Can you ride an adventure bike around a Motocross? And could it really be competitive vs a fully race spec 450 four stroke? Let's find out! The all new Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid is said to be one of the most capable adventure bikes ever made, so we decided to put that statement to the test. I called up my pro dirt bike rider friend Rob Holyoake and asked him to send it around the awesome Cusses Gorse MX track to see what the T7 is truly made of! And then to makes things even more interesting, we added a YZ450F into the mix and got the stop watches out...Enjoy guys! :-)
Can you ride motocross on an adventure bike?
The new Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid is making waves in the off-road scene.
Yamaha say this thing is an absolute weapon of an adventure bike. I said that sounds cool but
I've got two questions for you. How does it handle jumps and can I borrow a YZ450?
So in this video not only are we going to send it around the track on this 72 horsepower
11,800 pound adventure bike but we're also going to put it head-to-head against a race spec 450
in the ultimate contest of off-road prowess. So make sure you watch
until the end to see the results of our lap time showdown.
You'd have to have balls the size of Jupiter to be willing to jump on board a T7 for the
very first time and immediately start hucking doubles and blasting whoops.
Lucky for us our friend Rob Holyoak has galactic size gonads and just doesn't know how to turn down
a challenge. Okay so you have met Rob on our channel before. He's tested some 125s for us
earlier this year. We've been out on track. Rob what was it like out there? Obviously
making a couple of adjustments at the moment. Just adjusting the rear brake up a little bit.
Yeah it's pretty big compared to a 125. Pretty heavy but we'll get it over some jumps I think.
We'll get it over. And if you don't know Rob, Rob is a two-stroke expert we say don't we Rob?
Race was it seven? Seven years of the EMX 300 series riding a big two strokes at the highest
level in Europe so he knows what he's doing. He knows what he's talking about and he's
definitely the man for the job today so let's go send it.
It also is worth mentioning that this is completely stock. We haven't made any
adjustments to it. We've just changed the tyres to suit the track better but
suspension's stock. Everything's stock. I don't know if the other adventure bike videos you've
seen on a motocross track before have been completely stock bikes but this one is so
let's hit the track. Let's send it. Let's go. That was cool but let's crank things up a notch
shall we? We've lined up a friendly challenger for Rob and the Tenere 700. It's time to put the
World Raid head-to-head against a fully-fledged 450cc race machine.
The YZ450 is without doubt one of the most potent race machines on the planet. I mean Eli Tomac
just won the AMA Supercross Championship on one of these things and the Cab Screens Yamaha squad
claimed the EMX Nationals 450 title last year here in the UK with Harry Kulas behind the bars.
And today we've got Harry's teammate Dan Thornhill on hand to keep Rob company
and lay down the gauntlet for the World Raid. Okay so we know that in reality the T700 doesn't
really stand a chance against a 450 in a true head-to-head race but I reckon that in a lap
time challenge the World Raid will be able to hold its own better than you might think. Okay Dan so
you're gonna act as our stig for this next section yeah? You're gonna head out on track and lay down
a fast lap to to act as our benchmark then Rob you're going to go out and try and get as close
to that lap as possible on the T700 World Raid. Now as a little bit of added extra motivation for
you I've decided to give away some some hats some 999 Laser hats and I'll give away more hats for
the closer you get to Dan's lap time. Do I get one? And you will get one if you're within 10 seconds
of Dan's lap time I'll get you a hat. Righto. But the closer you get to the lap time the more
hats I'll give away to the viewers so uh let's do this. It's time for the showdown. Remember guys
the closer Rob can get to the time that Dan is about to set the more 999 Laser hats I will give
away. Here he comes then Rob. If he's less than 10 seconds behind Dan's time I'll give away 15 free
hats. If he's between 10 and 20 seconds behind I'll give away 10 caps and if he's between 20
and 30 seconds I'll give away five free hats. And unfortunately if he's more than 30 seconds slower
than Dan I won't give away any. Let's see what he can do. So it's game on for Dan Thornhill on board
the YZ450 four-stroke machine. Dan is a long-standing member of the Capscreen's Crescent
Yamaha squad. He's a solid top 10 contender in the British motocross championship in the MX1 class
and I've actually known Dan for donkey's years. He was even featured on this channel way way back in
the day when we first started out and when he was coming to the end of his amateur racing career and
just starting out his professional racing career. And as you can see he's got great style on the
bike, picture-perfect technique and he's making easy work of this awesome track here at Cuss's
Gores in the south of England. So we did have the telemetry on board Dan for this lap and we recorded
his top speed of 50 miles per hour on the YZ450. Now if you want to have a chance of winning one
of those free hats, that's if Rob can do the business of course, just comment down below with
your guess of the top speed that Rob was able to manage on the T7 on this lap. So we're well
over halfway through this lap now, just a handful of corners left to go for Dan Thornhill. Things
are looking good, he hasn't put a foot wrong so far this lap. Like I said his technique on point
and he's laying down the gauntlet, laying down the hammer for Rob who I'm sure is starting to get a
little nervous right now because this looks like a solid lap from Dan Thornhill on board the
Capscreens Crescent Yamaha. Just one turn left to go then, keeps a tight line and then he'll
blast through the whoops one final time to complete his lap. Let's see the damage and that's a lap.
