Enrique Granados studied piano with Ricardo Viñes and composition with Felipe Pedrell, the leading Spanish music theorist and composer of his time. Pedrell called for a renewal of Spanish music based on the spirit of folklore. Alongside Pedrell's two other important pupils, Isaac Albéniz and Manuel de Falla, Granados is one of the great innovators of Spanish music.

The ‘Stories of the Young’, part of ABRSM’s Easier Piano Pieces series, provide a contrasted collection of lyrical movements and lively, spirited pieces.

Many of his works were also transcribed for guitar and are part of the standard repertoire for guitarists. In 1901, Granados founded the Academia Granados (later Academia Marshall) in Barcelona, which he directed until his death.

Enrique Granados embarked on his final journey aboard the French Channel ferry Sussex in the English Channel, travelling from Folkestone to Dieppe. The ferry was torpedoed by a German submarine and severely damaged. Granados was initially rescued, but when he saw his wife helplessly floating in the sea, he threw himself back into the waves in a desperate attempt to save her, and both drowned.
