Many gardens during the winter look the same.
Empty, gray and completely barren.
Gardeners often think that this period is not being taken into account,
that the soil is in peace and that nothing special can be done here.
But the truth is the complete opposite.
An empty garden during the winter means lost edible things,
poor soil structure and a poor start to the spring season.
And all this can be prevented very easily.
Winter growing is not reserved only for experts.
As many as possible.
Certain cultures are extremely good at tolerating the cold
and grow even when temperatures are close to zero.
Winter salad, red, white onion, leek,
chives, spinach, carrots, parsley, radishes, radishes.
All these plants can thrive in the snow or near zero degrees.
As long as the soil is protected and not completely frozen.
Their presence in the garden during the winter is of double use.
Not only does it give fresh vegetables when you least expect it,
but it also keeps the soil active.
The land in which something grows, even slowly, never loses life.
The root of these plants breaks the surface layer,
keeps microorganisms active and prevents rain and snow from eating them.
Although plants grow slower than in the spring,
they actually do an important job.
They protect the soil structure, prevent erosion and maintain moisture.
If we leave the garden empty,
the wind and the abundant winter rainfall will take away the highest quality layer of the soil,
the layer that is most difficult to restore.
The second key element is food.
It is best to use natural food, such as some types of vegetables.
But it should be properly distributed and it would be good to protect it a little.
Adding vegetables during the winter is the best way for the soil to recover.
We add food, correct the soil structure
and ensure an active spring start to the plants.
On the other hand, a thick layer of mulch, leaves, straw, hay or chopped grass
is placed over the pond and thus creates a warm, moist and stable microclimate.
Under the mulch, a quiet but powerful transformation takes place.
The pond slowly ferments, develops, releases food
and turns the collected soil into a loose, humus structure.
When the time of planting comes in the spring,
the soil is like a spring, dark, loose and full of life.
This system, of course, works if you leave part of the garden under winter vegetables
and part under mulch and mulch.
Only one thing is important.
The soil should never be completely bare.
The bare soil is cold, lifeless, exposed to evaporation,
and microorganisms that are necessary to us during cultivation
Mulch maintains heat, prevents crust on the surface,
keeps moisture and creates perfect conditions
for the development of the organic matter that we added.
Therefore, winter is not the time when the garden should rest.
It is actually the best time to protect it, feed it and prepare for a strong spring start.
Whether you choose winter crops that will reward you with fresh vegetables
or renew the soil with mulch and mulch,
everything is better than leaving the garden empty.
Because the garden, which is active during the winter,
at least quietly and slowly,
becomes stronger, richer and more resilient as the first warm days come.
There is a lot of work that we can, but also need to do in the garden during the winter,
and if you don't want to miss any of these jobs or our useful tips,

because now is the best time to collect the ingredients that will enrich your compost,
and feed your plants in the spring.
