I gave an average golfer the $329 Takomo IGNIS D2 driver to see if this affordable golf driver could actually improve his game against his current driver. We put the Takomo driver through a real-world fitting, comparing ball speed, distance, forgiveness, and dispersion to find out whether it deserves a spot in his golf bag.

This is my nephew, Ethan.
He's a decent little player, but he absolutely hates his driver.
Tacoma sent me their new Ignis D2 to test,
but I asked for a left-handed one specifically for Ethan.
So instead of me telling you whether this $329 DTC driver is solid
and forgiving and all the things Tacoma says it is,
we're going to find out if it can actually help the golfer it
was designed for as I try to fit Ethan into this driver.
So what driver do you have?
The Maverick.
Do you know what it's set to?
I, no, not at all.
So you don't know what it's set to what don't you like about it?
I'm scared to hit it. It feels dead. What's the miss?
Either right or yeah
Do you reach for driver first or do you always think I need
to hit less than driver on almost every hole?
I look at the hole and I open maybe
but like depends on how I hit on the range
On a scale of 1 to 10. How much do you like
that driver that you have in your golf bag?
so to start things off I'm gonna have Ethan hit
his Maverick driver we're gonna see just what it
does the good the bad and the ugly
so eight drives let's see what you got man all right let's see it
and I don't want you to pay attention to the numbers
or anything like that because these
are range balls ball speed is going to be a wee bit lower
the spin maybe is a little bit higher
I know that and it's a fair comparison
when we compare this to the Tacoma how was that was that
decent one oh healing
okay it's okay well you
don't really know your
numbers so it's all this
is all new to you ethan's been playing for three years roughly three
and a half maybe since you're
like what 13 14 and we would play like Father's Day, Thanksgiving, Ethan
was a great baseball player
but just naturally took to golf
and has gotten quite good pretty quickly shooting I mean you
can break 80 you're shooting in the 70s not every time
but yeah but you're definitely breaking 80
only playing golf for three years how far
do you think you hit driver like in the air not after it
runs or anything on the course okay that's pretty accurate
so basically our average carry was 250.
clubhead speed it didn't read all of them
but kind of run right around 113 114. ball speed we saw
some sneak to 160 but kind of an average of 157. the spin's high
but that's whatever it's a range
ball but then if we look at this this is what hopefully
the Tacoma driver can rectify is tighten
this dispersion so i'm going to give it to you now
at stock is that like well you want it you want
yeah the smaller the better
so if i can give it to you here at stock we're going to see what
Ignis D2 does for Ethan before Ethan hits it i had to hit this thing
so that i could get familiar
with what this driver can
or can't do it looks really good the data is fine it's definitely got
some draw bias to it it feels like it's designed
for people that lose the golf ball right it just
has my hand set so low
but the data's okay on good shots the ball speed certainly isn't there
but we know that we know this isn't built
to be a super fast ball speed driver this is meant to be
a fairway finding forgiving well-launching driver
and I dialed it in with that that strange fitting
sleeve where I had to look online
with what what meant I would love a flat setting but there is no
flat settings which is a bit of a hang-up
so it's all loft adjustments with going upright or
simply loft adjustments
when I got this thing down to just I believe one degree eight degrees
pretty solid i was finally seeing high 160 ball speed with it
so i was familiar with what this
driver can do before giving it to Ethan
so Ethan has actually never seen this driver i tried it
so this is like true first impression you have 101s in the bag
so this is the Takomo Ignis D2
oh that's sick i like it i like
the all black yeah a little bit of a maverick
look like looking down oh i'm
so used to like the maverick how it like glosses okay so the
matte finish not different different look different it's
a Ventus Blue 6S just the
Takomo offering no Velocore i like
the um yeah there's a compass on here
so that's the adjustment sleeve that has been kind
of criticized never gonna it's very confusing
you have to like pull up online what it
means i shoot northwest yeah exactly so
we're gonna hit this same stiff 6S um we're gonna
hit it oh hyped it yeah that was dead straight
sounds like a cat x it's a cat x baseball baseball
that sounds okay oh nice 260 off
yeah don't look at the numbers don't look
at the numbers don't look at the numbers
nice yeah that and that wasn't
hit very well no a little scruffy
no but that thing
piped. Yeah, that was dead straight now. That one was like up here.
It's unbelievable how straight this thing is for you
It's not slicing. No, it's flying dead straight
and that's kind of what they built it for
I think a lot of people want Tacoma Woods to be like
their blade irons, but this is built for forgiveness
Where'd you hit that one?
Yeah, I got the terrible swing, but it went straight.
I don't know. I hit that very heely
I like where the ball is going like I want to put me on course.
Oh, I fell back
Yeah, got a little kind of comfortable.
Yeah, bad swings happen. So that was a little mishit.
That was a mishit, but when I mishit with that though,
it's like, I don't know if y'all know, like baseball,
like when you catch a wood bat in the hands, that thing hurts.
Same thing with kind of like the irons.
You can definitely feel it's a good hit and a mishit, but...
So you can, like the feedback's there for you on a club face?
Yeah, I definitely feel it.
It seems like you're hitting them all a bit heely.
Yeah.
I mean, those misses are fairways.
I mean, I just swung hard and went left.
That's going to have to do with the drivers.
Is that okay?
