ABOUT ME I’m Andrew Jensen, a former full time touring professional that played on PGA TOUR Canada, Latinoamerica and almost every North American based mini tour from 2008-2020. I want to use my playing experience to inspire golfers to improve their own game and have more fun with this amazing game we play!
so if you don't hit the golf ball miles
you might as well not play this game
that's kind of the rhetoric that we're
getting when we consume golf these days
you watch golf on the PJ tour and it's
just a oozefest of how far these guys
hit the ball the big guys the small guys
look at the ball speed look at the
distance that they're hitting it you
consume golf on Instagram or YouTube and
it's just your favorite creators having
pissing contests about who can get the
most ball speed 180 190 200 even brands
are getting in on it and promote
this conversation we don't even care
where it goes it's just about getting
more ball speed and hitting it far to
the casual golf fan it can be a little
bit overwhelming and almost make you
feel like holy cow if I don't hit it far
I should go play soccer I mean for me
I'm 40 years old and I live around 170
ball speed I've never been considered a
short knocker but if I you know followed
the rhetoric that's out there I'd feel
like golly why do I even play this game
I don't hit it any anywhere thankfully
Technologies advance so much that we can
optimize speed and all of that and
forgiveness with modern drivers but
there's also speed training so for the
last 30 days I've been using the
ripstick never trained with it before
I've trained with other ones in the past
I want to see if in 30 days with
following their protocol can I gain
distance speed ball speed all of those
good things 30 days ripstick let's see
how it goes so the entire month of
January how much speed can I gain using
the ripstick first things first I needed
to check in see what where I'm at I did
a check in with my gamer driver qi1 us
mamia link white m40x five solid drives
so I cleaned up the data I wanted to get
five really good ones to see what we're
what we're working with and ultim me
it's four numbers we're paying attention
to Club head speed ball speed carry
distance and smash Factor so at my first
check-in I had
118.7 Mi of Club head speed 166.173
of 1.4 and even the spin the spin is
still good it's not like I'm spinning
these things these are just solid drives
definitely not the smash you you want
out a driver though then it was a matter
of getting into this whole thing and
what is it well this package right here
the the stick and the radar the radar is
just a nice tool to have because it's
giving you feedback as you practice as
you go through the training and yeah
some launch monitors out there rotto
mlm2 Pro Mio plus there's other little
radar things you can use so you don't
have to get this but this is kind of
their package deal I think if you buy
them together they're better price than
if you bought them individually but
$338 there's codes out there it's not
cheap but it's an investment into your
game so is it worth it quality of it
really really good I like the like
removability of all the weights here
they they slide in and out super easy
and obviously you take them in and out
depending on the training you're doing
did notice right away when I took the
wrapper off this thing the grip was so
greasy so greasy I was afraid that I was
going to like lose it but then after
essentially like two sessions it got so
nice and tacky that it actually feels
really really good so training with a
glove or without a glove it didn't
really matter and then you have a nice
counterweight here and that's something
that some training doesn't have so
that's just meant to kind of keep the
hands strong from being too flippy I
like that I really like the
counterweight when you dive into it you
have the app it's great like it was so
easy to step through there's there's
there's videos for everything if you
have any questions there's training
everything every movement you have to do
there's a video to watch you do a little
Baseline test when you start and my my
Baseline was super low it was like 80
something I was kind of confused but I
think maybe I just wasn't I was just
kind of swinging it I wasn't sure and I
think this little track is a little it's
good but it's it can be a bit misleading
like the gains you're making because
when I did my Baseline test yeah it said
my club head speed with two things was
like 87 or 90 M an hour it's not that's
why I opted for that to see what kind of
speed I would be gaining over the course
of this training and then day one of the
training I really liked that it like
counted me in there was beeps the timing
of rest was really good cuz I've done
speed training in the past where I've
downloaded PDF protocols from the the
Brand's website and some sometimes
you're just kind of left swinging you're
like okay I've got a train for 15
minutes just do this and you can kind of
go too hard and you you don't give
yourself the appropriate amount of rest
so you don't experience you know the
gains and the strides that you should be
making the app counting you in when to
swing when to switch really really nice
touch and this was my first time using
an app based swing speed protocol really
really really like that and moving from
that it locks you so you can't like go
ahead head in the app so in my first day
of this I was very very impressed with
everything that the the product and the
app had to offer in setting me on this
this journey so then it was just like
just do it every every couple days
checked in at two weeks I wanted to see
if halfway through this would I am I
starting to see some progress so two we
check-in same thing driver gamer five
solid shot and I'm not trying to skew
this anyway I just wanted five solid
ones where you're seeing just good
strikes not overly spinny the launches
are good like the shot was good I was
happy with it we don't see a huge
jumping club head speed we see almost no
jumping club head speed but we see a
jumping ball speed and that's because
the smash is better which is really
really interesting so I'm hitting it
faster hitting a little bit further
carrying it a little bit more because
I'm hitting it more off the center of
the club face but it's not like the
launch changed the spin really changed
nothing really changed except for
hitting it more off the center of the
