some um bedding material some loose stuff in to collect any of the moisture and to make it
easier for the cleanup there you go kids all right so hey for them uh there's some apples
here that tara just threw in we're probably going to get these guys some melons
and tara's doing her cutting up of veggies so what do we got we still got a good stock
yeah the cantaloupe um the chickens are going through like they're eating the seeds which is
the best yeah yeah and then i'm cutting up that you don't want to miss the bucket
um these pears are so good they're so sweet yeah i had one the other night i had an apple in a pear
so uh yeah so tara's getting that all ready what we'll do is we'll uh we've still got lots of
melons here that we give to the uh the birds mainly we do we do give some to the animals as well
so these guys are having that they've got peas in here which we
soak the peas so that they are more easily digestible and these guys are a little bit
slower they're a little bit smaller so these are sarama chickens and we got sriracha here
which the reason why he's separate is because well sometimes they just get into fights it's
fine if it's outside uh but inside in a more enclosed area you know if you don't like your
roommates there's gonna be some arguments right i can't hear you with all the crowing going on
what's that what does barry need oh what does barry need oh well barry gets his uh
he needs everything that pumpkin well just a piece of pumpkin left that's it
yeah i think that was the cantaloupe it's pretty much done a lot of pumpkin seeds so he's actually
not eating the pumpkin seeds well he's had yeah so yeah no barry needs uh got a little bit of
lettuce that came out here barry come on there you go he's like yes yes some lettuce i need lettuce
so it is important with the rabbits they don't get uh like you heard mark say lettuce they shouldn't
actually have an abundance of lettuce and whatnot like on iceberg a balanced diet yeah iceberg
versus romaine i've always thought romaine is a better lettuce whereas iceberg is just uh
leafy water yeah they need the fiber and whatnot that goes with the the feed and and hay and that
natural like plant but his size he's quite good at choosing what he uh
needs and wants uh just keep an eye on their poops if they have runny poops then you're giving them
too much um and animals are pretty good that way you give them a variety just like just like humans
they're gonna they're gonna have what they like i mean that wasn't huge pumpkin he's working on it
yeah yeah oh yeah look at him go he's like yes and he'll have some of that then he'll switch up
and he'll have a second course which will maybe be the apple but but yeah watching
any animal's poop is going to tell you you know if you've got uh a diarrhea then there's something
usually there's something wrong in their diet so finding out that combination that works best
yeah get off the water
trying to give you variety they like their hay
yeah certain certain animals just have their preferences like humans
some will um wait for the hay and in here we find mainly it well Sheldon just waits for everything
but mainly in here we find the sheep so we've got Tucker and Onyx here and then Nestor back there
you can see they're just kind of standing around oh no yeah so that's uh some grains
okay
Charlie of course likes the likes the veggies he kind of starts with that and then goes into the
grains and then his final is hay so we watch the sheep again Nestor is just kind of standing there
licking his lips Tucker's just kind of looking around and looking at the door oh okay so the
sheep are more hay driven at least these ones on this side and some of the goats you can see
Coco on the other side Charlie switched beds again
so now Onyx is making her way over to the hay and if we look here Nestor and Tucker
we're waiting for the hay so uh last week if you remember we had issues with our watering system
the heater originally went and ordered another couple heaters so we had a 500 watt heater
and we replaced it with a 250 watt heater and we were getting problems with icing up
and it seemed odd because it was fairly mild um this is the little springs uh it's the
well there's a little springs and there's a large spring the little springs a 250 watt heater
and the big spring takes a 500 watt heater so we thought why do we need the 500 watt
so we were having issues with it and it was still freezing up and I came out here to check
maybe replace the heater and try the other heater maybe it was a faulty heater
and if you I looked back in the last video and you can actually see it the plug
there was actually unplugged and just dangling from the wall so when I initially
did the replacement and put the new one in well when I disconnected it I unplugged it there
and of course unplugged it here which is the heater and then I went and plugged it back in
and it sat there unplugged at the wall that's why it wasn't working we were trying to figure out
well it should be working what's going on so you have to actually make sure it is plugged in which
