Scarlett Johansson is set to star in Mike Flanagan's fresh and bold take on The Exorcist.
This new project is backed by Blumhouse and Universal, following their previous attempt to
revive the horror franchise with 2023's The Exorcist, Believer. Flanagan, known for his
work on Stephen King adaptations like Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, as well as TV shows
such as Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, has written the script and will direct
and produce the new feature. This film is neither a remake nor a sequel, but is set within the
Exorcist universe, though details remain tightly under wraps. The original Exorcist, based on
William Peter Blatty's novel and directed by William Friedkin, focused on the demonic
possession of a young girl and the priests who attempt to save her. It was nominated for 10
Academy Awards. Subsequent films explored stories centered on the girl as an adult,
the priests' backstories, or other demonic cases investigated by detectives from the first movie.
Flanagan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that The Exorcist was one of the reasons
he became a filmmaker, and he is honored to explore something fresh, bold, and terrifying
within its universe. David Robinson, chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek Entertainment,
remarked that Flanagan's vision for this franchise will amaze audiences worldwide.
Scarlett Johansson's most recent role was in Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth, which grossed
over $868 million globally, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the studio's dinosaur movie
series.