What are we saying Ollie, what's the benchmark? 204.7. 204.7 is the time to beat. So Rob's just
heading down to start his hot lap. Dan are you feeling nervous? A little bit. Well let's see what
this T700 World Raid is truly capable of on a motocross track. So Rob's time to shine. Don't
you think he beats me? You might lose your job mate. So Rob's quest to get as close as feasibly
possible to Dan's lap time has begun and he is absolutely sending it on this Tenere 700 World
Raid. As you can see he's not sending all of the big jumps here at Coso Scores today. He said that
if this machine had a stiffer motocross suspension he'd send those jumps no problem. But just remember
what this machine is. This thing has a 23 litre dual fuel tank. That's a lot of petrol inside of
there. It's wet weight is 220 kilograms. It's got a five inch colour TFT, three ABS modes and a twin
cylinder 689cc four-stroke engine. And Rob is still sailing over these jumps here at Coso Scores.
But like I said that 48 millimetre KYB suspension up the front which has 230 millimetres of travel
maybe isn't quite what Rob is used to which is holding him back from launching these big jumps
like that uphill triple there. But fair play to Rob. He is still sending it around this track here
on the Tenere 700 World Raid. With the weight of this bike it's hard for Rob to get to those tight
inside lines. So we're seeing him use the wider lines here as he's coming around to complete the
lap. Just a handful of corners left to go but Rob Holyoak is leaving nothing on the line. He's
sending it out there giving it 110 percent that's for sure. He dives it inside there makes the
corner and on the gas up the hill this is epic. We were getting excited trackside watching Rob
lay down this lap with just a handful of corners left to go. Two corners left to go for Rob Holyoak
then. Come on! One more set of whoops and here comes Rob through the whoops for the final time
to complete his lap. How close can he get to down Thornhill's time? Let's find out.
Fair play. Fair play. That's cool. That looked good. Did it feel good? Yeah it was good. Just be nice to do the
big jumps and then we'd be not far off. What we saying Ollie? What was the official time? 2.25.
2.25 so you was a 2.04. 20 seconds. 20 seconds off. I'm happy with that. I need to work out how many
hats I need to give away. It's one for me. If you think about it an amateur motocross rider
would probably be less than 20 seconds slower than a pro. Yeah I'd be 20 seconds a lap slower than Dan
around this track. We knew at the start of this video that the T7 wouldn't be able to touch a
Weiser 450 around a motocross track but what we wanted to do was show how capable an adventure
bike of this size is and it's actually pretty amazing isn't it what you've been able to do
today on this bike and this lap time showdown at the end just was a bit of fun to to show that
it's not a million miles off it's not like you're trying to ride an R7 around this track is it it's
it's a capable off-road machine and sure it's not going to beat a motocross bike in its natural
habitat but take this thing to the wide open spaces it was designed for and you've got an
apex predator on your hands haven't you so fair play. Thanks for watching guys I hope you enjoyed
this video and a big thanks must go to Yamaha UK for helping make this video happen we've been
wanting to send it on an adventure bike for some time now so I hope you guys enjoyed watching as
much as we enjoyed filming and remember we've got five free hats to give away thanks to Rob's efforts
so comment below your guess of the top speed that the Tenere 700 was able to reach around the track
today the first five people to get it right will win a 999 laser snapback I'll announce the answer
