Filming Feel Good In The Day and then going back and filming a reality show about us.
Yeah, I would have loved it.
I don't think we would have made it to Christmas.
You would have enjoyed it.
I would have loved it.
It would have stopped me from descending into sort of anxiety because I'd be like,
I'm still on.
You know what I mean?
I think my body would have turned inside out with stress.
Yeah, you would have been just a ball of flames and bones.
Hello, I'm Charlotte Ritchie.
And I'm Mae Martin.
And you're watching Friends Like These on NME.
When did we first meet?
I'm going to say 2012.
Is that right?
I don't know.
I think so.
You don't know anything.
It's blurry for me.
I think we met in Edinburgh in 2012.
Yeah.
I think you came up to visit a flat.
And there was a lot of hype about your arrival.
Oh yeah, I have heard this story.
So the story is that I really distrusted you.
Yeah, you were ready to tear me down.
I was like, who is this?
Everyone was like, she's in Fresh Meat.
Oh yeah, I have been by then.
Yeah.
And then you came up.
Prent to be a huge disappointment.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
And you were.
I was.
I remember.
Is that the picture?
Is that where we have a picture of us with you
with the Adidas t-shirt on?
And I'm.
No, that was years later.
That's years later.
Yeah, yeah, years later.
Yeah.
OK, because I pinpointed that as the moment we met.
But that's not.
No, there is a photo from 2012 at a big group dinner.
Yes.
Oh yes.
I'm in the foreground like this.
Yeah.
And I'm in the background like this.
Nothing's changed.
What do we do when we're hanging out?
When we're hanging out?
Oh, we chat.
And we watch TV.
We actually did a lot of hanging out this year.
Yeah, so much.
Filming series.
Probably more than with anyone that I know.
Yeah.
Because partly of the pandemic.
And also because we were filming series two of Feel Good.
And we were quarantined together.
Famously.
And we did so many nice things.
Almost like a sort of holiday camp type thing.
Activities.
Yeah.
Whiskey tasting.
Music.
Spooks.
Spooks, yeah, yeah.
We did a lot of frightening.
Of jumping out at each other.
And then fainting.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Fake fainting.
We watched Below Deck.
We watched old horror movies.
Yes, yes.
We watched The Screams.
Mighty Ducks.
Yeah, we just had a lot of deep chats, I think.
I was very stressed.
And you sort of put up with it.
I was quite stressed, too, to be fair.
Yeah, you were quite stressed.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Go to the territory, maybe.
Yeah, some nice coffees.
How do I stop me feeling stressed?
You don't.
I don't.
It's not possible.
No one could.
No, that's true.
I was going to try and say that there was, I don't know,
distract you by being funny.
But that's not what I did.
I don't do that.
I think playing music helps me chill out.
Yeah, yeah.
You had your keyboard.
I had my guitar.
Yeah.
So we did some of that.
And also just generally, I think, the fact that we could share,
we are good friends and we can talk about lots of things.
More than ever, I think, we're open with each other.
And so that was probably a helpful thing,
that at least you could vent to me and I wasn't like,
what are you talking about?
Yeah.
Who are you?
Yeah.
I'm just trying to get on with...
I wonder if it would have made a good reality show,
like if there had been hidden cameras.
Yeah.
No, it would be pretty dull.
I think that would be the end of me.
I think the idea of being on a reality show is deep hell.
Would you have enjoyed that, do you think?
Filming Feel Good In The Day and then going back
and filming a reality show about us.
Yeah, I would have loved it.
I don't think we would have made it to Christmas.
You would have enjoyed it.
I would have loved it.
It would have stopped me from descending into sort of anxiety
because I'd be like, I'm still on.
I'm still on.
You know what I mean?
I think my body would have turned inside out.
Yeah, yeah.
You would have been just a ball of flesh and bones.
But still trying to smile.
And you're like that.
I love this.
May, tell me about the new series of Feel Good.
Well, Charlotte, it's just more laughs, more tears.
The final instalment of the greatest love story ever told.
May and George trying to make it work,
dealing with stuff in their own lives.
I hope people like it.
Do you think they will?
I hope so.
I really do.
Yeah.
Oh, great.
This is like my bread and butter, isn't it?
Yeah.
Let me just get in the bath.
Let me just get in the bath and light a candle.
Come on.
Okay.
Okay, Charlotte Ritchie.
Tell me your favourite thing about me.
These legs.
Wait, is it?
I was going to say something else and then you did that.
And then that was my new favourite thing.
Wait, but is it clear that we didn't write these questions?
Oh, yeah.
It would be really bleak if I was saying,
tell me your favourite thing about me.
So what is your favourite thing about me?
It's actually quite nice that you haven't had to.
Yeah.
I'm looking forward to your answer.
Yeah.
I'm assuming that's going to be reciprocated.
Nope.
What's your least favourite thing about Charlotte?
Oh, okay.
Well, my favourite thing about you is that your brain is like
an absolute buzzing galaxy of stuff.
Like you are constantly thinking about huge things,
small things.
