Dies irae (Latin for “Day of Wrath,” often also written in the Medieval Latin form Dies ire) is the beginning of a Medieval hymn about the Last Judgment. From the 14th century until 1970, it was sung in the Roman Rite as a sequence of the Mass for the Dead, and today it is only part of the Requiem in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite; it can also be used “ad libitum” in the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Rite on All Souls' Day and in the last week of the liturgical year. The text was confirmed as an integral part of the Requiem by the Council of Trent (1545–1563).

Lyrics: Dies irae - Dies illa

Solvet saeclum in favilla
Teste David cum Sybilla
Dies irae - Dies illa
Solvet saeclum in favilla
Dies irae - Dies illa
Solvet saeclum in favilla
Teste David cum Sybilla

Dies irae - Dies irae - Dies illa

Solvet saeclum in favilla
Solvet saeclum in favilla
Teste David cum Sybilla - Sybilla
Dies irae - Dies irae - Dies irae

Quantus tremor est futurus
Quando judex est venturus
Cuncta stricte discussurus

English;

The day of wrath, that day

Will break up the world into ash
As testified by David and the Sybil
The day of wrath, the day of wrath, that day
Will break up the world into ash
The day of wrath, that day
Will break up the world into ash
As testified by David and the Sybil.

The day of wrath, the day of wrath, that day

Will break up the world into ash
Will break up the world into ash
As testified by David and the Sybil
The day of wrath, the day of wrath, the day of wrath

How much trembling there will be
When the judge comes
And strictly examines all things

When we sang Mozart's Requiem at school, the Dies Irae was my favourite part.

I think I need to explain, it was not the part: 'Will break up the world into ash', but 'When the judge comes and strictly examines all things'.

As I struggled to accept that the moral level I wished for in today's society was not to be found, I immersed myself in ancient myths and legends, where heroes thrived and virtue and morals were honoured.

So, in my youthful hopes, I saw a bright future after that day, 'Dies Irae'. I believed that the world would be cleansed and reach new moral heights. I believed that absolute evil would no longer be allowed to exist and that good and virtue would be honoured and celebrated.

In my imagination, it was a world of hope, loyalty, courage, virtue, and a bright future.

We hope you liked our video, which was filmed by Christian or Simone Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma. Have a wonderful day!
