Fake Goods Are a 'State Backed' Industry in China
The fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court has killed at least 156 people.
Officials first claimed the renovation site’s protective netting was “flame-retardant,” but later admitted all samples failed safety standards. The nets came from local contractors, but many suspect they were made in mainland China—and the government isn’t answering questions.
We do know the renovation company has used nets from two manufacturers in Shandong Province on other Hong Kong projects.
NTD’s Chinese-language edition spoke with Hu Liren, a businessman who personally suffered losses from fake building materials in that same province. He says counterfeiting isn’t limited to a few companies, but a nationwide, government-backed practice.
