When in doubt, burn it out? (Ep 2 of 3!)
Who is the best push car driver in all of Jamaica?
Me!
So you're going to do it?
No!
Who is the best racer in all of Moto America?
Me!
So you're going to win?
No!
Dude, I don't know what it is, but all of a sudden these earplugs are like, I can't hear anything.
What?
You would have to talk that loud for me to hear what you're saying.
Hello?
Here we go.
Hono Superbike race one from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Sanca.
Going cleanly through turn number two, and off to turn three they go.
Yep, just looking a little bit further back.
Both the M4X starts, Suzuki's got good starts.
They run third, fourth.
Looks like Kyle Wyman, good start from row two on the inside.
Slots himself into fifth place early with Zanetti and Josh Heron just behind him.
Yeah, these guys are just working on each other.
We've still got nine laps to go, and it's just really going to be about how much Josh can keep the tire underneath him
to try to keep Cameron Peterson at bay.
I've seen that bike bucking around on him a lot so far.
Early, you can see the drives that Cam Peterson's able to kind of get off these corners right now over the BMW.
Josh Heron in the conversation with these seats that are open for 2021.
And Heron, seventh place.
Okay, so we just finished race one here at Laguna Sanca.
Finished seventh, so not happy with the result, but had a fun race with Cam Peterson.
Learned a lot about the bike that I haven't been able to really feel this weekend.
I think one of our big problems is that I'm getting this kind of edge grip slide.
So when I initially pick up throttle, I'm getting a slide.
And then Steve was just talking about on the data, you can see I initially get on the throttle, release throttle, get back on it.
So what's happening is I'm getting this slide that's unexpected on the very far lean.
I roll off a little bit to settle it back.
And when I get back on the throttle now, TC is really holding me back and I couldn't really feel that before.
So at the beginning of the race, I just couldn't get comfortable.
And then about midway through, I started getting super comfortable that I could start feeling all these issues that was going on.
I think all weekend I've been so worried about trying to fix the issue right away when I feel it.
That we haven't put enough laps on the tire to get it to get loose on us.
And then feel these issues that I'd run into or that maybe stand out more with a loose tire.
So it's good to get these first races out of the way because that's usually when I get my best data.
And Sunday has always been a better race for us.
So now we'll go back, look at the data, write down all my notes, give them to Steve.
And he'll work his magic tonight and try and get us a bike that's a little bit more dialed for tomorrow.
Had a good battle with Cam Peterson, he passed me midway through the race.
And then I was able to get him back and run a pretty solid, consistent end of the race.
It's not where we want to be, but we'll take it.
Solid finish, get some points, and yeah.
Now we've got the Harley race.
I'm excited to ride the Harley, but every session we've done, I haven't done more than a couple of laps because the thing stalls out on me.
Randy told me it's all about having fun, and I've been having fun.
But I know these guys don't want to come out here and not do good.
So hopefully the bike is working this time.
We've got a new gas tank that we've been waiting on.
I rode the bike at the test last Saturday, and I told them we needed a gas tank.
And they ordered one, but it didn't get here until today or last night.
So we've got a gas tank to try in the race.
And fingers crossed that it makes it the whole way.
Yeah, let's get it.
Hey Nick, make sure when I win today that you get on video because you missed it last time.
Love you.
Who's going to be aggressive and try to get to the front and take most of the risk?
Race number two, Hono Superbike.
So we're getting ready to roll when those lights go off.
It's game on for race number two.
And away we go.
You can see not massively aggressive lean angles as we normally see when the sun's shining.
It's not going to take long, though, Greg, because the track's mostly dry, especially down here.
So you kind of want to charge this beginning section.
Because you see the track is dry, it's going to put some heat in the tires now.
As they come up through turn five and, more importantly, turn six,
that's where you're going to have to be a little bit more careful.
It could be a little bit more damp up there.
But, oh, we have a bike off in the background.
That looks like a BMW.
And, of course, Josh Heron.
I had a great talk with Josh not long before we came on the air.
And he's just continuing to try to get this BMW and make it better.
Talking with him, he says, you know, yesterday we made comment that each race he goes to,
he's got to kind of rebuild the bike.
In other words, what he has found to work at one track really isn't applicable necessarily to the next.
But he's enjoyed his year so far, and he continues to just grind it.
But now he's just locked into a battle with Michael Gilbert for eighth.
They're about seven seconds behind Kyle Wyman.
And they're about five seconds up the road from Bobby Fong.
That BMW, shybie racing BMW of the number two, Josh Heron.
A 2016 model, Jason.
And yesterday they have the fastest track speeds.
So the motor's extremely fast.
But we know here at Laguna Seca that it's not always just about top end.
It's about getting the power to the ground and how well it turns.
A good look in the eyes of Josh Heron where he's looking right now.