it wasn't so everything has been resolved the heater does work and it works great and if you
have farm animals we highly recommend this from Gallagher Animal Management okay so but as they're
sitting there watching this I'm cleaning it out yeah the only reason that we have to clean this
out is because there's ducks in there yes that's the only reason those three right there
so normally like you don't see me clean the horse one out you don't have to clean it out it stays
clean yeah and if you don't put it in the sun it stays really clean because the sun in the summer
gets calcium the I have to clean this out because of those ducks yeah they get in there and they
like ducks are ducks are messy they get in and just play in the water and then they they go and
they stick their beaks in the side and they play in there and then they go back in the water and
they play in there so yeah ducks are uh are a challenge sometimes um so yeah so that works we
are actually thinking about getting another one for the um for the ponies up front and bringing
that one back here having one up front that's a little bit larger of a trough so um yeah so if
you're interested in these Gallagher Animal Management if you use the code 10ACREWOOD
you do get an extra 10% off your purchase so make sure that you do use the code hi charlie
good morning i need a wet wipe out here so i can wipe his nose wipe his nose
baby wipes right charlie so first morning verse night two tiana and i we talk all the time about
routine and to make it simpler for everybody and you know like quicker and and less uh
strenuous um so we also split different things so like i would clean this in the morning and do
that kind of stuff and clean the horse pen and she feeds them at night so they get cleaned out
in the morning fed at night so there's you know like you switch and we're always like what would
make things easier right yeah and of course it's quite easy in the summertime because everything's
broken we've got the pond we don't have to worry about the waters we've got these hooked up
automatically which we could in the winter time hook this up but our herd just isn't big enough
require that so you can hook it up and there's a frost free line that it comes with and you
can run it down and we'd have to put them against the building and yeah and it just
you know you got to find what works you ever find that right spot that feels good
and you just keep scratching
oh shorty
you know we put this brush in here a number of years ago just so that they can rub up against
it but i guess i guess the feed trough just works so much better okay so just one final
thing inside here we're getting the chickens some fresh melons tara's taking some shavings
and just putting down to kind of clean things up okay we're back in the house and the birthday girl
is making her smoothie and tara is uh i don't know she's oh she's doing limes yes she's cutting up
some limes to make some lime juice uh normally during the day uh tara you can find tara sitting
over here uh at the couch where coda is uh hi coda yes good morning uh and she does her knitting
so she's been you know this is part of her hibernation routine is to uh is to do knitting
well i didn't say whiteboard knitting uh you were doing what was it hats before yeah she's been
doing i did every size every color of hats and then i did those are socks socks yeah so so
underneath hats then there's socks yeah so i'm working on mitts so yeah so slippers in the
summertime we're outside doing things but um i need to get up my stock so i need one of every
size and one of every color just in case somebody wants to buy one and then a golden stock yeah so
um you know doing things like that and just doing indoor things sometimes we have uh classes
november december uh we do a lot of classes so we'll have this area here these tables and of
course the island all set up for people to do mitts and moccasin classes uh and um what else
do we do we do the mitts and moccasins we did some wool processing now we haven't we haven't
recorded a wool processing this well or last year and that actually seems to be the most popular
video on our channel it's somewhere around 900 000 views so people are really interested in that
hi ria yeah she's the talkative one where are the rest of them
nobody's over here uh this is their uh feeding and pooping station so we use uh these tubs here
nothing fancy and we use the um the wood pellets that you'd find in wood burning fireplaces
and it works really well in there what do you think yeah okay and of course tara's wall of
uh different herbs and such up here her apoca apoca theory apothecary wall and then of course
whenever we're in the kitchen toby is right there ready for cleanup so if anything should fall he is
and i get teased that he's usually around me in the kitchen
so there's lucifer down there there's zoria and of course nix i'm pretty sure
is she but no she's at the door i can see her right there
well and he was out here i did see him so here's my chair here and this is anara