club face and I think a lot of speed
training is just you're thinking oh it's
just about going fast fast fast fast
fast but clearly two weeks into sticking
to this protocol I was seeing something
clicking where whatever the waiting
whatever it was doing it was allowing me
to deliver that club Square more Square
more off the center and you're seeing it
like Club speed sure in two weeks I
don't think you should expect a lot of
gains but to see ball speed and smash
and carry go up that was really
interesting and very encouraging and I
also wanted to like okay let's Max one
out on week two I didn't do a max out on
on day one I never really thought of it
but I was like ah how how how hard can
you go so I did a max out here
123.3mi of ball speed good launch good
spin like this was awesome it was really
fun to just be like can you just smash
one that didn't spin off the planet and
it was like yeah that was that was
really good I was fired up I'm starting
to experience some gains two weeks into
this training but it's not all apple
pies and rainbows it's tedious two weeks
in it was the same movement it was the
same freezer left and right and then you
know leg up front heel up left and right
then test it's boring I mean each one
took like it was like 15 minutes but it
it's boring there's nothing about like
there's no way around that speed
training is boring and using the app
it's really great because it counts you
in and all that but you can't run music
sometimes it's nice to have some tunes
playing while you're doing something a
little boring you can't play music in
the background while it runs definitely
a bummer because I like to listen to
music when I train when I practice when
I work out when I run the fact that I
couldn't listen to music because the app
was going not fun I mean yes I could do
this all without the app but the app I
think really elevates the
experience of what you're doing but not
having music being able to play in the
background just sucked it just sucked
because it's boring it's boring and you
want something to break that kind of
monotony of it it was around session 10
all right it's session 10 day 20 finally
hit
130 no weights left heel
lift we got the 130 crossed off the list
it was like okay I'm into week three
definitely starting to notice plateauing
but I was also starting to notice my
form getting sloppy and that's one thing
that speed training you have to be
careful with cuz you can get sloppy
because you can just start thinking like
oh yeah just fire it fast use the lower
body use the core but the thing that I
was noticing is there's so much emphasis
on kind of the the delivery the the
release the fire I was losing my my form
on the load I had to really kind of
check in and remind myself like when you
get to the top like really load into
that back right hip that Trail hip then
fire because it's easy especially when
you're you're lifting that left leg or
when you're freezing it's easy to just
kind of lose your posture almost like
have the hips curve a little bit under
because you're really just thinking
about speed from the hips that you
forget the load and it was right around
session 10 11 12 like the kind of last
week of this where I started to notice
myself Plateau but I had to catch myself
because my form was getting sloppy and
that's the last thing you want to have
yourself gaining speed but your swing is
actually getting worse and that's the
the line you have to tow when it comes
to speed training you don't want to lose
your Technique you want to gain speed
while maintaining good technique because
what good is gaining speed if your swing
goes to and now you can't even keep
it on the planet so that was one thing
that I had to be mindful of as I wrapped
up my final week there you go my final
week 12 sessions it locks I didn't like
that all the PDFs all the training you
can download for free on the website but
if you want to use the app to like track
you along and count you in you have to
pay past a
month you're already paying a lot for
the kit feel like that's a bit nickel
and Diamond that would be a drop off
point like oh I did it for a month I got
to keep paying to do it nah the easy way
or the fun way the gamified way on the
app oh I could download PDFs and have on
my phone and follow them on my own
timing and keep my own notes but if I
want to put my uh my baselines in and
check and have updates dayto day and my
tracking I have to pay for that Beyond a
month I think that's a
little I I it should be free it should
be free because it's keeping people
using the product versus buying the
product using it for a month and then
just giving up on it I think that's kind
of the rub of a lot of training AIDS
they get people in the door but it's
about longterm it's not just about quick
hits so yeah all that all that being
said it was day 28 let's check in and
see what we've gained with a solid month
using the ripstick clubhead speed up to
120 ball speed peeking over 170 carry
over to almost 304 and the smash stayed
up 1.42 I did a max out and this max out
was pretty sweet 125 Club head speed 176
ball speed but then when we compare them
all together you just see some really
nice slow progression and ripstick makes
pretty big claims of what three months
will do and I would like to Embark upon
that I know it's tedious I know it's
boring but I know that it changes right
when I have to start pain it changes
again I could download it for free and
follow it but I like the app I like I
like the gamified I like the tracking I
like the it's more
involved then I got to pay for it don't
like that but one month using the
ripstick was really really impressive
generally speaking it was quite fun it
wasn't hard to find the time time
whether it was after the gym in the
morning or sometimes I had to do it
after the family all kind of went down
it was it was not difficult finding that
15 minutes every two or three days to
get this done and yeah what are your
speed goals because I think for me I'd
like to get to 180 ball speed and if I
could kind of live there it'd be nice
it'd be nice to live there because like
I said in the beginning I don't
subscribe to that but it'd be nice to be
hitting it off the center
further straighter because then it's
just like the game is a little bit
easier it's more wedges it's better
chances for scoring so yeah let me know
what are your speed goals for 2025 and
we'll see you in the next one
