Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) discovered Hungarian music through the Hungarian violinist Ede (Eduard) Reményi, who had been banned from Austria for participating in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and was therefore in Germany. Brahms was 15 years old when they first met and they met again several years later when Reményi returned to Germany. The two toured together. Another Hungarian violinist whom Brahms met was Joseph Joachim, who became a dear friend and mentor.

The Hungarian Dances were probably first composed in the 1850s and were published for piano duet in two volumes: 1–10 in 1869 and 11–21 in 1880. They were a great hit for Brahms. The 21 dances were popular, and piano duets were particularly fashionable at the time. Eventually, Brahms transcribed Nos. 1, 3 and 10 for orchestra in 1885. Dvořák orchestrated Nos. 17–21 and others orchestrated selected pieces.

The video, which was captured by Christian Schlegel in Switzerland in the Kiental Valley, was edited by Wenjing Ma.