You always have facts ready to fire at me.
But you are genuinely interested in so many things.
Thank you.
And that is so great to be around.
I love that.
There's loads of other things, but that is a huge thing.
And I think that's how you managed to write a show that has
so many kind of nuanced layers to it.
What else did you want me to know?
Could you say the thing right?
Yeah, and also because you smell great.
Yeah, thank you.
And what was the other thing?
No, but that's true.
Yeah, you have such a curious mind.
And that's really nice to be around.
That's very kind.
I think that's kind of what I'd say about you too.
I was going to use the word curious.
Thank you.
Yeah, I think we connect on a brain level.
Wouldn't you say?
I would say.
Oh, I would say.
Come on.
Good to meet you.
Pleasure.
We filmed this before we filmed the series.
Nice to get to know you.
You're very empathetic.
You don't have to.
You're very thoughtful.
Thank you.
Good clothes.
It's hard to listen to nice things about yourself.
Isn't it?
Yeah.
What's your karaoke song?
At the moment?
Well, it used to be Barbra Streisand, Oh My Man, I Love Him So.
And it would just clear the room and everyone would sit down.
And it's really sad and slow.
They'd leave?
Yeah, everyone would be dancing, having fun.
And then I'd start this ballad that no one knows.
So I've now transitioned to a story of my life, One Direction.
Great.
Or Pillow Talk, Zayn Malik.
Or, like, I'll do an Ed Sheeran.
I just do sort of crowd things.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, great.
What about you?
Oh, so you've changed your personal, like, what you want to perform.
And you've adapted it to the audience at the karaoke booth.
Yeah.
Seems a bit sad, actually.
You should get back to your roots.
Do you think I should go back to Streisand?
I'll stay.
I'll stay in the booth and listen to that.
Oh, man.
It's a really heavy song.
Yeah.
Well, maybe I'll see how I go.
It would be nice to get back to karaoke, actually.
What, seriously?
I've never done karaoke with you.
No, I don't think.
I would die.
I think we'd have to just get a booth.
I have actually once done it when I was with three people.
And we took it in turns and sang really sincerely.
Yeah, in your best voice.
Yeah.
That's how you have to do it.
It was actually really sweet.
And I was surprised by the choices that everyone made.
Yeah.
There was an intimacy to that.
There was the next day no one could really look at each other.
I think my go-to is Torn by Natalie Imbruglia.
Really?
Yeah, it's surprisingly satisfying in karaoke.
That's a great choice.
And everyone does end up joining.
It's quite a joining-in-ing song.
See, I wouldn't like that.
People don't realize that they know it.
And, of course, they do.
If people were joining in, I'd be like, can you just wait until my…
Oh, right.
Yeah.
No, it's nice.
I think at a certain point, it's like, I suppose, a concert if you were at a concert.
She didn't write that.
I mean, she didn't write that song, but that song was originally like a…
It was a big court case, wasn't it?
Yeah, was it?
It's almost exactly the same in its original form and then it was just…
Yeah, it's like a Swedish song or something, isn't it?
Yeah, I just gulped with nerves in case somehow I'm implicated.
Yeah, you're now implicated.
What was the last text that we sent each other?
Well, I…
I know it.
Yeah.
Why are you being…
Because it doesn't paint me in the greatest light.
I was a bit late to here.
Yeah.
And I said, could you get me a coffee?
Yeah.
And you did.
And actually, you were already calling me to say…
Can I get you a coffee?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I feel like when we were filming, there was a lot of mutual coffee getting.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Lots of exchanging of that.
Mae, what was our wildest night out together?
I'm actually genuinely intrigued to know your memory of this.
Really?
Yeah.
The other night was good.
When was that?
We did music.
Oh, yeah.
We got really drunk.
We danced.
That was so fun.
That was really fun.
I feel like there was a night in L.A. where it was fun to be in L.A.
Yeah, did we go to a gig?
We went to a gig.
I threw up the next day and missed a meeting.
Did you?
I don't remember that.
Yeah, but that was fun.
That must have been wild.
It was wild.
You were being sick.
It was wild.
It must have been wild, yeah.
Yeah, I think that we have some more on the horizon.
I think what's a shame is that we haven't been able to really celebrate this show.
Because it came out and then lockdown happened.
Yeah, we've got to go on the lash.
Yeah, we've got to go absolutely razzmatazz.
We've got to go razzmatazz, baby.
What was the last TV show that you binged?
The last one I binged, I'm genuinely trying to remember now.
Oh, I just watched all of I Hate Susie.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
And?
It was great.
Yeah.
It was really great.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
That was literally the last thing I watched loads of episodes of.
It was great.
I know you haven't asked me, but I just watched Love Fraud.
Oh, yeah?
A documentary series.
Three episodes.
This guy just ripping off women.
It's like Dirty John.
Yeah, he's a fraudster.
Yes, I think you mentioned that, actually.
Oh, it was juice.
Really?
It was absolute juice.
There's the juice again.
Sorry.
I really regret that, yeah.