So at this point on day three of the race, we've had some mechanical issues.
We've narrowed it down to what we believe is a wiring issue.
So at this point, bike's been stripped down a few times.
June, Bill, and Arnie have gotten to the point where we think it might have been a plug.
There's a couple different things we've looked at.
We've actually taken apart one of our show bikes that goes on the road and gets displayed.
Literally just we cut everything off that we needed so that we could try and figure this out.
Josh had some small mechanical problems.
For his own safety, he came in for the fact that he felt like someone may come behind him and attack him pretty much.
So with that said, we've done everything we can.
And we're hoping for a good race.
We'll see what happens.
No chance.
So what? Put a black tape on it.
You can take the tape off.
It's too late. I can't even put, I can't even, there's no guts in it, nothing.
You didn't run a nice super bike paint because it looked ugly?
Yes!
What the f**k, dude?
What the f**k?
No!
F**king Harley people.
Hey, the other problem is?
You guys are way too ******* Harley peopled out, man.
We don't want to run it because it's not pretty enough.
Are you serious?
It's not going to make it around two laps anyways. It might as well look good.
To have to switch all the fuel pumps and everything?
Yeah, there's a possibility like if we, I mean.
There's a possibility it might turn off on the track or something?
I just want you to know, like, we, we weren't, they weren't sure about the plugs at this point.
Like some of the connections and we were trying to figure out where to get new connections from.
Is that Chris's bike?
Are you worried about it doing that in the middle of the race and somebody hitting me?
Yes, I already talked about that.
But let's be honest, if it was, yeah, you're good.
If it was a bunch of guys that in the beginning it was supposed to just be build a bike, put a guy on it and let's race.
Until Moto America made the decision to, it's got to be, it's got to have someone that's got a pro license that's done this.
Because especially here, you know more than I do. You know what I mean?
But the problem is whenever it shuts off, it's not like a slow shut off, it's like a pull.
It just dies. That's what I'm worried about.
So what Bill did is also he turned off the key fob and he turned off the neutral switch.
So if that does happen and you pull the clutch in, you don't have to do anything but turn the bike right back on.
Oh, so I can, in gear and everything?
Yep. You don't have to do fine neutral.
You don't have to kill the power switch to let it reset either.
Just pull the clutch in, start the damn thing again and go.
So at least that'll be helpful.
I mean, someone's going to see and have to check up if that does happen.
But at least you have guys behind you that are like, okay, they know what they're doing.
They're not like, damn, Josh is having a problem.
They're going to either go to the outside of you or stay tight to the inside and just kind of bring it in if it's in a corner.
We should just tell everyone. Like, hey, give me some space.
Hey, give me some space.
We know we should tell them, say, if our bike does shut down.
Just let me go out a little bit.
If the bike shuts down, what we want you guys to do is…
Did you run out of weed today?
I think so.
I don't know if I was high or what, but I was pretty high yesterday.
Time. That time of the year we've been waiting for.
The drag specialty is king of the baggers.
This is our leader, Tyler O'Hara, off the track, and he's dropped back to what?
Third now. He picks it back.
Now we've got a race.
Aaron's having difficulties on the 50.
Hey, Sean, where is…
You get to do the post-race report, Randy.
Bill gets to do it.
What?
Post-race report.
I don't want that thing in my face right now.
I'm over it now. I was bummed when I first came.
Sean, too. Wait a minute.
I want to do good.
You're a racer, man. That's right.
Hey, tire to tire. Straight up.
That's right.
Front tire to front tire right now.
They made me do it.
Hey, so…
Hey, Sean, where's…
Oh, right here.
You ready?
For what?
A photo?
Hey, we'll do a photo real quick.
Where's race?
Race.
You got my hat?
Here, come here.
Hey, Josh.
So, on behalf of Performance Machine…
We wanted to give you something off the front of the bike.
Oh, sick.
So, there you are.
So, what does it say?
You will always be our number one.
Was that on there the whole time?
Yes.
That's pretty sick.
The race didn't turn out how we wanted, but we had fun.
That was the whole point in coming.
I was bummed, of course, whenever we first came in.
Just because I'm a racer, no matter what, I'm always going to be competitive.
But it was fun.
The whole Performance Machine crew…
I mean, they had a whole crew of guys up here.
Like, it was a factory road race team, and they killed it all weekend.
Randy did a great job putting this whole thing together.
We just had bad luck.
We rode at Fontana last weekend, and the bike was perfect.
And we came here, and we just couldn't figure out what was going on.
They tried everything.
Stayed here all night last night.
Did everything they could, and just couldn't fix it.
So, I couldn't figure out what it was.
So, bummed about that, but we had a great time.
And, yeah, hopefully we get to do it again sometime.
And made a lot of new friends.
And, yeah, had a great time.
So, thanks for watching.
See you tomorrow.
