Francesco Canova (or Canona) (Monza, 18 August 1497 – Milan, 15 April 1543) was an Italian composer and lutenist, better known as Francesco da Milano.
Francesco da Milano, also known as “Il Divino”, was renowned as the greatest composer of lute music in Renaissance Italy. His works were widely published during his lifetime and remained popular across Europe until the 17th century.
Considered the greatest composer of lute music of the Italian Renaissance, he was also one of the leading figures in 16^(th)-century instrumental music. Due to his exceptional talent, he was nicknamed 'Il Divino' ('The Divine'), a nickname he shared with Michelangelo Buonarroti.
Some of his contemporaries left testimonies of his skill on both the lute and the viola.