good morning anara so the next stage in my day usually on the weekends is to sit down with the
computer and to pull the footage off the camera now i do i've been doing things differently this
past year than i have so some of you have commented about the quality of the video and i want to make
sure that i'm getting the best quality for you guys to see i purchased this camera a few years
ago which has a nice wide field of view which works really well in capturing all those moments
out there so what i do is i take this this is a sony alpha 7c camera so a full frame camera
and it has a tamron lens which is a really wide lens that i've selected so what i do now is i
take the footage and i bring it into a program by sony and it does image stabilization so if you
look back at some of the other videos years ago and i've done this to pull some old footage
it's really wobbly and that's one thing that i've approved on is taking from the sony camera
using the sony software it crops it in slightly and then image stabilizes it
good morning
yes talk will do the do to you too morning kids by pulling this in doing that that usually takes
about an hour to do from there then i have my stabilized footage and i bring it into perkinger
pro and then i will make my timeline and then i'll basically watch the entire video of course
making edits and stopping from time to time to maybe pull some other footage or some other images
maybe from from past videos as um as an example and you would have seen that when i talked about
the plug that we didn't plug in for the heater so i pulled footage from last week's video and kind of
showed uh yep there it is in the background you can see tara talking and and i can zoom in and
show you it's a little bit fuzzy but you get the idea anyway um yeah it was a human error
so the editing portion of it probably takes another two hours i would say because the videos
are usually about 30 minutes long so by doing that and maybe going in and getting a coffee
from the kitchen every once in a while taking a little bit of a break so i'm usually done
most of my editing by you know mid-afternoon and it depends on when i'm doing the editing
sometimes i'm like well let's film on sunday or maybe i'll do like i'm doing today i'm doing it
on saturday because i want to get the evening feed i want to finish up my edit probably tomorrow
morning and then i'll have it ready for you sunday at around six o'clock so that's kind of my setup
in here uh editing does take a little bit of time to do while i'm doing this um tiana is usually
doing her thing uh down she does some game streaming on twitch uh so she's usually downstairs
at her computer setup uh tara's usually sitting on the couch doing her knitting uh doing little
odds and ends and uh watching a little bit of tv uh just putting on youtube some of uh she's got
some of her favorite channels uh and i've got some of mine that uh we sometimes watch in the
evening so uh next thing you'll see is our evening feed with tiana okay it's now six o'clock and of
course it's really dark out so which is usually why i don't film the animal feeding in the uh
in the wintertime so tiana's here we're just heading out to do the ponies and we're going
to do the water and the uh the feeding for them so tiana tell us about your routine
so i do the horse water first um so i'll fill this up and then i'll fill the horses and then
if i have enough left over i'll go do the ducks um if not then i'll refill this um and then i do
the horse food right okay i should have brought a flashlight with me how much water you can't even
see it yeah sometimes i'll go to pour the water in and i'm like oh i need a lot of water and then
i'll go to pour it i'm like oh never mind it's really high so we've got these christmas lights
that run along the outside here and what i've done is installed some lighting in here so this
is just a bar light there's one in here hi kids and then through into the ducks which we didn't
see this morning there's another light in here there's no pigeons stuck in the top of feed bins
yes well we should actually put something over top of that we did have the feed containers in
there last year yeah there was a couple nights ago where i came out here and i looked in the top
and i just saw two kids yeah well that was just yeah that was just the other night wasn't it two
days ago yeah yeah she came in and told us yeah there was a couple pigeons because once they get
in here they can't come out but we should put we should put something over we did before we had the
the blue screw on wall units that just sat in the top last well maybe the maintenance guy can come
up with something maybe i'll do that tomorrow that'll be something on my on my list
yeah sebastian's pretty talkative
hi down here somebody else coming in we're going out we're going out yeah i should have brought a
flashlight thing i do in here have horses food because they take the longest to eat
yeah and this is something that your mom doesn't do in the morning no so this is one difference
