Through this exclusive interview, Studio MK27 shares the creative process behind the Biribinhas Private Beach House — a project that reflects the essence of contemporary Brazilian architecture. In this conversation, the architects reveal how light, proportion, and materiality become tools to dissolve boundaries between the built and the natural.
More than a house, Biribinhas represents a philosophy of design that embraces simplicity, silence, and sensory experience. The discussion explores how architecture can create emotion, slow time, and establish an intimate dialogue with the landscape. Each decision — from structure to detail — is guided by precision, serenity, and the search for balance between art and life.

She casts a shadow for herself
It was an existing house with a stain and we needed to renovate
it a re-adaptation to turn it into a completely different house
What I like about her is that this staircase is in the middle of a glass pavilio
It's almost like you're going to a treehouse
A 1 200 square meter lot which is a large plot that offers plenty
of potential and with an area that would be small to occupy
She was a very compact house with little space for empty volumes
because she had a program that fit tightly into this spot
So we take advantage of the west protect from the sun
look at the vegetation and also look at the sea do that
She is taller she has two floors she is not a house in the ground
And the little girl fits into this second context
Then that upper part that basically becomes loose because it's glass
You don't realize that she has a foundation she's the treehouse
So the idea was to cover that volume with a light element
Let the light enter let the house have a softer
illumination on this terrace without creating a harsh shadow
Then we didn't do a real coverage we had already thought about it from the beginning
To make these little things with a light-filtering
element a sun protection one that would let rain come in
You see a plan the top part seems to be supported almost floating
and slightly floating over the lower part
This space between one slab and another this leftover void is an architectural solution
gives a sense of lightness because you see a very slender slab and the upper volume
It seems to float above this slab and you don't see the structural
height that is you don't see the beam that is set back behind
Then it means turning the structure upside down as if I took the table
It turns the other way then the structure is flipped upward the beams etc
All installations waterproofing for the installations second slab
The pillars are metallic and the structure of the biriba up there is also metallic
She is a modernist house and suddenly she has a hat a plan of
little birds covering the entire house almost protecting her
Do what is strong and clear that exists in this
region This house is well integrated with the landscape
For me she remains within what she is outside
It seems the garden has entered the house and we brought a bit of the garden's greenery inside
Losing the limitations of architecture interiors and landscaping and
everything becomes one thing just the form in which we generate a work
The house railing at the beginning when we did the preliminary design
He was a closed white plate so the element is truly born closed there
And when we presented the project one of the very few comments the clients made
That's how it was maybe like that I'm lying in my bed will I be able to see the sea
They thought of these vertical bars flat vertical bars with space between them
But at the same time there is something about the house having a certain level of protection because it's a very public place
Then it was developing that prototype I think we did it during the work
We were almost always making the prototype for that railing
And the good thing about this element is that from the front you can see it perfectly
As you move diagonally it closes in because of the perspective
We are creating space by space the sensations we want
That magic of light passing through the blinds every time you walk down that hallway
It's different from the shadow it's all the night speech to go elsewhere
I think the issue of emotion is very important and
light is fundamental for us it's just another wall
Marcio always jokes that he brought this from the movies we didn't make
movies but we know how to do this very well too
I think this idea of coming from a smaller place and moving to a brighter one
Let it have more light I think these are things we use
which also comes from Brazilian modernism
Neymar has a lot of that where you go into the
cathedral through that low tunnel and then you arrive and do that "woah "
There is a moment of closure and then a moment of elevation
I think that's something we like to play with
I think white is a neutral element and we had
already used that white in other beach houses
From the earliest projects we liked to play with materials
When we entered the project there was already a pre-materiality in which we
also participated there are already some principles defined by the architecture
I already had that concrete that was supposed to be white I already had that whiter materiality
And we wanted to emphasize continue
it inward into the carpentry for all
the internal parts We wanted to intensify the use of these key materials
Then this white will permeate through different textures
It's the latticework the delicate mesh the slats it's this way we play with textures
A fundamental feature of the house was the pebble
floor we wanted to bring this to the pool as well
Then the pool is also made of pebbles green
pebbles just like we like to play with textures
People also enjoy playing with sensations
So here you have almost a massage on your foot
Here it's different it's more direct but you can feel the difference between the stones
Combining with that is the wood in a few places
To bring a bit of that coziness into the house
I think the other fundamental thing is the thatched roof
who brings this game of light and shadow
where you see the day pass where you feel the clouds passing
It brings this life home even when no one is living there
One important aspect of this project is
that it is certified by GVC Casa and it
receives the gold certification Getting a gold certification is very difficult
Because the certification criteria are very
business-oriented and business is easier to handle
Then you have a house with eucalyptus shingles white concrete
installations with a lot of galvanization a lot of stainless steel
Everything is very concerned about the issue of the coastal
front
which is very aggressive So we have a technical layer on top
Where we have the condensers photovoltaic plate
We have the solutions these cross-ventilation solutions
For sun protection for shading
So it's a box an L that has inside a box of a sash
Covered by a layer of biribas
These are flat structures that float at various levels