Yeah, that was pumped.
Okay, so we've hit eight.
Now let's just straight up compare them.
So first and foremost, we'll look at the dispersion of the two.
Obviously tighter north-south with the Callaway
because you hit the Tacoma a little bit further on some of them
that you really synced it up.
But in terms of left-right, it's a little bit tighter.
We just have two outliers of the eight.
but then if we look at straight up like
the data ball speed's the same spin is less so again range
balls less spins on the golf course better carries more with the Ignis
and but the offline like if
you look your average is closer to center with the Sakomo driver
so even though the ball speed is a
bit of a wash because this is definitely not one
of the fastest drivers in the market but it is
very forgiving and very consistent and we saw that at neutral
so now i'm gonna dial it and see if we
can improve these numbers but we've got this down one degree
because the launch was pretty
good the spin was pretty good the strike location
a wee bit on the heel side i don't think there's
much we can do with that like an optim
so we're just going to try this down eight degrees and see
if we have the same level of consistency
but maybe slightly less spin slightly less launch which
would bend but i'm also paying attention what
the ball speed is because that kind of tells me how
you're striking it because realistically neutral
was pretty damn solid oh no it's okay turn it on
that i like because the spin came down the launch came down
a hair the carry went up the height was
a little bit lower where'd you hit that like kind
of like high high heel or high center high center
okay good that's okay but like
the way i swing it i feel like i just gotta like turn it so much
It maybe sits a little more open to your eye at address.
That's like, yeah, because I think I'm turning it.
No, don't.
Don't think you need to change anything.
Where did you hit that?
Heel.
Heel.
So that was a heel that didn't fade, which is kind of good.
The ball speed came down because it was a mishit,
but the spin came down, which is good.
Launch was low.
Just based on your memory to the previous setting, what felt better?
The first time I gave you that or this time?
First time.
Okay.
I like it.
Interesting.
You're drawing it in this setting.
i don't know a lot more you're turning it over a lot more
which is interesting but that could
be because you think you have to because the face
that one felt like a normal phone but nothing's
changed but the ball's drawing right just
the way we change the driver like i don't like that that's
that's not in the fairway that's not sure it went further
but it was low and i think it's gonna run
sure but it's gonna run straight into the tree
a little more off that but so now like if we just
straight up compare yellow is our most recent one
and well it's lower but look how big that
circle is our ball speed didn't go up yes it's five drives
to eight drives our spin came down
marginally it's not better
and trying to launch a little bit better trying to spin it a little
bit better the trade-off was not there
so we're gonna go back to neutral get a couple for your
own feel and uh i'll ask you a question after
that or north it's not neutral it's more there
you go see it looks a lot better
in my eyes feels more comfortable like it just sits better just
like it sits like a golf club i feel like the other setting even
though like the face being
a hair open yeah it just felt like okay cool cool
cold swing yeah okay that was me not the club at
all like at the fairway yeah this is where my feet
was basically lined up but that was the shot you
hit six of the eight times yeah
and i feel like if you if you chose to use it of course i'm happy
yeah but you would get more comfortable with the driver
that you maybe you're gonna kind of step
into it a little bit more try to hit
this one hard i just want to see like not like foolishly
hard but just try to hit it hard in balance
and rhythm but hit it hard that's gonna be your miss
when you get excited but ball speed
was pretty good i mean it's obviously in the trees right
like we're not saying that was good
but what i wanted to see was when you when you got excited
does it do what can happen versus oh my gosh yeah
that was a pull yeah like a maverick that ball
would be low and that was low
and left into those trees yes yeah okay one more so squared up just
you're just the base is open
but the ball speed is up like the launch is good i'm i'm happy with it
in this setting it's not perfect
but i think that is maybe a little bit of a limitation with some
dtc stuff you might not get perfect
with what you're what's available to you but if you get
90% is the 90% better than what you already had it's like
this one plays like a fairway finder
aiming at that shed sure what i'm doing
but the whole objective is would you want to put that in
your bag over that not just because it's a fairway finder
but because you feel confident that you can
yeah hit it solid not hook it hit fairway like it
because like i'm not a pro golfer i don't have a
lot of miss hits yeah that hurts
when i miss it yeah one your misses with that are from there
to there where's the misses with the and now like i feel something
with this like that that one just
feels like a the way i put on a baseball player
this is like a good like that's like wreck ball
bat it's like a better like cool okay one more
better like material last one here last one best
one hell yeah dude that's one of it that was 270
in the air that's fairway finder swing but that
was 270 in the air 2500 spin
with a range ball 158 ball speed i felt smooth that was the best
one of the day dead straight
so i think this is like six years old the ball speed is the same
the spin is a wee bit better the launch is about
the same same in the air ever so slightly you're
gonna play tomorrow there's no school tomorrow
which driver okay there you go like what main
reasons okay deal like deal consistency
and and as a just like a look like really like a look
a look matters but as a 17 year old does the does
the name brand Tacoma have anything to do with it
okay cool that's good to know
but Ignis D2 has replaced your Maverick because that's yours
that's yours to keep thanks thanks to Tacoma uh we're hooking you up
and yeah have you hit this
yet let me know in those comments
and uh let's spam them with Ethan finding more fairways thanks
brother go see you next video peace i should
be in next video see how i start playing