eat your food boy dump it back up spilled their water
okay okay so you get both of them and so shorty's got his and then oh you put the other one over
here okay see look at that they know they know exactly what they're doing and then you gotta
and again you get into routine yeah scoop boats forgot to lock the door this morning
we've established that coco is looking for um hay even with hay
yeah she's very here and she likes to lick yeah i don't know his last few years she's been a
licker and i don't know why uh but yeah and then generally when i'm throwing grain out here i try
and not get it on top of the sheep yeah your mother as well but she's somehow somehow manages
to get it on the sheep and then i grab a scoop of oats for the other guys hi coco
hi what are you doing are you being needy are you being needy yeah
and then tucker's the other needy one yes all right hay is coming tucker onyx
yeah the moment you've waited for it's been how many hours and nester
you see the only other thing that you do differently is usually you do an apple for
the pigs right yeah yeah um and now i'm just gonna grab two more flakes for these guys in here
okay like this morning the three musketeers are all over that hay and of course charlie's still
yeah i have accidentally squished the ducks once oh
it was only one of them and he immediately got out from under
yeah he's right there sheldon right there and tonight we see uh the roosters of course
roosting so something we don't usually see in the morning yeah so these guys are getting ready for
once in a while i'll actually check their feet because they're not scratching around as much in
here and it's softer um so then i'll actually if their feet or their nails are longer i'll
actually clip their nails oh okay okay so that's it for out here except for the apple yes okay
which it's happened a few times mama has left the knife somewhere else and i lose it and you
have to hunt yes because she went and did the melons last this morning and the first time
i had no idea that she was bringing the knife over there so i looked and i was like i have
no idea where it is i'm looking around here because this is where it always is
and i finally just gave up i'm like they don't get an apple tonight yeah and then i went inside
and was like where did you put the knife she's like oh it's in the cantaloupe oh okay
okay so you have we have three pigs so of course there's four halves so you take uh and cut one of
them into another half yeah charlie to make a quarter and then it's the luck of the draw as to
who as to who gets this rarely happens where he doesn't realize i have an apple yeah charlie
charles sit your bum fully sit your bum
he's got to stay and he's got calm there we go here's your apple there you go sheldon do you
want a half are you do you know what it is yeah there you go okay oh good look at you
see they know their names
and then frogman is looking right at me
what was she gonna come around
yeah okay here you go and then we just have the water left um in here yeah
where are they where are they oh yeah tinker's uh taking the rest of i don't normally give her a
treat at night uh because she already gets a big enough treat in the morning hi bronwyn that's it
there's no more no more okay bronwyn is less friendly with humans but when you have a treat
she is right there food talks doesn't it and then tinker as you can see tinker went to the door
so tinker doesn't get her feed like she gets in the morning from tara
but tinker will always try to get in and get something out of tiana don't you yeah don't you
yes you just get yours in the morning don't you right
going back out yeah yeah see tinker i was just talking about tinker how she's like
she's like i want to come in hey tinker move your head i normally have my foot here and i
slowly push it closed uh i was gonna head out but then i noticed she's done eating
but she was right here yeah i saw that when i was coming in
open the door yes she's the one opening it i know they have we found it a few times where
it's been pushed in this direction oh completely in yes that's happened to me a few times and i've
and now they're all done if i have my brain done because somebody else is out here with me
no i'm uh i kind of know what you do and i don't see anything that you haven't done
so it's always the brain when somebody else is there you're like i'm out of my normal routine
so this morning when we were heading out barry received his romaine lettuce and his apple
and you can see he's finished half of his apple and maybe a third of his lettuce so
tiana doesn't give him anything further normally she just checks water and make sure everything's
good and this food will get him through the night right buddy okay so that's it we have the full
day's routine that took about half an hour so a little bit less than the morning feed
and we're heading back inside so that is it for this video hope you enjoyed this look into the
day here on the farm and we hope to see you next time next week on sunday uh for the next video
take care and have a wonderful week bye
